Stock Hits Fresh 52-Week Low, Down 57% from Peak as Revenue Slowdown and Margin Pressure Trigger Investor Sell-Off
Shares of KPIT Technologies Ltd. plunged as much as 15% during Wednesday's trading session after the automotive software and engineering company issued a weaker-than-expected business update for the first quarter of FY27. The earnings warning, driven by an unexpected slowdown in demand from European automobile manufacturers, sparked heavy selling across the counter, pushing the stock to its lowest level in nearly four years.
The stock slipped to an intraday low of ₹570.75 on the BSE, marking a fresh 52-week low and extending its sharp correction from the record high of ₹1,328.80 touched in September 2025. At around 10:30 AM, the stock was trading near ₹576, down nearly 14%, even as the broader market remained in positive territory.
With Wednesday's decline, KPIT Technologies has now lost nearly 57% of its market value from its 52-week high, making it one of the weakest-performing mid-cap IT stocks in 2026.
Unexpected Business Slowdown Hits Q1 Performance
In its quarterly business update, KPIT Technologies informed investors that business momentum weakened significantly during the final weeks of the April–June quarter.
The company stated that several leading European Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) unexpectedly reduced technology spending after issuing their own profit warnings and lowering business outlooks. These sudden decisions resulted in project delays and lower revenue than previously anticipated.
Management clarified that the deterioration became visible only during the closing weeks of the quarter and therefore could not be anticipated earlier.
Revenue and Profitability to Miss Earlier Estimates
KPIT now expects its reported US dollar revenue for the first quarter of FY27 to decline by approximately 1% year-on-year.
More importantly, the company warned that both EBITDA margins and net profit margins will contract sequentially. Since the revenue decline occurred abruptly, the company had limited opportunity to reduce operating costs, leading to a larger-than-expected impact on profitability.
The weaker guidance has raised concerns that FY27 could become a transition year after several years of strong earnings growth.
European Auto Industry Challenges Affect Technology Spending
KPIT Technologies generates a substantial share of its revenue from global automobile manufacturers, particularly in Europe, where the company provides software engineering and digital mobility solutions.
Several European automakers have recently reported slowing demand, declining profitability, and rising competitive pressure, prompting them to review discretionary spending and postpone certain technology programs.
The slowdown has directly affected engineering service providers such as KPIT, whose business depends on long-term automotive research and development projects.
Management Remains Optimistic About Long-Term Growth
Despite the near-term weakness, KPIT Technologies maintained that the structural growth story remains intact.
The company believes the current slowdown represents a temporary correction rather than a long-term decline in demand. According to management, cost pressures on automobile manufacturers are likely to accelerate outsourcing and offshoring of software engineering work over the coming years.
The company continues to witness encouraging demand across several strategic areas, including:
-
Software-defined vehicles
-
Autonomous driving technologies
-
Connected mobility platforms
-
Vehicle engineering and design
-
Artificial Intelligence-powered automotive solutions
-
After-sales digital engineering
KPIT also highlighted healthy demand from the United States, India, and South Korea, along with continued traction in the commercial vehicle and off-highway equipment segments.
AI Investments and Strong Order Pipeline Provide Confidence
Management stated that it continues to invest aggressively in AI-driven engineering platforms, automation tools, and next-generation mobility software to improve productivity and strengthen long-term competitiveness.
The company also indicated that its order pipeline remains healthy, supported by new customer additions and ongoing digital transformation initiatives within the automotive industry.
These investments are expected to support margin recovery once client spending normalises.
Recovery Expected During Second Half of FY27
While acknowledging that the first half of FY27 will likely remain challenging, KPIT expects business momentum to improve gradually during the second half of the financial year.
Management anticipates stronger sequential growth beginning in the later quarters, with Q4 FY27 expected to mark the start of a recovery. The company believes its diversified customer base, expanding order book, and increasing adoption of software-defined vehicles will support sustainable growth beyond FY27.
Brokerages Turn Cautious After Earnings Warning
Following the business update, brokerage firm JM Financial Institutional Securities downgraded the stock to a 'Reduce' rating and lowered its target price to ₹620 per share.
The brokerage also reduced its earnings estimates for FY28 and FY29 by 12–13%, citing weaker near-term demand, delayed recovery in Europe, and continued pressure on operating margins.
Analysts noted that while outsourcing trends should benefit KPIT over the long run, earnings visibility for the next few quarters has weakened considerably.
Technical Picture Turns Weak
The sharp decline has significantly weakened the stock's technical structure.
After breaking below several important support levels, KPIT Technologies has entered a strong bearish trend, accompanied by unusually high trading volumes. The fall to a fresh 52-week low indicates that investor sentiment remains negative in the short term.
Technical analysts believe the stock may remain volatile until management delivers evidence of improving order inflows and earnings recovery.
Investor Outlook
KPIT Technologies remains one of India's leading automotive software companies with deep expertise in electric vehicles, autonomous driving, connected mobility, and digital engineering. However, the company's latest earnings warning has highlighted its sensitivity to global automobile industry spending cycles.
While the long-term fundamentals continue to be supported by rising software content in vehicles and increasing outsourcing by global automakers, investors may remain cautious until demand from European customers stabilises.
Going forward, quarterly earnings, client spending trends, new deal wins, AI-led product adoption, and recovery in the global automotive sector will be the key factors determining the stock's future performance. Until there is greater clarity on business momentum, the stock is likely to witness heightened volatility despite its strong long-term growth potential.
