Zudio Owner Misses Street Expectations Despite Strong Store Expansion; Analysts Stay Positive on Long-Term Retail Growth Story
Shares of Trent Ltd, the Tata Group's flagship retail company and operator of popular brands Zudio and Westside, witnessed a sharp sell-off on Tuesday after its first-quarter business update failed to meet the market's lofty expectations. While the company continued to report healthy double-digit revenue growth and aggressive store expansion, investors were disappointed by slower-than-expected sales growth and declining store productivity, sending the stock down more than 11%.
During intraday trade on the BSE, Trent shares plunged as much as 11.28% to ₹2,966, marking one of the biggest declines among Nifty stocks. By mid-morning, the stock was trading around ₹2,979, down nearly 11%, even as the benchmark Sensex remained in positive territory. The correction wiped out a sizeable portion of the gains the stock had generated over the past month, bringing the company's market capitalisation down to approximately ₹1.59 lakh crore.
The market reaction underscores how premium valuations leave little room for disappointment, especially for companies that have consistently delivered high growth over the past few years.
Revenue Growth Misses Street Estimates
For the quarter ended June 2026 (Q1FY27), Trent reported standalone revenue of ₹5,666 crore, registering a 19% year-on-year increase from ₹4,781 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.
Although the company maintained strong double-digit growth, the performance fell short of analysts' expectations of 22–23% growth, leading to a sharp negative reaction from investors.
Revenue from the sale of products, excluding GST, also increased by approximately 19%, reflecting continued customer demand across the company's retail formats. However, the pace of growth was slower than anticipated, particularly considering the strong expansion in the store network.
Market participants had expected revenue acceleration following a relatively softer fourth quarter, making the 19% growth figure a disappointment despite its healthy absolute performance.
Aggressive Store Expansion Continues
Despite the softer-than-expected revenue growth, Trent maintained its rapid expansion strategy across all major retail formats.
During Q1FY27, the company opened 26 new stores, taking its total fashion retail network to 1,312 stores, representing a 26% increase compared to the same period last year.
The expansion reflects management's continued confidence in India's long-term organised retail opportunity and its strategy of capturing demand across value and premium fashion segments.
Zudio Remains the Growth Engine
Budget fashion chain Zudio continued to be the company's fastest-growing business.
The brand added 19 net new stores during the quarter, increasing its total network to 982 outlets, up 28% year-on-year.
Zudio has emerged as one of India's fastest-expanding value fashion retailers by targeting price-conscious consumers with trendy apparel, footwear and accessories. Its affordable pricing strategy has enabled it to gain significant market share, particularly in Tier-II and Tier-III cities.
However, analysts believe the rapid pace of expansion may temporarily affect store productivity as newer outlets typically require time to reach optimal sales levels.
Westside Expands at a Steady Pace
Trent's premium lifestyle brand Westside continued its measured expansion strategy by adding one net new store during the quarter.
The chain's total store count increased to 301 outlets, reflecting a 21% year-on-year growth.
Westside remains focused on strengthening its presence in premium apparel, beauty, home décor and lifestyle categories while maintaining healthy profitability.
Store Productivity Becomes a Key Concern
While the increase in store count remained impressive, one metric attracted considerable investor attention—revenue per store.
Despite expanding its network by 26%, Trent's revenue per store declined approximately 5% year-on-year, compared with a 4% decline reported in the previous quarter.
The weaker productivity suggests that newly opened stores are taking longer to ramp up or that some sales are being redistributed across nearby outlets as the company's network becomes denser.
For retailers undergoing rapid expansion, maintaining high store productivity is critical to preserving operating margins and delivering sustainable earnings growth.
Why Investors Reacted So Sharply
The sharp decline in Trent's share price was driven more by expectations than by weak fundamentals.
Before Tuesday's correction, the stock had rallied approximately 23% over the past month and nearly 50% from its March 2026 lows.
Investors had priced in expectations of a meaningful acceleration in revenue growth after management commentary suggested improving business conditions.
Instead, the reported 19% growth reinforced concerns that demand normalisation and store maturity may take longer than anticipated.
Given Trent's premium valuation, even a modest earnings miss resulted in significant profit booking.
Brokerages Continue to Back the Stock
Despite the weaker quarterly update, most brokerage firms have maintained their positive long-term outlook on Trent.
Motilal Oswal: Valuation Reset Rather Than Structural Weakness
Motilal Oswal Financial Services retained its 'Buy' recommendation while acknowledging that revenue growth fell below its expectations.
According to the brokerage, the recent rally had already factored in stronger sales growth, making the stock vulnerable to correction.
It believes the current decline reflects a reassessment of near-term expectations rather than any deterioration in Trent's competitive positioning or business model.
ICICI Securities: Growth Expected to Improve Gradually
ICICI Securities noted that Trent's revenue growth was broadly in line with its own estimate of around 20%, although below broader market expectations.
The brokerage expects like-for-like (LFL) sales growth to remain flat or in the low single digits during Q1FY27 before gradually improving as newer stores mature.
It projects revenue growth to remain in the high-teens to low-twenties over the near term and eventually recover to the mid-twenties as store productivity improves and revenue per square foot increases.
The brokerage also highlighted management's long-term target of maintaining approximately 25% annual revenue growth, supported by sustained store additions and improving operating leverage.
India's Organised Fashion Retail Opportunity Remains Large
Despite the near-term slowdown, Trent continues to benefit from several favourable structural trends shaping India's retail sector.
These include:
-
Rising disposable incomes.
-
Growing demand for branded apparel.
-
Rapid urbanisation.
-
Expansion into Tier-II and Tier-III cities.
-
Increasing preference for organised retail.
-
Strong demand for affordable fashion through brands such as Zudio.
Industry experts believe the organised fashion retail market still has significant headroom for growth, with penetration levels remaining relatively low compared to developed markets.
This provides companies like Trent with a long runway for expansion over the coming decade.
Key Factors Investors Should Monitor
Going forward, investors will closely track several operational metrics that could determine Trent's next phase of growth:
-
Improvement in like-for-like sales growth.
-
Recovery in revenue per store.
-
Performance of newly opened outlets.
-
Gross margin trends amid promotional activity.
-
Expansion pace of Zudio and Westside.
-
Consumer demand during the upcoming festive season.
-
Operating margin performance and cost efficiencies.
A sustained improvement in these metrics could help restore investor confidence after the current correction.
Market Outlook
Trent's Q1FY27 business update reflects a company that continues to grow at a healthy pace but faces increasingly demanding market expectations. While the retailer remains one of India's fastest-growing organised fashion companies, the latest quarter highlights that rapid store expansion alone may not be sufficient to satisfy investors unless accompanied by stronger same-store sales and higher productivity.
The sharp decline in the share price appears to be driven largely by valuation adjustments rather than any fundamental weakness in the business. With a strong portfolio of brands, an aggressive expansion strategy and favourable long-term industry dynamics, Trent remains well-positioned to capitalise on India's evolving retail landscape.
For long-term investors, the focus will now shift to the company's ability to improve store productivity, accelerate like-for-like growth and sustain profitability while continuing its ambitious expansion across the country.
