India's equity markets have entered a prolonged consolidation phase, with benchmark indices struggling to break out of a narrow trading range amid mixed corporate earnings, geopolitical uncertainties and fluctuating global commodity prices.

Nifty Remains in Consolidation Mode as Investors Await a Breakout; Pharma and Healthcare Offer the Strongest Combination of Technical Strength and Fundamental Growth

India's equity markets have entered a prolonged consolidation phase, with benchmark indices struggling to break out of a narrow trading range amid mixed corporate earnings, geopolitical uncertainties and fluctuating global commodity prices. While the broader market has lacked clear direction over the past several weeks, sector-specific opportunities continue to emerge.

According to Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President – Research at Religare Broking, investors should maintain a stock-specific approach in the current market environment. He believes the pharmaceutical and healthcare sector is likely to outperform during the second half of calendar year 2026, while banking and defence stocks should be approached selectively based on earnings visibility, valuations and execution capabilities.

Mishra also believes the next major move in the Nifty will depend on whether the index can successfully break above its current resistance zone or loses a critical support level.

Nifty Stuck in a Six-Week Consolidation Range

The Nifty 50 has spent nearly six weeks moving within a narrow band, reflecting investor caution despite resilient domestic fundamentals. According to Mishra, the market continues to build a base after failing to sustain above its long-term moving average.

From a technical standpoint, the index is holding above an important upward trendline that has supported the market since the lows recorded in April and June.

Important Technical Levels

Level Significance
23,600 Major trend support
24,400–24,600 Key breakout resistance
25,600 Initial upside target after breakout
Above 25,600 Possibility of fresh lifetime highs

Mishra warns that a decisive fall below 23,600 could weaken the ongoing recovery and increase the probability of the index correcting towards 23,000.

Conversely, a sustained breakout above 24,600 could signal the beginning of a fresh medium-term rally and eventually lead the benchmark to new record highs.

IT Sector Recovery Improving, But Confirmation Still Needed

Technology stocks have staged a noticeable recovery after facing heavy selling pressure earlier this year.

The Nifty IT Index has successfully defended the 26,000 support zone and witnessed renewed buying interest. However, Mishra believes investors should avoid assuming that a full-fledged bullish reversal has already begun.

According to him, the sector still needs to:

  • Cross 29,800 decisively.

  • Form a higher high–higher low structure.

  • Sustain above 32,000.

Until these conditions are met, the recent rise should be viewed as a technical rebound rather than a confirmed long-term trend reversal.

Banking Sector Requires Careful Stock Selection

The first-quarter earnings season has once again highlighted the divergence within India's banking sector.

While several large private sector banks disappointed investors with weaker margins and muted earnings growth, a few lenders continued to demonstrate operational strength.

Banks Showing Relative Strength

  • ICICI Bank

  • Federal Bank

Banks Facing Pressure

  • HDFC Bank

  • Axis Bank

  • Kotak Mahindra Bank

  • IndusInd Bank

According to Mishra, investors should avoid taking blanket exposure to the banking sector.

Instead, emphasis should be placed on institutions that continue to deliver:

  • Consistent loan growth.

  • Stable asset quality.

  • Healthy return ratios.

  • Strong deposit franchise.

  • Sustainable earnings visibility.

Selective accumulation in fundamentally stronger banks could provide better risk-adjusted returns over the medium term.

Oil Marketing Companies Still Face Global Headwinds

The outlook for Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) remains closely linked to global crude oil prices.

Recent geopolitical tensions have resulted in significant volatility in Brent crude, creating uncertainty around refining and marketing margins.

Mishra believes investors should wait for:

  • Stable crude prices.

  • Improved marketing margins.

  • Greater geopolitical clarity.

before considering fresh investments in the sector.

A sustained decline in oil prices would improve profitability for OMCs and create a more favourable investment environment.

Defence Sector Growth Story Remains Intact

India's defence sector continues to benefit from powerful structural drivers despite the sharp rally witnessed over the past two years.

Government initiatives promoting self-reliance in defence manufacturing, rising exports and a healthy order pipeline continue to support long-term earnings visibility.

Preferred Defence Stocks

  • Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL)

  • Bharat Forge

  • Data Patterns

  • Solar Industries

However, Mishra cautions that valuations across the sector have become demanding.

Investors should therefore prioritise companies with:

  • Large executable order books.

  • Strong project execution.

  • Healthy balance sheets.

  • Sustainable earnings growth.

  • Attractive valuation relative to growth prospects.

Pharma Emerges as the Strongest Sectoral Bet

Among all major sectors, pharmaceuticals and healthcare stand out as Mishra's preferred investment theme for the remainder of 2026.

The sector has consistently demonstrated improving relative strength compared to the broader market, while institutional buying has remained steady across both large-cap and mid-cap healthcare companies.

Why Pharma Looks Attractive

Technical Factors

  • Strong relative strength.

  • Positive chart formations.

  • Higher trading volumes.

  • Consistent institutional accumulation.

  • Improving momentum indicators.

Fundamental Drivers

  • Healthy export demand.

  • Stabilising pricing environment in the US market.

  • Growing domestic healthcare expenditure.

  • Expansion of speciality drug portfolios.

  • Robust product pipelines.

  • Increasing demand for preventive healthcare.

The sector's combination of defensive earnings and structural growth makes it particularly attractive during periods of market uncertainty.

Market Leadership Continues to Shift

The current market cycle is increasingly being driven by sector rotation rather than broad-based participation.

Investors are rewarding companies with:

  • Predictable earnings.

  • Strong cash generation.

  • Low leverage.

  • Healthy balance sheets.

  • High return ratios.

Healthcare, diagnostics and select pharmaceutical companies have emerged as key beneficiaries of this shift.

Risks That Could Influence Market Direction

Despite the constructive medium-term outlook, investors should continue monitoring several global and domestic factors.

Key Risk Factors

  • Geopolitical developments.

  • Crude oil price volatility.

  • Global interest rate outlook.

  • US economic growth.

  • Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) flows.

  • RBI monetary policy decisions.

  • Inflation trajectory.

  • Corporate earnings momentum.

Any significant change in these variables could alter market sentiment over the coming months.

Investment Strategy for H2 CY2026

Given the ongoing consolidation in benchmark indices, Mishra recommends a disciplined investment approach rather than aggressive positioning.

Preferred Strategy

  • Accumulate quality pharmaceutical and healthcare stocks on market declines.

  • Remain selective within private banking.

  • Focus on fundamentally strong defence companies despite elevated valuations.

  • Avoid aggressive exposure to oil marketing companies until crude prices stabilise.

  • Continue monitoring Nifty's crucial breakout levels before increasing market exposure.
