Benchmark Indices Extend Winning Streak to Third Session; Banking, IT and Metal Stocks Lead Broad-Based Market Rally

Indian equity markets continued their upward momentum on Friday, extending gains for the third consecutive trading session as investors responded positively to easing global crude oil prices, supportive international cues, improving foreign investor sentiment and strong buying in information technology (IT) stocks. The rally reflected growing confidence that domestic macroeconomic fundamentals remain resilient despite global uncertainties.

The BSE Sensex climbed as much as 655 points (0.85%) to an intraday high of 78,157, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced 202 points (0.83%) to touch 24,378 during morning trade. The rally was broad-based, with gains seen across large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap segments, indicating healthy participation from institutional as well as retail investors.

Market participants also welcomed the decline in international crude oil prices, which is expected to reduce inflationary pressure on the Indian economy and improve corporate profitability across several sectors.

Lower Crude Oil Prices Provide a Strong Macro Tailwind

One of the biggest catalysts behind Friday's rally was the continued decline in global crude oil prices.

Brent crude futures slipped below $72 per barrel, reaching their lowest levels since late February as shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz gradually normalised, easing fears of supply disruptions following recent geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

At the time of the market rally:

  • Brent Crude: Around $71.75 per barrel

  • WTI Crude: Around $68.63 per barrel

For India, which imports a majority of its crude oil requirements, lower oil prices offer multiple economic benefits, including:

  • Reduced import bill.

  • Lower inflationary pressures.

  • Improved fiscal and current account balances.

  • Better profitability for oil-consuming industries.

  • Stronger outlook for corporate earnings.

Lower energy costs also improve investor confidence by reducing pressure on interest rates and supporting domestic consumption.

Positive Global Markets Boost Risk Appetite

Global market sentiment remained supportive after the latest US economic data suggested a moderation in the labour market.

A softer-than-expected US employment report strengthened expectations that the US Federal Reserve could adopt a more accommodative monetary policy in the coming months.

The optimism pushed the Dow Jones Industrial Average to another record closing high, while investors increased exposure to emerging markets, including India.

Although technology-heavy US indices remained volatile due to continued weakness in semiconductor and artificial intelligence-related stocks, broader global risk appetite improved considerably.

Asian markets also traded largely positive, providing additional support to Indian equities.

IT Stocks Stage Strong Comeback

The information technology sector emerged as the biggest contributor to Friday's rally.

After facing pressure over the past several months due to concerns surrounding global technology spending, investors returned to quality IT stocks as valuations became increasingly attractive.

The Nifty IT Index gained nearly 3% during early trade before moderating slightly.

Leading gainers included:

  • HCL Technologies

  • Tech Mahindra

  • Infosys

  • Persistent Systems

  • Mphasis

Analysts believe that improving valuation comfort, coupled with expectations of stable demand from global clients, encouraged fresh buying in the sector.

However, experts caution that sustained gains will depend on upcoming quarterly earnings and management commentary regarding global technology spending.

Banking Stocks Continue to Anchor the Market

Apart from IT, private sector banking stocks continued to provide stability to benchmark indices.

Buying interest remained strong in:

  • HDFC Bank

  • ICICI Bank

  • Axis Bank

Financial stocks continue to attract institutional investors due to healthy credit growth, improving asset quality and resilient balance sheets.

Analysts also point to encouraging inflows under the Foreign Currency Non-Resident [FCNR(B)] deposit scheme, particularly from non-resident Indians in West Asia, as a positive development for banking sector liquidity.

Metal Stocks Benefit from Improving Commodity Outlook

Metal companies also witnessed healthy buying as softer energy prices improved earnings expectations for the sector.

Lower fuel costs generally reduce production expenses for steel and aluminium manufacturers while supporting margins across the metals industry.

Stocks such as Tata Steel, JSW Steel, and Hindalco Industries contributed to gains in the Nifty Metal Index, making it one of the best-performing sectoral indices during the session.

Broader Markets Reflect Healthy Participation

The positive momentum was not confined to benchmark stocks alone.

The broader market also traded firmly higher:

  • Nifty Midcap 100: Up around 0.14%

  • Nifty Smallcap 100: Up around 0.33%

The gains across mid-cap and small-cap indices indicate growing investor confidence and suggest that buying interest is becoming increasingly broad-based rather than concentrated in a handful of large-cap companies.

Foreign Investor Selling Continues to Moderate

Another encouraging development has been the gradual reduction in selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs).

Although overseas investors have remained cautious in recent months due to global uncertainties, the pace of outflows has slowed considerably.

Market participants believe stabilising global interest rate expectations and India's relatively strong economic outlook could encourage foreign investors to increase allocations to Indian equities in the coming quarters.

Continued moderation in FII selling would improve liquidity and support market valuations.

Technical Setup Points Towards Further Upside

Technical analysts believe the market structure remains constructive.

According to market experts:

  • Immediate support for the Nifty lies between 24,000 and 24,170.

  • Sustained trading above 24,300 could trigger the next leg of the rally towards 24,500–24,600.

  • The Sensex may attempt to move towards the 78,500–79,000 zone if buying momentum remains intact.

Momentum indicators, declining volatility and positive derivative positioning continue to support the bullish outlook.

However, traders should remain prepared for intermittent profit booking after the recent sharp advance.

Key Triggers Investors Should Watch

Going forward, several domestic and global developments will determine the market's direction:

Corporate Earnings Season

The upcoming quarterly earnings announcements will provide insights into corporate profitability and demand trends across sectors.

Crude Oil Prices

Any fresh escalation in geopolitical tensions affecting oil supply could quickly alter market sentiment.

Foreign Institutional Flows

Sustained FII inflows would strengthen liquidity and support higher market valuations.

Global Monetary Policy

Expectations regarding US Federal Reserve interest rate decisions will continue to influence global capital flows.

Domestic Economic Data

Inflation, industrial production, GST collections and credit growth will remain important indicators for investors.

Sectoral Outlook

Based on current market conditions, analysts expect the following sectors to remain in focus:

  • Information Technology

  • Banking and Financial Services

  • Capital Goods

  • Infrastructure

  • Metals

  • Select Consumer Discretionary Stocks

Defensive sectors may witness relatively slower participation if the current risk-on sentiment continues.
