Sensex Holds Above 77,350, Nifty Sustains 24,100 as Investors Track Earnings, IPOs and Global Developments
Indian benchmark indices traded in positive territory on Thursday, with information technology (IT) stocks leading the rally even as selling pressure in financial counters kept overall gains in check. Investors remained focused on the ongoing first-quarter (Q1FY27) earnings season, fresh developments in the primary market, and global economic cues.
The BSE Sensex traded above the 77,350 mark, while the NSE Nifty50 held firmly above 24,100, reflecting resilience in frontline stocks despite mixed sectoral performance. Buying in large-cap technology companies helped the benchmarks remain in the green, offsetting weakness in insurance and financial services stocks.
IT Stocks Continue to Outperform
Technology shares emerged as the biggest contributors to the day's gains after renewed buying interest from investors. Market participants accumulated IT stocks on expectations of stable global demand and improved earnings visibility following encouraging management commentary from sector leaders.
Among the top gainers on the Nifty50 were HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Wipro, and Maruti Suzuki India. The Nifty IT index advanced around 1.5 per cent, making it the best-performing sector during the session. Strength in export-oriented technology companies also benefited from a relatively firm US dollar and optimism surrounding global technology spending.
Financial Stocks Limit Upside
Despite the strength in IT counters, financial stocks remained under pressure and capped the market's gains. The Nifty Financial Services index was the weakest-performing sector during the morning trade.
Insurance major ICICI Lombard General Insurance witnessed a sharp sell-off after its quarterly earnings disappointed investors. The stock plunged nearly 15 per cent, touching a fresh 52-week low as weaker profitability and higher claim ratios weighed on investor sentiment.
Shares of HDFC Life Insurance also declined around 2 per cent, adding pressure on the financial space as investors remained cautious ahead of more earnings announcements from banking and insurance companies.
Broader Markets Trade Mixed
The broader market displayed a mixed trend. While frontline indices remained positive, mid-cap and small-cap stocks underperformed.
The Nifty Midcap 100 traded with a marginal negative bias, whereas the Nifty Smallcap 100 managed modest gains. Investors preferred quality large-cap names amid the ongoing earnings season, resulting in selective buying across sectors.
Market experts believe broader market participation could improve once corporate earnings provide greater clarity on business outlooks for the remainder of FY27.
IPO Market Remains Busy
The primary market continued to attract investor attention with multiple public issues underway.
Sotefin Bharat Limited opened its ₹89.76 crore initial public offering for subscription today. Meanwhile, the SBI Funds Management IPO and Alpine Texworld IPO entered their third day of subscription, while the Millworks Technologies IPO reached its final day for investors.
Market participants are closely tracking subscription trends as strong demand in recent IPOs indicates continued investor confidence in India's primary market despite broader volatility.
Laser Power & Infra Makes Stock Market Debut
Shares of Laser Power & Infra listed on the stock exchanges following a successful IPO that witnessed robust investor participation. The ₹742 crore public issue was subscribed more than 41 times, reflecting strong institutional and retail demand.
Analysts expect the listing performance to remain an important indicator of investor appetite for upcoming public offerings.
NSE Announces New Derivatives Product
In a significant market development, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) announced that it has received regulatory approval to introduce derivatives contracts on the Nifty India FPI 150 Index.
The new derivatives segment will become operational from August 12, 2026, providing foreign portfolio investors and institutional participants with another avenue to manage market exposure and hedge their portfolios.
Biocon Receives EMA Approval
Pharmaceutical major Biocon announced that it has received approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for the fill-finish manufacturing line of its insulin glargine product Semglee at its Malaysia facility.
The regulatory approval is expected to strengthen the company's global insulin business and support future exports to European markets.
Rupee Weakens Amid Global Uncertainty
In the currency market, the Indian rupee slipped by 6 paise to 96.31 against the US dollar during early trade.
The domestic currency remained under pressure due to a stronger US dollar and volatility in global crude oil prices, while persistent geopolitical tensions in West Asia continued to keep investors cautious.
Global Markets and Investor Focus
Global markets remained watchful ahead of key economic data releases and central bank commentary. Investors also monitored developments in the technology sector after Chinese regulators cleared Apple Intelligence for use on iPhones in China, a move expected to support Apple's AI expansion in one of its largest markets.
Back home, the market's direction is likely to be driven by quarterly earnings from major corporates, institutional fund flows, global commodity prices and developments in the IPO market.
Market Outlook
Indian equities continue to demonstrate resilience despite intermittent profit booking in financial stocks. Strong buying in IT shares has helped benchmark indices maintain positive momentum, while healthy participation in IPOs reflects sustained investor confidence.
Going forward, investors will closely monitor the remaining Q1FY27 earnings announcements, global macroeconomic developments, crude oil prices, currency movements and institutional investment trends. If earnings from key sectors meet market expectations, benchmark indices could extend their gains in the coming sessions, although sector-specific volatility is expected to remain elevated.
