Indian Navy Contract Strengthens Company's Position in High-Technology Defence Manufacturing

Shares of Bharat Forge climbed to a fresh all-time high on Monday after the company announced a significant defence contract worth ₹425 crore from the Ministry of Defence. The stock gained more than 2 per cent during intraday trade, touching ₹2,113.60 on the NSE, as investors cheered the company's growing presence in India's defence and aerospace sectors.

The latest order further reinforces Bharat Forge's transformation from a traditional automotive component manufacturer into a diversified engineering and defence technology company. Market participants view the development as a major milestone that could unlock long-term growth opportunities and reduce the company's dependence on cyclical automotive demand.

Landmark Naval Order Marks Entry into Marine Gas Turbine Segment

Under the contract, Bharat Forge will supply 1.25 MW Gas Turbine Generators (GTGs) for Kolkata-class warships of the Indian Navy over a five-year period. The generators will replace lower-capacity systems currently in operation and improve onboard power generation capabilities.

The project is particularly significant because it marks Bharat Forge's entry into the marine gas turbine business, a niche segment characterized by high technological complexity and substantial barriers to entry. The company will also establish a dedicated testing and integration facility to support the execution of the project and future marine propulsion programs.

Industry experts believe this breakthrough could pave the way for additional opportunities in naval propulsion systems, maintenance contracts, and future indigenous defence projects.

Defence Portfolio Continues to Expand

Over the past few years, Bharat Forge has steadily strengthened its defence ecosystem through investments across multiple segments. The company has developed capabilities in artillery systems, aerospace components, unmanned aerial vehicles, ammunition manufacturing, and advanced engineering solutions.

India's increasing focus on defence self-reliance and indigenous manufacturing has created a favorable environment for domestic defence companies. Bharat Forge has emerged as one of the leading private-sector beneficiaries of this policy shift, securing multiple strategic contracts across defence platforms.

The latest naval order adds another important vertical to the company's expanding defence portfolio and enhances its long-term revenue visibility.

Analysts See Strong Long-Term Potential

Brokerage firm ICICI Securities believes the contract significantly strengthens Bharat Forge's long-term investment proposition. According to analysts, the marine propulsion segment offers attractive opportunities due to its specialized nature, recurring maintenance requirements, and export potential.

The brokerage highlighted that Bharat Forge already possesses a defence order book estimated at around ₹11,000 crore. Combined with its growing aerospace business, drone manufacturing capabilities, artillery systems, and explosives manufacturing initiatives, the company appears well-positioned to benefit from India's rising defence expenditure.

Analysts also note that a larger contribution from defence and aerospace businesses could help improve earnings stability by reducing the company's exposure to fluctuations in the automotive sector.

Stock Outperforms Broader Market

Investor confidence in Bharat Forge's strategic transformation is clearly reflected in its stock performance. The shares have gained approximately 10 per cent over the past month, significantly outperforming the benchmark Nifty 50 index.

Since the beginning of 2026, the stock has surged around 42 per cent, while the Nifty has advanced only about 3 per cent during the same period. Over the last twelve months, Bharat Forge has delivered returns of nearly 63 per cent, compared with a 9 per cent gain in the broader market.

The sharp appreciation reflects growing optimism surrounding the company's expanding defence business and its ability to capitalize on emerging opportunities in high-value engineering segments.

Outlook: Defence Could Drive the Next Phase of Growth

As India continues to modernize its armed forces and promote indigenous defence manufacturing, companies with advanced technological capabilities are expected to witness robust growth opportunities. Bharat Forge's successful entry into the marine gas turbine segment demonstrates its ability to compete in highly specialized areas of defence engineering.

With a strong order pipeline, expanding defence portfolio, and increasing participation in strategic national projects, the company appears well-positioned to sustain its growth momentum over the coming years. For investors, the latest defence contract underscores Bharat Forge's evolution into a diversified high-technology engineering enterprise with multiple long-term growth drivers.
