Rohini, Dwarka and Britannia Chowk Among Major Locations Receiving New Names
The Delhi government has approved the renaming of several Metro stations, roads and civic landmarks across the national capital in a move aimed at improving public identification of key locations while honouring important personalities associated with Delhi’s social and cultural history.
The decision was finalised during a meeting of the State Names Authority chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. According to officials, the initiative seeks to create stronger connections between public places and nearby institutions, neighbourhoods and historical figures familiar to residents.
One of the most significant changes announced is the renaming of Rohini West Metro Station as “Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital Metro Station.” Since the station is located close to the well-known hospital, the revised name is expected to make commuting and navigation easier for passengers, especially visitors unfamiliar with the area.
Similarly, Rohini East Metro Station will now be known simply as “Rohini Metro Station.” Government officials stated that the shorter name would improve clarity on Metro maps, route displays and public announcements.
Another key change affects the Dwarka Metro Station, which will now be called “Dwarka-Kakrola Metro Station” to better represent the surrounding locality and improve geographical identification for daily commuters.
Focus on Local Recognition and Historical Significance
The renaming exercise is not limited to Metro stations alone. Several roads, public facilities and infrastructure projects across Delhi have also received new names as part of the broader initiative.
Britannia Chowk in Shakurpur has been renamed “Ashwini Chopra (Minna) Chowk” in memory of senior journalist and former Member of Parliament Ashwini Chopra, recognising his contribution to public life and media.
Meanwhile, the under-construction sports complex in Begampur has been named “Atal Khel Parisar” in honour of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Delhi government has also approved the installation of Vajpayee’s statue at the upcoming sports facility.
In another major decision, the under-construction hospital in Jwalapuri will now be known as “Baba Ramdevji Maharaj Hospital,” adding to the list of public institutions renamed under the latest exercise.
Government Says Changes Will Improve Public Convenience
Officials said the renaming process is intended to make public infrastructure more relatable and easier to identify for commuters and residents. Linking Metro stations and landmarks with nearby hospitals, localities and notable figures is expected to improve wayfinding and strengthen public association with important civic spaces.
The government also believes the move will help preserve and highlight Delhi’s cultural and social heritage by recognising personalities who have contributed to politics, journalism and public service.
