Avenue Supermarts Reports 15.1% Revenue Growth, But Misses Street Expectations; Analysts Stay Constructive on Long-Term Growth Story

Shares of Avenue Supermarts Ltd., the operator of India's largest value retail chain DMart, witnessed heavy selling on Friday after the company released its business update for the first quarter of FY2026-27. While the retailer continued to post double-digit revenue growth, the figures fell short of market expectations, prompting investors to book profits after the stock's strong run this year.

The stock declined nearly 5% during intraday trading to ₹3,984.20 on the BSE and extended its losses to around 8% over the last two trading sessions. The fall stood in contrast to the broader market, where benchmark indices traded firmly higher, supported by gains in IT and metal stocks.

The correction reflects growing concerns over slowing sales productivity and a moderation in store expansion after an aggressive rollout in the previous quarter.

Revenue Growth Slows Despite Strong Retail Network

Avenue Supermarts reported standalone revenue of ₹18,343.49 crore for the quarter ended June 2026, representing a 15.1% year-on-year increase. Although the company maintained healthy double-digit growth, analysts were expecting stronger numbers considering the significant store additions made earlier this year and the supportive inflation environment.

The retailer's total operational store count reached 503 outlets as of June 30, 2026. However, one of its stores in Sanpada, Navi Mumbai, remains temporarily closed for reconstruction, slightly impacting the operational footprint.

Investors were particularly disappointed because the revenue growth did not fully reflect the benefits of the aggressive expansion undertaken in the previous quarter.

Aggressive Expansion Followed by Slower Store Additions

One of the key reasons behind the cautious market reaction was the slowdown in new store openings during the quarter.

After launching 58 new stores in the January–March 2026 quarter, Avenue Supermarts opened only three stores during the April–June period. While management has consistently emphasized disciplined expansion over rapid growth, the slower pace has led analysts to reassess near-term revenue expectations.

Retail analysts note that newly opened stores generally require several quarters before reaching optimal productivity, temporarily weighing on sales per store and operating efficiency.

Store Productivity Declines

Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL) highlighted that the company's operational productivity weakened during the quarter.

According to the brokerage:

  • Annualised revenue per store declined approximately 4% year-on-year to around ₹146 crore.

  • Revenue per square foot also slipped nearly 3%, indicating softer customer spending and lower utilisation across the expanded retail network.

The brokerage believes that although new stores initially dilute productivity metrics, the current slowdown appears weaker than expected given prevailing inflationary support in the consumer staples segment.

Stock Corrects Despite Strong Performance in 2026

The recent correction comes after a period of strong outperformance.

Despite losing nearly 8% over the last two trading sessions, DMart shares remain around 8% higher in calendar year 2026, significantly outperforming the benchmark BSE Sensex, which has declined during the same period.

The sharp fall therefore appears to be a valuation-driven correction rather than a reflection of any major deterioration in the company's business fundamentals.

Given DMart's premium valuation, even modest earnings disappointments tend to trigger strong market reactions.

Board to Review Fund Raising Plan

Along with the quarterly business update, Avenue Supermarts informed stock exchanges that its Board of Directors will meet on July 11, 2026, to consider:

  • Approval of the financial results for the quarter ended June 2026.

  • Raising funds through the issuance of debt securities via private placement.

The proposed borrowing is expected to provide additional financial flexibility for future store expansion, supply chain investments, and infrastructure development.

Market participants will closely monitor the company's capital allocation strategy during the upcoming board meeting.

Retail Sector Faces Rising Competitive Pressure

India's organised grocery retail market continues to witness intense competition from multiple fronts.

While DMart remains one of the country's most efficient brick-and-mortar retailers, it now faces increasing competition from:

  • Traditional neighbourhood kirana stores

  • Modern retail chains

  • Quick-commerce platforms

  • Online grocery marketplaces

Rapid delivery platforms such as Blinkit, BigBasket, and Zepto are expanding aggressively in metropolitan markets, changing consumer shopping behaviour by offering deliveries within minutes.

Although DMart has strengthened its online presence through DMart Ready, analysts believe its digital business remains relatively small compared to specialised quick-commerce players.

ICRA Highlights Strengths and Challenges

Rating agency ICRA continues to view Avenue Supermarts positively, citing its proven Every Day Low Cost (EDLC) and Every Day Low Price (EDLP) strategy as a major competitive advantage.

The agency believes DMart's efficient procurement systems, strong vendor relationships, and disciplined inventory management continue to generate healthy customer footfalls and stable operating margins.

However, ICRA also pointed out that the company's e-commerce business remains loss-making and requires periodic investment. Nevertheless, the agency noted that management has adopted a measured expansion strategy to minimise cash burn while gradually strengthening its digital capabilities.

Brokerages Remain Optimistic on Long-Term Growth

Despite the weak quarterly update, most brokerages continue to maintain a positive long-term outlook for Avenue Supermarts.

According to Geojit Investments, the company's investment thesis remains intact due to:

  • Significant opportunity for nationwide store expansion.

  • Consistent execution track record.

  • Stable demand for essential consumer products.

  • Strong brand recognition in value retailing.

  • Disciplined cost management.

The brokerage believes the company's physical store network remains its biggest competitive strength, while the gradual expansion of DMart Ready will complement future growth.

Geojit has maintained its 'Buy' recommendation with a target price of ₹5,063, implying meaningful upside from current levels.

What Investors Should Watch

Going forward, investors will closely track several key indicators that could influence the stock's performance:

  • Same-store sales growth (SSSG)

  • Store productivity improvements

  • Pace of new store openings

  • Gross margin and operating margin trends

  • Performance of DMart Ready

  • Consumer spending trends amid changing inflation levels

  • Management commentary during the Q1 earnings announcement

Strong execution across these parameters will be critical in determining whether the recent correction proves temporary or signals a broader moderation in growth.
