Vedanta Tumbles 7% on Block Deal as IT Stocks Weigh on Markets

Indian equity markets staged a smart recovery from early losses on Tuesday, with buying interest in pharmaceutical stocks helping benchmark indices trade in positive territory. While weakness in information technology and metal stocks capped gains, the resilience displayed by frontline indices reflected underlying strength in domestic markets.

At 10:00 AM, the BSE Sensex was trading 85 points higher at 77,179.26, while the NSE Nifty50 gained 24.70 points to 24,127.60. The benchmark indices managed to erase opening losses as investors accumulated healthcare and pharma counters amid mixed global cues.

Broader Markets Continue to Outperform

The broader market remained upbeat, extending its recent outperformance over large-cap stocks. The Nifty MidCap index rose 0.15%, while the Nifty SmallCap index advanced 0.21%, indicating healthy participation across market segments.

Market experts believe that sustained domestic liquidity, robust retail participation, and improving earnings visibility for mid-sized companies continue to support the broader market despite intermittent volatility in frontline indices.

Pharma Stocks Emerge as Market Leaders

Healthcare and pharmaceutical companies were among the strongest performers in early trade. Buying interest in major pharma names helped offset weakness in other sectors and supported benchmark indices.

Shares of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, and Cipla witnessed notable gains as investors shifted towards defensive sectors amid uncertainty in global markets.

The Nifty Pharma index gained more than 1%, making it the best-performing sectoral index during the morning session. Analysts attribute the rally to expectations of steady earnings growth and resilient export demand from key international markets.

IT Sector Faces Selling Pressure

The technology sector witnessed profit booking after a recent rally, dragging the Nifty IT index lower.

Leading IT companies including Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and LTIMindtree emerged among the top losers within the sector. Investors remained cautious ahead of upcoming global economic data and concerns regarding discretionary technology spending in major overseas markets.

The weakness in IT stocks prevented the benchmark indices from posting stronger gains despite positive momentum in pharma and healthcare shares.

Vedanta Shares Plunge on Heavy Block Deal Activity

Metal major Vedanta witnessed sharp selling pressure, with its stock falling nearly 7% to ₹284.45 during intraday trade.

More than 100 million shares reportedly changed hands through block deals on the NSE within the first half hour of trading, triggering concerns about large-scale stake transfers and prompting traders to book profits.

The sharp decline made Vedanta one of the biggest losers on the benchmark indices and weighed on the overall performance of the metal sector.

Market participants are closely monitoring developments surrounding the transaction and its potential implications for the company’s shareholder structure.

Bharti Airtel Strengthens African Presence

In a significant corporate development, Bharti Airtel announced the completion of its acquisition of a 16.3% stake in Airtel Africa from ICIL.

Following the transaction, Airtel's ownership in Airtel Africa has increased to approximately 79%, reinforcing its strategic commitment to the fast-growing African telecommunications market.

The company will issue 146.71 million equity shares on a preferential basis to complete the transaction.

Analysts view the acquisition as a positive long-term move that could enhance Airtel’s exposure to high-growth mobile and digital service markets across Africa.

DEE Development Engineers Secures Renewable Energy Order

Engineering company DEE Development Engineers reported that its subsidiary, DEE Fabricom India, has secured a ₹64 crore order for the supply of windmill towers from Ganeko Solar.

The order strengthens the company's presence in the renewable energy infrastructure segment and adds to its growing order book.

The development also highlights increasing investment activity in India's clean energy ecosystem as the country accelerates its renewable energy targets.

IPO Market Remains Active

Primary market activity remained robust with several public offerings attracting investor attention.

Turtlemint Fintech Solutions' ₹882.67 crore IPO entered its final day of subscription. The issue comprises a combination of fresh equity issuance and an offer-for-sale component.

Meanwhile, Advit Jewels and Waterways Leisure Tourism launched their public offerings for subscription. The issues are valued at ₹165.16 crore and ₹585 crore respectively.

Investors continue to closely track subscription levels, especially as IPO markets remain one of the most active segments of India's capital markets in 2026.

Outlook: Markets Seek Fresh Triggers

Despite weakness in select sectors, the ability of benchmark indices to recover from early losses suggests that investor sentiment remains constructive.

Analysts believe Nifty's ability to sustain above the 24,100 level could provide a platform for further upside, provided global market conditions remain stable and domestic institutional buying continues.

Market participants will now focus on corporate developments, IPO subscription trends, global equity movements, crude oil prices, and foreign institutional investor activity for directional cues during the remainder of the trading session.
