Strong Store Expansion, Premium Brand Portfolio and Positive Brokerage Outlook Keep Tata Group Retailer in Focus
Trent Ltd., the retail arm of the Tata Group, continued to outperform the broader market on Monday as its shares climbed nearly 3% during intraday trading despite weakness in benchmark indices. The stock touched an intraday high of ₹3,312 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), reflecting sustained investor confidence in the company's long-term growth strategy.
The recent rally has been supported by favourable brokerage reports, which highlight Trent's robust expansion plans, improving consumption outlook and strong execution capabilities. Analysts from ICICI Securities and Motilal Oswal Financial Services have reiterated their positive stance, expecting the company to continue delivering healthy revenue and profit growth over the coming years.
Strong Momentum Despite Market Weakness
Trent has significantly outperformed the broader market in recent weeks. Over the past month, the stock has surged nearly 17%, compared with around 2% gains in the Nifty 50. Since the beginning of calendar year 2026, the stock has advanced about 15%, while the benchmark index has remained under pressure.
Although the stock has corrected over the past year from its all-time highs, investors have gradually returned as confidence improves regarding the company's long-term earnings trajectory and expansion strategy.
Powerful Brand Portfolio Strengthens Competitive Position
Trent has established itself as one of India's leading organised retail companies through a portfolio of successful consumer brands.
Its flagship businesses include:
- Westside – Premium fashion, apparel and lifestyle retail.
- Zudio – Fast-growing value fashion chain catering to budget-conscious consumers.
- Star Hypermarket – Grocery, food and daily essentials retailing.
The diversified retail portfolio allows Trent to cater to multiple consumer segments while benefiting from India's growing organised retail market.
Expansion Remains the Biggest Growth Driver
Store expansion continues to be the cornerstone of Trent's long-term strategy.
Chairman Noel Tata has reaffirmed the company's ambitious plans to open:
- Around 50 Westside stores every year
- 200–250 Zudio stores annually
- 25–40 Star stores each year
Management also sees significant long-term potential to expand the network to nearly 700 Westside outlets and approximately 5,000 Zudio stores, compared with the current footprint of roughly 300 Westside and 960 Zudio stores.
Such aggressive expansion is expected to remain the key contributor to future revenue growth.
Tier II and III Cities Fuel Future Opportunity
A large share of Trent's recent store openings has been concentrated in smaller cities.
Nearly 80% of the Zudio stores opened during FY26 were launched in Tier II and Tier III markets. While these locations initially generate lower revenue per square foot than metro stores, analysts believe profitability improves significantly as stores mature and customer traffic increases.
India's rapid urbanisation, rising disposable incomes and increasing preference for organised retail continue to create substantial growth opportunities in these underpenetrated markets.
Short-Term Pressure on Same-Store Sales
Like many retailers, Trent has witnessed moderation in Like-for-Like (LFL) sales growth during FY26.
The slowdown has largely been attributed to:
- Softer consumer demand in the apparel segment.
- Rapid addition of new stores.
- Lower initial productivity from recently opened outlets.
However, management expects same-store sales growth to gradually recover into the low double-digit range as newer stores mature and consumer demand strengthens.
Brokerages Remain Bullish
ICICI Securities Maintains Positive View
ICICI Securities believes Trent's long-term growth story remains intact despite near-term moderation in LFL growth.
The brokerage expects the company to deliver:
- 22% Revenue CAGR
- 23% EBITDA CAGR
- 20% Profit CAGR between FY26 and FY28.
It has maintained a 'Buy' recommendation with a revised target price of ₹3,862, adjusted for the recent bonus issue.
Motilal Oswal Sees Continued Upside
Motilal Oswal Financial Services has also reiterated its 'Buy' recommendation with an unchanged target price of ₹3,500.
The brokerage expects Trent to benefit from:
- Recovery in same-store sales.
- Continued rapid expansion of the Zudio network.
- Entry into emerging product categories including footwear, beauty, innerwear and lab-grown diamonds.
- International expansion opportunities for Westside and Zudio.
These initiatives are expected to diversify revenue streams and strengthen the company's long-term growth profile.
Retail Sector Supported by India's Consumption Story
India's retail sector continues to benefit from favourable structural trends including rising household incomes, urbanisation, premiumisation and increasing penetration of organised retail.
As one of the country's fastest-growing retail companies, Trent is well positioned to capitalise on these long-term consumption trends through its scalable business model and strong brand recognition.
Management remains optimistic that continued investments in customer experience, supply chain efficiency and store expansion will help sustain growth over the coming years.
Investment Outlook
Trent continues to be one of the preferred retail stocks among brokerage firms, backed by a proven management team, strong execution capabilities and a clear long-term expansion roadmap. While the rapid pace of store additions has temporarily affected same-store sales growth, analysts believe this is a short-term phenomenon that is likely to reverse as newer stores mature.
With ambitious expansion plans, a diversified brand portfolio and positive outlook from leading brokerages, Trent remains well positioned to benefit from India's growing consumption economy. Investors will closely track quarterly earnings, store productivity, margin trends and expansion progress as key indicators of the company's future performance.
