High Command to Finalise Ministerial Berths, KPCC Leadership and Upcoming Rajya Sabha Strategy

Bengaluru/New Delhi: Karnataka Chief Minister-designate D K Shivakumar and outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah are set to hold key discussions with the Congress high command in New Delhi as the party moves forward with the formation of the new state cabinet following its decisive electoral victory.

Both leaders are expected to meet senior Congress leadership, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and other central leaders, to finalize the composition of the new Council of Ministers ahead of Shivakumar's swearing-in ceremony scheduled for June 3.

Cabinet Formation Emerges as First Major Challenge

With Karnataka allowed a maximum strength of 34 ministers, including the Chief Minister, the Congress leadership faces the difficult task of accommodating numerous ministerial aspirants while maintaining political and regional balance.

Party insiders indicate that the selection process is likely to consider caste representation, regional interests, legislative experience, and loyalty to the party leadership. Several senior leaders and first-time legislators are reportedly lobbying for cabinet positions.

The challenge is particularly significant as many members from Siddaramaiah's previous cabinet are seeking reappointment, while newly elected legislators are also hoping to secure ministerial responsibilities.

High Command Focused on Balancing Factions

Sources within the party suggest that the Congress leadership is aiming to create a balanced cabinet that reflects the state's diverse social and political landscape. Discussions are expected to focus on ensuring representation for key communities and regions while preserving unity within the party.

Speculation continues regarding the possibility of appointing multiple Deputy Chief Ministers, a move that could help accommodate various power centers within the state unit. However, no final decision has been announced.

Lobbying Intensifies in National Capital

Several Congress leaders and ministerial hopefuls have already reached New Delhi to present their cases before the party leadership. Meetings between aspirants, senior leaders, and central observers have intensified over the past few days.

Political observers believe the final cabinet list could feature a mix of experienced faces and younger leaders, reflecting both continuity and generational change within the Karnataka Congress.

Focus Also on New Karnataka Congress Chief

Another important issue expected to be discussed is the appointment of a new Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President. Since Shivakumar will assume the role of Chief Minister, the party will need a new state unit chief.

Senior Congress leader Satish Jarkiholi is being widely viewed as a strong contender for the position. The leadership is expected to weigh organizational experience and electoral considerations before making a final decision.

Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council Elections on Agenda

Apart from cabinet formation, Congress leaders are also likely to discuss candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha and Karnataka Legislative Council elections scheduled for June 18.

Given its current strength in the Assembly, the ruling Congress is expected to secure three of the four Rajya Sabha seats and a majority of the Legislative Council seats up for election. Candidate selection for these positions is likely to be a key part of the Delhi discussions.

Political Significance for Karnataka

The upcoming decisions will shape the direction of the new Karnataka government and determine the balance of power within the Congress organization. Investors, businesses and political observers will closely watch the cabinet formation process, as the composition of the government could influence policy priorities, infrastructure spending and economic initiatives in one of India's most important states.

As the Congress leadership works to finalize its choices, all eyes remain on New Delhi, where the party's next set of decisions could define Karnataka's political landscape for years to come.
