Defence Electronics Major Delivers Double-Digit Revenue Growth and Healthy Order Book, but Lower Margins Trigger Profit Booking; MOFSL Sees Nearly 30% Upside

Shares of Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) came under selling pressure on Tuesday after the Navratna defence public sector undertaking (PSU) reported its June quarter (Q1 FY27) earnings. While the company posted robust revenue growth and higher net profit, investors were disappointed by weaker-than-expected operating margins, resulting in the stock falling nearly 4% during early trade.

BEL opened lower at ₹406.15 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and declined to an intraday low of ₹392.50 before recovering slightly. Around 9:30 AM, the stock was trading near ₹393, down more than 3%, making it the biggest loser on both the Nifty 50 and the Sensex.

The sharp decline came despite healthy business growth, indicating that investors focused primarily on the company's profitability rather than its strong top-line performance.

Revenue Grows 25% as Defence Execution Remains Strong

BEL reported a 25.2% year-on-year increase in revenue from operations, which rose to ₹5,533.06 crore during the June quarter from ₹4,417 crore in the corresponding period last year.

The revenue growth reflects healthy execution across defence programmes, continued deliveries to the Indian Armed Forces and strong demand for indigenous defence electronics under the Government of India's defence modernisation initiatives.

The company has continued to strengthen its position across radar systems, missile electronics, communication equipment, electronic warfare systems and other strategic defence technologies.

Net Profit Rises, But Below Market Expectations

For the quarter ended June 2026, BEL reported a net profit of ₹1,048.33 crore, registering an increase of 8.17% from ₹969.13 crore reported in the same quarter last year.

Although profitability improved on a year-on-year basis, the earnings were slightly below market expectations as operating margins came under pressure.

The modest increase in profit, despite strong revenue growth, highlighted the impact of changing project execution mix and higher operating costs during the quarter.

Margin Contraction Becomes the Key Concern

The biggest disappointment in the quarterly results was BEL's operating margin performance.

The company reported:

  • EBITDA of approximately ₹1,390 crore, up around 12% year-on-year.

  • EBITDA margin of 25.1%, compared with approximately 28% in the previous year.

  • Gross margin declined sharply to 45.5%, from 53.2% in Q1 FY26.

Analysts noted that while the absolute EBITDA continued to grow, the decline in margins fell well short of market expectations and became the primary reason for the sharp correction in the stock price.

Management attributed the lower margins mainly to an adverse product mix, explaining that the projects executed during the quarter carried comparatively lower profitability.

Importantly, the company clarified that commodity price inflation did not materially impact margins, suggesting that the weakness was largely execution-related rather than structural.

Operating Expenses Rise with Project Execution

BEL's total expenses increased 30.5% year-on-year to ₹4,297.62 crore, driven mainly by higher material consumption associated with faster project execution.

As defence manufacturing projects progress, input costs naturally increase before revenues and profitability normalise over the execution cycle.

Management remains confident that margins will improve in the coming quarters as the execution mix shifts towards higher-margin projects.

Order Book Remains a Major Strength

Despite the quarterly margin miss, BEL continues to possess one of the strongest order books in India's defence sector.

As of July 1, 2026, the company reported:

  • Order book worth ₹72,258 crore

  • Fresh order inflows of approximately ₹4,000 crore during Q1 FY27

The sizeable order pipeline provides excellent earnings visibility over the next several years and reinforces BEL's strategic importance within India's defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The company's diversified portfolio across defence electronics also reduces dependence on any single project or customer.

Management Reaffirms FY27 Guidance

One of the biggest positives from the earnings announcement was management's decision to maintain its full-year guidance despite the softer margin performance.

BEL continues to expect:

  • Revenue growth of more than 15% in FY27.

  • EBITDA margin of around 28%.

  • New order inflows of approximately ₹55,000 crore during FY27.

The company remains optimistic that upcoming defence contracts and an improved execution mix will support stronger profitability during the remainder of the financial year.

Motilal Oswal Raises Target Price

Following the quarterly results, Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL) maintained its 'Buy' recommendation on BEL.

The brokerage also increased its target price to ₹530 from ₹510, implying a potential upside of nearly 30% from the previous closing price.

According to MOFSL:

  • Revenue remained broadly healthy.

  • EBITDA and net profit came in marginally below estimates.

  • Margin weakness was primarily due to project mix.

  • Long-term business fundamentals remain unchanged.

The brokerage believes the current correction presents an attractive opportunity for long-term investors.

Large Defence Orders Expected to Drive Future Growth

Analysts continue to remain optimistic because several major defence procurement programmes are expected to be awarded over the next few quarters.

BEL is considered one of the leading contenders for projects involving:

  • Air defence systems.

  • Radar platforms.

  • Electronic warfare equipment.

  • Naval electronics.

  • Advanced communication systems.

Among the most anticipated projects is the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) programme, estimated to be worth nearly ₹30,000 crore.

Brokerages expect this project to be awarded during the second quarter of FY27, potentially providing a significant boost to BEL's already strong order pipeline.

Structural Growth Story Remains Intact

The long-term investment case for BEL continues to be supported by several favourable industry trends:

  • Rising defence capital expenditure by the Government of India.

  • Greater emphasis on indigenous defence manufacturing under the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.

  • Increasing localisation of sophisticated defence technologies.

  • Strong export opportunities for Indian defence manufacturers.

  • Growing demand for surveillance, missile systems and electronic warfare capabilities.

These structural drivers position BEL to remain one of the biggest beneficiaries of India's expanding defence sector over the coming decade.

Why Did the Market React Negatively?

The sharp decline in BEL shares illustrates the market's sensitivity to operating profitability during earnings season.

Despite reporting:

  • Strong revenue growth.

  • Higher net profit.

  • Robust order inflows.

  • Positive management guidance.

  • Healthy long-term demand.

the weaker-than-expected EBITDA margin overshadowed the positives and prompted investors to book profits.

Given the stock's strong performance over recent months, even a modest earnings disappointment was enough to trigger a sharp short-term correction.

Should Investors Buy, Sell or Hold?

Most brokerage houses continue to maintain a positive long-term view on BEL.

The company's:

  • Record order book.

  • Strong balance sheet.

  • Consistent execution.

  • Government policy support.

  • Long-term earnings visibility.

continue to justify a constructive outlook despite temporary margin pressure.

Long-term investors may view the recent correction as an opportunity to accumulate the stock, while short-term traders are likely to monitor upcoming order announcements and margin recovery before taking fresh positions.

Market Outlook

BEL's June quarter performance highlights the distinction between short-term operational challenges and long-term business strength. While lower operating margins triggered immediate market disappointment, the company's strong revenue growth, expanding order book and reaffirmed FY27 guidance demonstrate that the underlying business remains fundamentally healthy.

With India's defence budget continuing to rise and several large procurement programmes expected over the next few quarters, BEL remains well-positioned to benefit from the country's defence modernisation strategy. If margins recover as management expects and major projects such as the QRSAM contract are secured, investor confidence could strengthen further, supporting sustained earnings growth and long-term value creation.
