US-Iran Geopolitical Risks Weigh on Investor Sentiment; Pharma Stocks Shine While Banks, Auto and Realty Drag Benchmarks
Indian equity markets witnessed a sharp bout of selling pressure on Tuesday as renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East rattled investor confidence and sparked risk-off sentiment across global financial markets. Concerns over the escalating standoff between the United States and Iran prompted investors to trim exposure to equities, pushing benchmark indices lower during the morning session.
At around 10:00 AM, the BSE Sensex declined 478 points (0.62%) to 77,138.18, while the Nifty 50 slipped 137 points (0.57%) to 24,074.10, falling below the psychologically important 24,100 level. The weakness was not limited to large-cap stocks, as broader markets also remained under pressure. The Nifty Midcap 100 fell 0.37%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined 0.57%, indicating a broad-based correction across market segments.
Geopolitical Concerns Drive Risk-Off Sentiment
The latest decline comes amid heightened uncertainty surrounding developments in West Asia. Investors globally have turned cautious as fears of a prolonged geopolitical conflict raise concerns over crude oil supplies, inflationary pressures and global economic growth. Rising geopolitical risks typically encourage investors to move away from equities and into safer assets such as gold and government bonds, leading to increased volatility in stock markets.
For India, which imports a significant portion of its crude oil requirements, any sustained rise in oil prices could increase inflationary pressure, widen the current account deficit and negatively impact corporate profitability. These concerns prompted traders to adopt a defensive stance in Tuesday's session.
Banking and Auto Stocks Lead the Decline
Sector-wise, the selling pressure was most visible in banking, financial services, automobile and real estate counters. Financial stocks, which carry a significant weight in benchmark indices, dragged the market lower as investors booked profits after the recent rally.
Auto stocks also remained under pressure amid concerns that higher fuel prices could weaken consumer demand if geopolitical tensions continue to push crude prices higher. Realty shares declined as investors reduced exposure to interest rate-sensitive sectors.
Market breadth remained weak, with the majority of benchmark constituents trading in negative territory during the first half of the trading session.
Pharma and Metal Stocks Offer Stability
Despite the overall weakness, defensive sectors managed to outperform. The Nifty Pharma and Nifty Metal indices traded in positive territory as investors shifted towards sectors considered relatively resilient during periods of market uncertainty.
Among individual stocks, Biocon emerged as one of the strongest performers, rallying nearly 6% on strong buying interest. Pharmaceutical companies generally attract investor attention during volatile market conditions because of their stable earnings profile and relatively lower sensitivity to economic cycles.
Metal stocks also remained firm as investors reacted to improving commodity price trends and expectations of continued infrastructure demand.
HCL Technologies Falls Despite Strong Quarterly Results
Shares of HCL Technologies declined around 3% despite the company reporting better-than-expected financial results for the April-June quarter. Although the IT major posted healthy earnings and recorded its highest-ever quarterly deal wins, investors chose to book profits following the recent rally in technology stocks.
The reaction highlights that market movements during earnings season are often influenced by valuation expectations rather than headline profit growth alone.
IPO Market Remains Active
While secondary markets remained volatile, activity in the primary market continued to attract investor attention.
The SBI Funds Management IPO, one of the largest public offerings in the asset management sector, opened for subscription after receiving strong anchor investor participation from leading global institutions, including BlackRock, Goldman Sachs Asset Management and Fidelity Management & Research.
In addition, Alpine Texworld and Millworks Technologies also opened their public issues, providing investors with multiple opportunities in the primary market despite broader market weakness.
Strong institutional participation in anchor books indicates continued long-term confidence in India's capital markets even during periods of short-term volatility.
Power Sector Attracts Positive Brokerage View
Brokerage firm Equirus Securities initiated coverage on JSW Energy with a "Long" rating and Torrent Power with an "Add" recommendation, citing India's favourable long-term electricity demand outlook and ongoing capacity expansion.
The brokerage also reiterated its positive stance on NTPC, highlighting the company's regulated earnings model, expanding renewable energy portfolio and strong project pipeline. Analysts believe the structural growth story of India's power sector remains intact despite near-term market volatility.
What Investors Should Watch
Market participants will closely monitor developments in the US-Iran conflict, as any further escalation could significantly impact crude oil prices and global financial markets. Investors will also keep an eye on foreign institutional investor (FII) activity, corporate earnings announcements and movement in global equity markets for further cues.
If geopolitical tensions ease, markets may witness a recovery supported by strong domestic economic fundamentals. However, prolonged uncertainty could keep volatility elevated in the near term.
