Indian information technology (IT) stocks staged a sharp recovery on Thursday, with the Nifty IT Index climbing nearly 4% in intraday trade after witnessing heavy selling over the past several weeks.

Infosys, TCS, HCLTech and other technology majors lead the rebound after a steep month-long correction, but brokerages warn that AI-led pricing pressure and weak global demand could continue to weigh on the sector.

Indian information technology (IT) stocks staged a sharp recovery on Thursday, with the Nifty IT Index climbing nearly 4% in intraday trade after witnessing heavy selling over the past several weeks. The rally was driven by broad-based buying across large-cap and mid-cap IT companies as investors took advantage of attractive valuations following one of the sector's steepest corrections in recent years.

The recovery helped the Nifty IT Index emerge as the top-performing sector on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), significantly outperforming the benchmark Nifty50. Market participants viewed the bounce as a combination of value buying, improving global sentiment, and optimism ahead of the upcoming quarterly earnings season.

However, despite the strong gains, analysts remain cautious about the medium-term outlook, citing concerns over slowing global technology spending, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven pricing pressure, and continued macroeconomic uncertainty in key overseas markets.

IT Heavyweights Lead the Market Rally

Buying was visible across the entire technology space, with frontline IT companies witnessing strong investor interest.

Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) surged up to 5%, while HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, Coforge, LTIMindtree, Persistent Systems, Mphasis and Oracle Financial Services Software also recorded gains between 3% and 5%.

The rally extended beyond large-cap companies, with mid-tier IT firms outperforming during the session. Sonata Software, Zensar Technologies and eClerx Services advanced between 6% and 10%, indicating renewed confidence across the broader technology sector.

The widespread participation suggests that investors are selectively accumulating quality technology stocks after the recent sharp correction.

A Sharp Correction Created Attractive Valuations

Thursday's recovery comes after an extended period of weakness in Indian technology stocks.

The Nifty IT Index had declined for four consecutive trading sessions before the rebound and closed at its lowest level since May 2021. Over those four sessions alone, the sector lost nearly 7%.

The broader trend has been even more pronounced. During the last 20 trading sessions, the Nifty IT Index corrected around 17%, while the benchmark Nifty50 gained approximately 2.2% during the same period.

Since the beginning of calendar year 2026, the technology index has fallen nearly 32%, compared with an 8% decline in the broader market.

Several leading companies have witnessed significant corrections over the past month. Stocks such as Infosys, TCS, HCLTech, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, LTIMindtree and Tata Elxsi have declined between 12% and 18%, while Persistent Systems and KPIT Technologies have corrected even more sharply.

The steep fall has improved valuations, encouraging investors to return to fundamentally strong companies.

Global Factors Provide Temporary Relief

Improving global market sentiment also supported Thursday's rebound.

Investors welcomed signs of easing inflationary pressures in the United States, raising hopes that interest rate conditions may remain supportive for global technology spending.

Market experts also pointed to the correction in South Korea's AI-driven technology stocks, which has prompted some global investors to rotate capital toward other Asian markets, including India.

In addition, easing geopolitical concerns and softer crude oil prices improved overall risk appetite, encouraging fresh buying across growth-oriented sectors such as information technology.

AI Revolution Continues to Reshape the Industry

Artificial intelligence remains both the biggest opportunity and one of the largest challenges for Indian IT companies.

While enterprises across the world are increasing investments in AI-powered solutions, the technology is simultaneously improving productivity and putting pressure on pricing for traditional outsourcing services.

Many global clients are reassessing their technology budgets as AI enables automation of routine software development, testing, and support functions. This has slowed discretionary spending on conventional IT projects and increased competition across the industry.

Indian IT companies are investing aggressively in AI capabilities, but analysts believe it will take time before these investments translate into meaningful revenue growth.

Brokerages Remain Cautious Ahead of Q1FY27 Results

Despite Thursday's rally, brokerage firms continue to adopt a cautious stance on the sector.

According to analysts, the April-June quarter, which is usually seasonally strong for Indian IT companies, is expected to remain relatively weak this year.

Brokerages believe geopolitical uncertainties, delayed client decision-making, slower discretionary spending, and AI-led pricing pressure may continue to affect revenue growth during the first half of FY27.

Several analysts also expect investors to focus closely on management commentary regarding demand trends, large deal pipelines, hiring plans, and the financial impact of AI adoption during the upcoming earnings season.

Any downward revision to revenue guidance could keep pressure on technology stocks despite the recent correction.

Valuations Offer Comfort, But Earnings Will Be Key

Although valuations have become significantly more reasonable after the sharp correction, analysts believe sustained upside will depend on improving business fundamentals rather than valuation alone.

For the sector to witness a meaningful re-rating, investors will look for evidence that global technology spending is stabilising, revenue growth is improving, and AI-related business opportunities are beginning to offset pricing pressure in traditional outsourcing services.

Companies demonstrating strong execution, healthy order books, diversified client portfolios, and successful AI monetisation strategies are expected to remain preferred investment choices.

Outlook

Thursday's rally reflects renewed confidence in India's technology sector after weeks of relentless selling. Attractive valuations, improving global sentiment, and bargain buying have provided short-term support to IT stocks, helping the sector outperform the broader market.

However, the coming weeks will be crucial as investors evaluate Q1FY27 earnings, management guidance, and global demand trends. While long-term growth prospects for Indian IT remain intact, sustained recovery will depend on stronger revenue visibility, resilient client spending, and successful execution of AI-led growth strategies in an increasingly competitive global technology landscape.
