Valuation re-rating has driven a sharp divergence between the two gold-financing stocks, while analysts flag competition, margin pressure and gold-price volatility as key risks
Shares of major gold-financing companies Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance have followed markedly different paths during FY27 so far. While Muthoot Finance has gained around 2.3 per cent, Manappuram Finance has delivered a much stronger 51 per cent rise, according to NSE data.
Analysts believe the gap is largely a result of changing valuation multiples, differences in investor expectations and improving sentiment toward Manappuram's diversified business.
Valuation Re-rating Explains the Wide Performance Gap
Sunny Agrawal, Head of Fundamental Research at SBI Securities, said the contrasting stock performance has primarily been driven by a change in valuation.
Muthoot Finance has witnessed a significant de-rating in its one-year price-to-book valuation. Its multiple declined from approximately 4.6 times in January 2026 to 2.8 times currently.
The decline in valuation has been linked to expectations of margin normalisation, relatively stable gold prices and concerns over increasing competition in the gold-financing space.
Manappuram Finance, in contrast, has experienced a re-rating. Its price-to-book multiple increased from around 1.4 times in April 2026 to 1.9 times currently.
Analysts attribute the improvement to greater clarity around management strategy, stable margins and signs of recovery in the company's microfinance business.
Manappuram Benefits From Improving Business Mix
One of the important changes at Manappuram Finance has been the rationalisation of asset yields.
The company reduced asset yields from the 21-22 per cent range to around 17-18 per cent, bringing them closer to industry peers. Although this weighed on the company's stock performance during FY26, the strategy has helped improve the quality and sustainability of the business, according to analysts.
The improvement in the microfinance business has also contributed to the positive investor perception, providing an additional earnings driver alongside the company's gold-loan operations.
Muthoot Finance Shows Signs of a Technical Recovery
Muthoot Finance may have lagged Manappuram Finance during FY27, but the stock has recently displayed stronger technical momentum.
The shares have risen nearly 13 per cent over four trading sessions and are testing the 100-day moving average near ₹3,189.
According to Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, Muthoot Finance has broken out of a downward-sloping trendline on both daily and weekly charts.
The breakout on the daily timeframe has been accompanied by higher volumes, suggesting stronger buying participation.
Momentum indicators have also improved, with the RSI moving higher and the positive directional indicator crossing above the negative directional indicator. Rising green histogram bars on the MACD are further supporting the bullish setup.
₹3,000-3,020 Zone Crucial for Muthoot
The ₹3,000-3,020 range is emerging as an important support zone for Muthoot Finance.
The area coincides with the stock's 50-day exponential moving average. According to the technical view, the recent recovery could extend provided the stock continues to hold above this region.
A sustained move above the 100-DMA could further improve the technical structure and potentially attract additional buying interest.
Manappuram Remains in a Stronger Long-Term Technical Structure
Manappuram Finance has already delivered a substantial rally and remains comfortably above its long-term moving averages.
The stock is trading above its 200-day moving average of around ₹297, highlighting the strength of its longer-term trend.
However, the counter recently witnessed a correction of nearly 9 per cent after touching its 50-day EMA on August 19.
Despite the pullback, analysts noted that the decline was accompanied by healthy volumes and that the broader technical setup remains constructive.
₹340-345 Support Zone in Focus
The ₹340-345 range, corresponding to Manappuram's 50-day EMA, is likely to remain an important near-term support zone.
The stock's RSI has improved from around 41 to 61, indicating a revival in momentum. The MACD is also approaching a bullish crossover, while shrinking red histogram bars suggest that selling pressure is weakening.
A sustained hold above ₹340-345 could keep the broader uptrend intact.
Gold Prices Remain a Critical Variable
The outlook for both companies remains closely linked to the trajectory of gold prices.
Higher gold prices increase the value of pledged collateral and can support borrowing capacity for customers. This can potentially benefit gold-loan growth.
However, sharp fluctuations in gold prices can create volatility in loan demand, collateral values and lender margins.
The ability of gold-finance companies to manage loan-to-value ratios, credit quality and customer retention will therefore remain important.
Competition Could Pressure Margins
The increasing presence of banks, NBFCs and other financial players in secured lending is another factor investors need to monitor.
Greater competition can result in lower lending yields, higher customer acquisition expenses and pressure on margins.
For established gold financiers, maintaining branch productivity, controlling operating costs and retaining customers will become increasingly important as competitors expand their presence.
Analysts Remain Cautious on Pure-Play Gold Lenders
Despite the significant rally in Manappuram Finance and the recent technical recovery in Muthoot Finance, SBI Securities believes the risk-reward profile of pure-play gold lenders is not particularly attractive at current valuations.
The major concerns include increasing competition, potential margin pressure and gold-price volatility.
At the same time, there are potential positive triggers. Better-than-expected execution, stronger gold-loan growth and a further rise in gold prices could improve earnings expectations and support valuations.

What Investors Should Watch Next
The next phase of performance for both stocks is likely to depend on whether earnings growth can justify their current valuations.
For Muthoot Finance, investors will be watching whether the recent technical breakout develops into a sustained recovery and whether margins remain resilient despite competitive pressure.
For Manappuram Finance, the key question is whether the substantial re-rating can be supported by continued improvement in its microfinance operations and stable profitability.
Gold prices, loan growth, asset quality, margins and competitive intensity will remain the key operating indicators for both companies.
The contrasting FY27 performance shows that stock returns are not determined only by business growth; changes in valuation expectations can be equally important. While Manappuram has benefited from a sharp re-rating, Muthoot's recent technical improvement could mark a change in sentiment—but sustaining the recovery will require stronger fundamental support.
