Indian equities trade cautiously after early gains as investors track crude oil, Iran-related developments and fresh IPO activity
Indian equity markets opened on a positive note on Monday, August 24, 2026, but quickly settled into a narrow trading range as investors remained cautious amid global geopolitical uncertainties and movements in crude oil prices. The benchmark indices were holding modest gains in morning trade, with buying visible in information technology and select large-cap stocks.
At around 10:00 AM, the Sensex was higher by 100.55 points, or 0.13 per cent, at 77,641.38, while the Nifty 50 gained 27.10 points, or 0.11 per cent, to trade at 24,279.10. The market had started on a firmer footing, with the Sensex briefly gaining nearly 200 points during the opening minutes.
The broader market also remained positive, although gains were relatively measured. The Nifty MidCap 100 index was up around 0.17 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap 100 index gained approximately 0.33 per cent in early trade.
IT stocks lead while pharma remains under pressure
Sectoral trends were mixed during the morning session. Information technology stocks emerged among the stronger performers, with Infosys and HCLTech featuring prominently among the leading Nifty gainers. Hindalco Industries was also among the stocks supporting the benchmark.
The Nifty IT index outperformed in early trade, indicating continued investor interest in technology companies despite the broader market's cautious tone. The media segment was another notable outperformer.
On the other hand, pharma and healthcare stocks remained under pressure, making the Nifty Pharma index one of the weaker sectoral performers.
The divergent sectoral performance suggests that investors are continuing to rotate towards selected sectors and stocks rather than taking broad-based positions across the market.
Twenty-one Sensex stocks trade in the green
Market breadth remained constructive in the opening phase. As many as 21 of the 30 Sensex constituents were trading higher, indicating that buying was spread across several large-cap counters.
Infosys, Tata Steel and HCLTech were among the notable gainers, while Asian Paints and Adani Ports witnessed mild declines.
The positive breadth, combined with gains in the mid- and small-cap segments, points to a relatively supportive domestic market structure even though headline indices remained confined to a narrow band.
Vishal Mega Mart jumps nearly 10%
Shares of Vishal Mega Mart emerged as one of the prominent movers in morning trade, climbing nearly 10 per cent to touch an intraday high of ₹113.70 on the NSE.
The sharp move followed a corporate governance-related development. The company's board approved the reappointment of Gunender Kapur as founder, director and chief executive officer for another five-year term beginning September 1, 2026.
The stock's strong response highlights the market's focus on management continuity and the company's future expansion plans.
Aurobindo Pharma slips after US FDA observations
Aurobindo Pharma came under pressure in early trading after the US Food and Drug Administration concluded an inspection of Lanett Company, the company's wholly owned US subsidiary.
The regulator issued four observations following the inspection. The company is expected to respond to the observations within the prescribed timeframe.
Aurobindo Pharma shares declined around 1 per cent during the morning session, with the regulatory development weighing on sentiment towards the stock.
Investors will now monitor the company's response and any subsequent regulatory developments, particularly given the importance of the US market to Indian pharmaceutical exporters.
Netweb Technologies scales a fresh high
Technology infrastructure company Netweb Technologies remained in focus after its shares touched a fresh record high during Monday's trading session.
The stock continued to attract buying interest amid strong investor attention towards India's high-performance computing, data-centre and artificial intelligence infrastructure theme. The broader technology-related optimism also helped maintain interest in companies linked to India's expanding digital infrastructure ecosystem.
The stock's movement comes at a time when investors are increasingly tracking businesses that could benefit from rising demand for data centres, AI computing capacity and specialised technology infrastructure.
IPO activity keeps primary market busy
The primary market remained active on Monday, with several issues opening for subscription.
Mainboard IPOs of Symbiotec Pharmalab, Skyways Air Services and Hy-Tech Engineers opened for subscription during the day. Investors will be closely watching subscription trends, valuations and the quality of institutional participation as the issues progress.
The SME segment also saw the opening of Madhur Knit and ABH Healthcare IPOs.
Meanwhile, Augmont Enterprises IPO entered its second day of bidding. The company is looking to raise approximately ₹825 crore through the issue.
Tempsens Instruments (India) entered the final day of its IPO subscription. The book-built issue has a size of approximately ₹650 crore, making the final-day subscription data particularly important for assessing investor demand.
Lalithaa Jewellery makes strong market debut
Shares of Lalithaa Jewellery made an impressive debut on the domestic exchanges.
The stock was listed at ₹265.30 on the BSE, representing a premium of roughly 32 per cent over its issue price. On the NSE, the shares debuted at around ₹265, translating into a premium of nearly 31.84 per cent.
The strong listing reflects robust investor appetite for the jewellery retail segment and healthy demand for the company's public issue.
Investors, however, will now shift their attention from the listing pop to the company's post-listing performance, earnings growth, valuations and execution prospects.
Horizon Industrial Parks makes muted debut
In contrast, Horizon Industrial Parks witnessed a subdued debut.
The stock listed at approximately ₹60.25 on the NSE, representing a modest premium of around 0.42 per cent over its issue price.
The muted listing indicates that investors remained selective despite the generally positive tone in the broader equity market. Post-listing trading activity and institutional participation will be important factors to watch in the coming sessions.
Global cues remain important for domestic markets
Global developments continue to influence investor sentiment. Crude oil prices remained an important market variable as traders assessed geopolitical developments surrounding Iran.
Investors are also awaiting greater clarity on Washington's proposed sanctions-related measures involving Iran. Any significant escalation could affect crude prices, inflation expectations and global risk appetite.
For India, movements in crude oil are particularly important because the country remains heavily dependent on imported energy. A sustained increase in oil prices could put pressure on inflation, the trade balance and the rupee, while softer crude prices could provide some relief to the domestic macroeconomic outlook.
What investors should watch today
The market's ability to sustain the early gains will depend on several factors. Traders will closely monitor the 24,300 zone on the Nifty, while the broader market trend could remain sensitive to global cues and institutional flows.
Key factors to watch during Monday's session include:
-
Movement in crude oil prices and developments involving Iran
-
FII and DII activity
-
Performance of IT, pharma and financial stocks
-
Mid-cap and small-cap market breadth
-
Subscription data for newly opened IPOs
-
Post-listing performance of Lalithaa Jewellery and Horizon Industrial Parks
-
Further corporate announcements and regulatory developments
-
Movement of the Indian rupee against the US dollar
Market Outlook
The Indian market began Monday on a mildly positive note, but the lack of strong follow-through buying indicates that investors remain cautious at higher levels. The Nifty's movement around the 24,300 mark could be important for determining the near-term direction.
A sustained move above this zone could improve sentiment and encourage fresh buying, while failure to hold early gains may lead to consolidation. With global geopolitical developments, crude oil prices and institutional flows remaining key variables, traders are likely to prefer stock-specific opportunities rather than aggressive broad-market positions.
The positive performance of IT stocks and select mid- and small-cap counters provides some support to market sentiment, but the weakness in pharma and healthcare highlights the importance of sector rotation.
For the remainder of the session, investors should watch whether the benchmarks can build on their early gains or slip back into consolidation.
