The Sensex fell 400.47 points, or 0.52 per cent, to 76,864.04 by 10:00 AM, while the Nifty 50 declined 152.90 points, or 0.63 per cent, to 24,022.75.

Rising Crude Prices, Global Rate Concerns Trigger Selling Pressure

Indian benchmark indices came under renewed selling pressure on Monday as investors reacted to rising crude oil prices, weak global cues and concerns over the trajectory of US interest rates.

The Sensex fell 400.47 points, or 0.52 per cent, to 76,864.04 by 10:00 AM, while the Nifty 50 declined 152.90 points, or 0.63 per cent, to 24,022.75.

The decline intensified after a weak opening, with investors adopting a cautious stance across large-, mid- and small-cap stocks. Metal, IT, cement and media stocks were among the major sectoral laggards.

Nifty Opens Lower, Moves Towards 24,000

The Nifty 50 opened around 24,060.45, lower by nearly 115 points, before extending its decline during early trade.

The index subsequently moved close to the psychologically important 24,000 mark, making the level crucial for the market's near-term direction.

A sustained hold above 24,000 could provide some stability, while a decisive break below the level could increase selling pressure and trigger further profit booking.

The Sensex also remained under pressure around the 76,800-77,000 zone.

Broader Markets Underperform

Selling pressure was visible beyond the frontline indices.

The Nifty MidCap 100 declined around 0.92 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap 100 fell approximately 1.03 per cent by 10:00 AM.

The sharper decline in broader-market indices indicates that investors are reducing exposure to relatively higher-risk segments amid increased market volatility.

The weakness in mid- and small-cap stocks also resulted in a deterioration in market breadth, with declining stocks significantly outnumbering gainers.

Metal Stocks Lead Sectoral Decline

Metal stocks were among the biggest casualties during Monday's trading session.

The Nifty Metal index declined around 2 per cent, with Hindustan Zinc, Vedanta and Adani Enterprises among the major losers.

Hindalco Industries was also among the top Nifty 50 decliners.

The metal sector remains sensitive to global economic-growth expectations, commodity prices, Chinese demand and movements in energy costs. Any indication of weaker global industrial activity can put pressure on metal stocks.

IT Stocks Remain Weak

Information technology stocks also traded under pressure, with the Nifty IT index declining more than 1 per cent.

Infosys was among the prominent losers on the Nifty 50.

The IT sector remains closely linked to developments in the US economy, technology spending and global interest-rate expectations. Higher bond yields and concerns about economic growth can influence valuations of technology companies.

Investors will therefore continue to track US economic data and Federal Reserve commentary for further direction.

HDFC Bank Bucks the Trend

HDFC Bank was one of the strongest performers in the benchmark index, gaining around 2.5 per cent to ₹739.75 in early trade.

The buying interest followed confirmation that Sashidhar Jagdishan will not seek re-appointment as the bank's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

The stock's gains provided some support to the financial sector at a time when most other major sectors were trading in the red.

The Nifty Private Bank index was the only major sectoral index showing gains during the early session.

Sterlite Technologies Gains on Major Contract

Sterlite Technologies emerged as one of the notable individual gainers.

The company's shares climbed around 4.6 per cent to ₹757.70 after it announced a long-term contract worth $288 million with a leading hyperscaler.

The contract is significant because of the continued expansion of hyperscale data centres and the resulting demand for high-capacity optical connectivity infrastructure.

The development could strengthen investor interest in companies positioned to benefit from the growing data-centre and digital infrastructure ecosystem.

Geopolitical Tensions Keep Investors Cautious

Global geopolitical developments are another major source of uncertainty for financial markets.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei called for Muslim nations to unite against the United States and Israel, according to reports.

Any further escalation in West Asia could have implications for crude oil supplies and shipping routes, potentially increasing volatility across energy and currency markets.

For India, sustained geopolitical pressure could be particularly important because higher crude prices can increase the country's import bill and put pressure on the rupee.

Crude Oil Emerges as Key Market Driver

Oil prices remain one of the most important variables for Indian markets.

India imports a significant portion of its crude oil requirements. Therefore, a sustained increase in global oil prices could adversely affect the country's trade balance, current account and inflation outlook.

Higher energy costs can also increase operating expenses for industries such as aviation, transportation, chemicals, paints, tyres and manufacturing.

At the same time, lower crude prices could provide relief to import-dependent sectors and support the rupee.

Global Rate Outlook Remains in Focus

Investors are also assessing the possibility of changes in US monetary policy.

Expectations regarding the Federal Reserve's interest-rate path influence global bond yields, the US dollar and capital flows towards emerging markets.

If global yields remain elevated, foreign investors could become more selective about emerging-market assets.

For Indian equities, this makes upcoming US economic indicators and central-bank commentary particularly important.

Market Breadth Turns Negative

Market breadth remained weak during the early trading session.

Only four of the 30 Sensex constituents were trading in positive territory around 9:19 AM.

The broader weakness indicates that selling is not restricted to a handful of heavyweight stocks and is instead spread across multiple segments of the market.

A sustained improvement in market breadth would be required to indicate a stronger recovery in sentiment.

Investors Track Key Stocks and Corporate Developments

Apart from index movements, several company-specific developments are likely to influence trading activity.

HDFC Bank remained in focus following the management-related announcement, while Sterlite Technologies gained after securing its large hyperscaler contract.

Metal stocks including Hindustan Zinc, Vedanta, Hindalco and Adani Enterprises remained under pressure.

The market is also expected to track developments in banking, IT, infrastructure, energy and defence stocks as investors reassess valuations following recent market movements.

Key Levels to Watch

The Nifty 50's movement around 24,000 is likely to remain important during the trading session.

A sustained recovery above 24,200-24,250 could improve sentiment and encourage short-covering, while a decisive break below 24,000 may increase downside momentum.

For the Sensex, the 76,500-76,800 region could act as an important support zone, while 77,200-77,500 may remain an immediate resistance area.

The broader market could remain volatile if selling pressure continues in mid- and small-cap stocks.

Market Outlook

The market setup remains cautious to negative in the near term, with rising crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and global interest-rate concerns keeping investors defensive.

For the Nifty, 24,000 remains the key immediate psychological support. Holding this level could result in consolidation and a recovery attempt, while a decisive breach could lead to further downside towards lower support zones.

On the upside, 24,200-24,250 will be the first important hurdle, followed by the 24,400-24,500 region.

For the Sensex, 76,500-76,800 is likely to remain an important support zone, while 77,200-77,500 could act as the immediate resistance band.

Market participants should closely monitor crude oil prices, the rupee, foreign institutional flows, global equity markets and developments in West Asia. With volatility elevated, sector rotation and stock-specific action are likely to remain important drivers of the session.
