Indian Equities Rebound After Three Sessions of Losses
Indian benchmark equity indices opened higher on Thursday, September 3, as easing concerns over a prolonged escalation in the Iran conflict improved investor sentiment. The recovery comes after the Sensex and Nifty50 had declined for three consecutive sessions amid concerns over elevated crude oil prices, global bond yields and geopolitical tensions.
At 10:00 AM, the BSE Sensex was up 309.77 points, or 0.40%, at 76,880.12, while the Nifty50 gained 86.45 points, or 0.36%, to 24,000.90.
The positive opening was supported by buying in banking, metal and select large-cap stocks, although weakness in information technology and FMCG shares limited the broader gains.
Overnight market sentiment also received some relief after US President Donald Trump played down the possibility of a prolonged conflict with Iran. However, elevated crude oil prices and uncertainty surrounding developments in West Asia remain important risks for global markets. Reuters reported that Indian equities were expected to stage a partial rebound after recent losses, although higher oil prices were likely to cap the upside.
Nifty Struggles Around the 24,000 Mark
The Nifty50 crossed the 24,000 level during morning trade after initially opening below the psychological mark. At 9:22 AM, the index had gained 63.25 points, or 0.26%, to trade at 23,982.75.
The ability of the index to sustain levels above 24,000 will remain important for market sentiment during the session. A sustained move above this level could encourage further buying in large-cap stocks, while failure to hold the mark could result in profit booking after the recent recovery.
The benchmark had closed at 23,914.45 on Wednesday, while GIFT Nifty futures had indicated a positive start for Thursday.
Banking Stocks Lead the Recovery
Banking stocks emerged among the strongest performers in early trade.
The Nifty PSU Bank index gained around 1.3%, making it the best-performing major sectoral index in the morning session. The Nifty Private Bank index and Nifty Metal index also advanced around 0.8% each.
Among the Nifty50 constituents, ICICI Bank, Adani Ports and Axis Bank were among the leading gainers.
The strength in banking stocks provided support to the benchmark indices and helped offset losses in technology and consumer-facing sectors.
Nifty IT Under Pressure
Information technology stocks remained under pressure despite the broader market recovery.
Nifty IT declined around 1%, with major technology companies including Infosys, TCS, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra among the notable laggards.
The IT sector has faced heightened volatility in recent sessions as investors assess global technology spending, currency movements, US economic conditions and the outlook for interest rates.
The weakness in heavyweight IT stocks is particularly significant for the Nifty50 because of the sector's substantial representation in the benchmark.
FMCG Stocks Also Trade Lower
The FMCG sector was another notable underperformer in morning trade.
Defensive consumer stocks have generally attracted investor interest during periods of market uncertainty, but Thursday's early decline indicates that buying interest was concentrated more heavily in banks, metals and selected cyclical stocks.
Market participants are likely to track whether the weakness in FMCG stocks intensifies or stabilises as the session progresses.
Mid-Cap and Small-Cap Stocks Remain Firm
The broader market continued to show relative strength.
At around 10:00 AM, the Nifty MidCap index was up 0.29%, while the Nifty SmallCap index gained 0.82%.
Earlier at the opening, the Nifty Midcap 100 had slipped 0.09%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 was up 0.65%, indicating that buying interest strengthened as the session progressed.
The relative outperformance of smaller stocks suggests that domestic investors remain willing to take selective exposure to broader-market companies despite the volatility in benchmark indices.
India VIX Falls Over 7%
Market volatility expectations eased sharply during the morning session.
The India VIX fell 7.25% to 10.75, signalling a decline in near-term volatility expectations among investors.
The fall in the volatility index is positive for market sentiment because it indicates that investors are pricing in lower immediate uncertainty. However, geopolitical developments and crude oil movements remain potential triggers for sudden changes in volatility.
Torrent Power Gains Over 6% After Rating Upgrade
Among individual stocks, Torrent Power emerged as one of the prominent gainers.
The stock jumped 6.29% to ₹1,327.40 on the NSE after Investec upgraded the stock to 'Buy' and raised its target price to ₹1,515, according to market reports.
The revised target represented approximately 14% potential upside from Wednesday's closing level.
The rating upgrade provided a fresh catalyst for the stock and attracted buying interest during early trade.
Clean Max Shares Jump After Large Trades
Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions also witnessed strong buying interest.
The stock climbed 8.06% to ₹1,359, touching the day's high on the NSE after around 1.6 million shares changed hands through two large trades at ₹1,220 per share, according to Bloomberg data cited in market reports.
The sharp movement highlights continued investor interest in companies operating in the renewable energy and clean-energy ecosystem.
Adani Ports, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank Among Top Gainers
At the opening, Adani Ports, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and SBI were among the stronger performers from the benchmark pack.
On the other side, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Infosys, TCS and IndiGo were among the notable losers.
The divergence between financial stocks and IT companies has been an important feature of the morning session, with investors rotating towards sectors that could benefit from domestic economic activity while remaining cautious on sectors exposed to global demand.
Global Cues Remain Critical
Despite Thursday's recovery, global markets continue to be influenced by geopolitical developments and commodity prices.
Crude oil remains a key concern for India because the country imports a significant portion of its energy requirements. Sustained increases in crude prices can raise India's import bill, put pressure on inflation and potentially affect corporate margins.
Higher global bond yields are another factor being monitored by equity investors because they can influence capital flows towards emerging markets and affect the relative attractiveness of equities.
Reuters noted that the recent three-session decline in Indian equities had been driven partly by rising crude prices and global bond yields as investors reassessed the outlook for interest rates remaining higher for longer.
Stocks to Watch During the Session
Torrent Power: Shares gained sharply following Investec's upgrade to Buy and higher target price.
Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions: The stock surged following large trades and remained among the strongest movers in the morning.
ICICI Bank: One of the leading contributors to the benchmark's early gains.
Adani Ports: Strong buying interest placed the stock among the top Nifty gainers.
Axis Bank: Banking-sector strength supported the stock during early trade.
Infosys and TCS: Both technology majors remained under pressure and weighed on the Nifty IT index.
Tech Mahindra and HCL Technologies: The stocks also traded lower, contributing to sectoral weakness.
Market Outlook
Thursday's recovery provides some relief after three consecutive sessions of losses, but the market remains sensitive to West Asia developments, crude oil prices, global bond yields and foreign fund flows.
The Nifty50's ability to sustain itself around the 24,000 level will be closely watched. Strong participation from banking and broader-market stocks could support the recovery, while renewed selling in IT heavyweights or a fresh spike in crude oil could restrict gains.
For the broader market, the continued strength of the MidCap and SmallCap indices is encouraging, while the sharp decline in India VIX indicates relatively lower immediate volatility expectations.
However, investors are likely to remain selective until there is greater clarity on geopolitical risks and their potential impact on energy prices and global monetary policy.
