Dozens Remain Hospitalised After Toxic Gas Leak at Fish Meal Export Unit in Tiruvallur District

A tragic industrial accident in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district has claimed five lives after an ammonia gas leak at a private fish meal export factory exposed dozens of workers to toxic fumes. The incident, which occurred on June 21 in Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam, has sparked concerns over workplace safety standards and emergency preparedness in industrial facilities handling hazardous chemicals.

According to the state's Health and Family Welfare Department, the leak occurred during routine operations at the factory, affecting a total of 74 workers. While two workers died shortly after the incident, three more women succumbed to their injuries overnight, taking the death toll to five.

The exposure resulted in severe health complications among workers, including breathing difficulties, persistent coughing, chest pain, eye irritation, and acute respiratory distress. Medical experts note that ammonia inhalation can cause significant damage to the respiratory system, particularly when exposure occurs in confined industrial environments.

Following the incident, emergency response teams, district administration officials, police personnel, and fire and rescue services rushed to the site to contain the situation and evacuate affected workers. Patients were immediately transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

As of Monday, 67 workers continue to receive medical care across multiple healthcare facilities. Several patients remain in critical condition and require ventilator support. Hospitals treating the victims include Vels Medical College Hospital, Venkateshwara Medical College Hospital, Stanley Medical College Hospital, and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai.

The scale of the medical response highlights the seriousness of the accident. Healthcare authorities have mobilized specialized teams to monitor patients suffering from respiratory complications and provide intensive care where necessary.

The exact cause of the ammonia leak remains under investigation. Officials are examining operational procedures, equipment maintenance records, and safety compliance measures at the facility.
