Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) has unveiled an ambitious long-term growth strategy, announcing plans to invest ₹30,000–40,000 crore.

Infrastructure Giant Bets on Green Energy, Electric Mobility, Defence and Advanced Manufacturing; Multiple Subsidiary IPOs Planned to Unlock Growth

Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) has unveiled an ambitious long-term growth strategy, announcing plans to invest ₹30,000–40,000 crore over the next two to three years while aiming to increase its annual revenue to ₹2 lakh crore (₹2 trillion) within the next five years. The Hyderabad-based infrastructure major plans to channel investments into high-growth sectors including renewable energy, electric mobility, battery manufacturing, defence, city gas distribution and advanced industrial technologies.

The company also intends to monetize several of its fast-growing businesses through periodic Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), a move expected to strengthen its balance sheet, unlock shareholder value, and support future expansion.

Aggressive Capital Investment to Drive Future Growth

MEIL's planned capital expenditure is among the largest announced by an Indian infrastructure conglomerate in recent years.

The investment will primarily focus on building capabilities in emerging industries that are expected to witness sustained demand over the next decade.

Key investment areas include:

  • Green and renewable energy

  • Battery cell manufacturing

  • Electric vehicle ecosystem

  • Defence manufacturing

  • Industrial automation

  • Artificial Intelligence-based technologies

  • City gas distribution

  • Infrastructure and engineering projects

Management believes these sectors align closely with India's long-term economic priorities and government-led infrastructure initiatives.

Revenue Expected to More Than Triple

The company expects strong business momentum over the coming years.

After generating approximately ₹60,000 crore in revenue during the previous financial year, MEIL expects turnover to increase to nearly ₹80,000 crore this year.

Its long-term objective is to reach ₹2 lakh crore in annual revenue within five years, supported by both its established infrastructure business and rapidly growing new-age businesses.

While engineering and construction currently contribute nearly 60% of the group's revenue, management expects emerging businesses to contribute a much larger share going forward.

Diversification Becomes the New Growth Strategy

Over the past decade, MEIL has evolved from a traditional engineering and construction company into a diversified industrial group.

Today, the company operates across more than a dozen sectors, including:

  • Infrastructure construction

  • Irrigation and water projects

  • Oil & gas

  • Renewable energy

  • Defence manufacturing

  • Electric mobility

  • City gas distribution

  • Offshore and onshore drilling equipment

  • Heavy engineering

  • Industrial manufacturing

This diversified business model provides multiple revenue streams while reducing dependence on a single industry.

Electric Mobility Emerges as a Key Growth Engine

Electric mobility is expected to become one of the group's fastest-growing verticals.

Through Olectra Greentech, MEIL has already established itself as one of India's leading electric bus manufacturers.

The company currently possesses:

  • Manufacturing capacity of 10,000 electric buses annually

  • Production exceeding 4,000 buses each year

  • A strong pending order book of nearly 8,000–10,000 electric buses

As state transport undertakings continue adopting electric public transportation, demand for electric buses is expected to remain robust over the next several years.

Expansion of Manufacturing Capacity on the Cards

To cater to rising demand, MEIL is evaluating additional manufacturing facilities across India.

The company is currently in discussions with multiple state governments regarding land allocation, incentives and infrastructure support.

Management has indicated that investment decisions will depend on factors such as:

  • Attractive industrial incentives

  • Availability of skilled manpower

  • Logistics connectivity

  • Ease of doing business

  • Industrial infrastructure

The expansion is expected to strengthen the company's production capabilities while reducing delivery timelines.

Battery Manufacturing and AI Become Strategic Priorities

Beyond electric buses, MEIL is also investing heavily in advanced manufacturing technologies.

Key focus areas include:

Battery Cell Manufacturing

Developing domestic battery production capabilities to support India's rapidly expanding EV ecosystem.

Physical Intelligence

Building next-generation industrial intelligence platforms integrating Artificial Intelligence, automation and robotics.

Smart Manufacturing

Deploying digital technologies to improve productivity, operational efficiency and quality control.

These investments are aimed at creating long-term competitive advantages in high-value manufacturing.

Strategic Global Partnership to Accelerate Innovation

MEIL recently entered into a strategic joint venture with Abu Dhabi-based Analogue to develop advanced Physical Intelligence technologies.

The partnership plans to invest between $300 million and $500 million over the next five years.

The collaboration is expected to focus on:

  • Industrial AI

  • Robotics

  • Intelligent automation

  • Smart infrastructure

  • Digital manufacturing

International collaborations are likely to strengthen MEIL's technological capabilities while supporting its diversification strategy.

IPO Pipeline to Unlock Value

The company also revealed plans to list several subsidiaries over the coming years.

The first company expected to enter the public markets is Evey Trans, India's largest fully electric bus operator.

Future IPO candidates include:

  • Defence manufacturing business

  • City gas distribution operations

  • Other high-growth technology-driven businesses

Regular listings could help improve capital efficiency while providing investors with direct exposure to individual business segments.

Growing Presence Across Multiple Industries

MEIL has steadily expanded into sectors that are expected to benefit from India's long-term economic transformation.

Its business portfolio now includes:

  • Infrastructure development

  • Renewable energy

  • Defence equipment

  • Electric buses

  • Urban transportation

  • Natural gas distribution

  • Offshore drilling equipment

  • Manufacturing

  • Smart technologies

This broad diversification positions the group to participate in several high-growth industries simultaneously.

Potential Entry into Electric Passenger Vehicles

Management also confirmed ongoing discussions with an electric passenger vehicle manufacturer regarding potential manufacturing operations in India.

Although specific details remain confidential, the development reflects MEIL's intention to strengthen its presence across the broader electric mobility ecosystem.

With rising EV adoption, supportive government policies and expanding charging infrastructure, India's electric vehicle market is expected to witness sustained long-term growth.

Government Policies Offer Strong Tailwinds

Several national initiatives continue to provide a supportive environment for MEIL's expansion strategy.

These include:

  • National Infrastructure Pipeline

  • PM Gati Shakti

  • Make in India

  • Atmanirbhar Bharat

  • National Green Hydrogen Mission

  • EV promotion policies

  • Renewable energy expansion

These initiatives are expected to generate long-term opportunities across the company's diversified business portfolio.

Challenges Remain Despite Strong Growth Prospects

While the long-term outlook appears promising, successful execution will remain critical.

Key risks include:

  • Large-scale project execution

  • Capital allocation efficiency

  • Rising input costs

  • Regulatory approvals

  • Competition in emerging sectors

  • Demand fluctuations

  • Financing requirements

The company's ability to execute multiple expansion projects simultaneously will determine whether it achieves its ambitious revenue targets.
