Sensex Slips Below 77,650 While Nifty Holds Above 24,200; Broader Markets Outperform Amid Strong Mid- and Small-Cap Buying

Indian equity markets witnessed a cautious start to Tuesday's trading session as investors remained on the sidelines due to persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. While benchmark indices traded with a negative bias, broader markets continued to outperform, indicating that investors are selectively accumulating quality mid- and small-cap stocks despite global uncertainty.

At 10:00 AM, the BSE Sensex was trading 88.43 points lower at 77,620.09, while the Nifty 50 slipped 6.10 points to 24,232.40. The benchmark indices remained largely range-bound as participants awaited fresh triggers from the ongoing corporate earnings season and developments related to US-Iran diplomatic talks.

Broader Markets Display Resilience

Unlike the benchmark indices, the broader market maintained a positive tone throughout the morning session. The Nifty MidCap Index gained 0.17%, while the Nifty SmallCap Index advanced 0.34%, highlighting continued investor confidence in companies beyond the large-cap universe.

The steady performance in broader markets suggests that domestic institutional investors remain active buyers, helping offset cautious sentiment in frontline stocks. Market participants continue to favour fundamentally strong companies with earnings visibility, particularly in sectors benefiting from domestic demand.

Pharma and Auto Stocks Drag Benchmarks Lower

Selling pressure in heavyweight pharmaceutical and automobile stocks weighed on benchmark indices. HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki India, and Eternal emerged among the biggest losers on the Nifty50, restricting any meaningful upside in the market.

The weakness in pharma stocks came after a recent rally, with investors booking profits ahead of key quarterly earnings announcements. Auto stocks also remained under pressure as investors assessed demand trends and awaited results from major automobile manufacturers scheduled later in the day.

Cement Sector Emerges as the Top Performer

The Nifty Cement Index outperformed all sectoral indices, rising nearly 1% during early trade. Buying momentum was led by Nuvoco Vistas Corporation, JK Cement, and Prism Johnson, while UltraTech Cement also gained more than 1% following its quarterly earnings announcement.

UltraTech Cement reported an in-line set of first-quarter results, supported by healthy volume growth, improved capacity utilisation and better realisations. Brokerage firms maintained a constructive outlook on the company, with several analysts seeing further upside supported by continued infrastructure spending and robust housing demand.

Apart from cement, metal and PSU banking stocks also attracted buying interest, reflecting optimism around domestic economic activity.

Global Markets Support Sentiment Despite Geopolitical Risks

Asian equity markets traded higher after crude oil prices eased from recent highs on expectations that diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran could reduce tensions in the Middle East. Investors welcomed reports suggesting that negotiations may resume if mutually acceptable conditions are achieved.

The decline in crude oil prices helped improve overall market sentiment, as lower energy prices could ease inflationary pressures globally. However, investors remained cautious as geopolitical developments continue to influence risk appetite across financial markets.

Global investors are also closely monitoring the ongoing corporate earnings season, particularly technology companies, to assess whether strong earnings can support equity valuations amid macroeconomic uncertainty.

Gold and Silver Gain on Safe-Haven Demand

In the commodities market, gold and silver prices moved higher during the session. Precious metals were supported by short covering and renewed safe-haven buying as investors continued to monitor geopolitical developments.

While easing oil prices improved overall market sentiment, uncertainty surrounding international diplomacy encouraged investors to maintain exposure to defensive assets such as gold and silver.

Q1 Earnings Season Gains Momentum

The June quarter earnings season remained the primary focus for investors, with several prominent companies scheduled to announce their financial results during the day. Market participants will closely track management commentary on demand trends, margins, capital expenditure and future growth guidance.

Key companies reporting results include:

  • Bajaj Auto

  • Indian Hotels Company

  • Adani Energy Solutions

  • Adani Total Gas

  • Bandhan Bank

  • JSW Infrastructure

  • TVS Motor Company

  • Granules India

  • IndiaMART InterMESH

  • Mastek

  • MedPlus Health Services

  • Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services

  • CRISIL

  • Trident

  • NIIT

  • Aavas Financiers

The earnings announcements are expected to influence stock-specific movements throughout the trading session.

Primary Market Activity Remains Strong

Activity in the primary market also remained healthy.

Metalic Technoforge IPO opened for subscription today with an issue size of ₹49.96 crore, targeting investors in the SME segment.

Meanwhile, Gulf Lloyds IPO entered its second day of subscription, while Caliber Mining IPO moved into its final day of bidding.

On the listing front, Millworks Technologies debuted on the stock exchanges after receiving an overwhelming 219.54-times subscription, reflecting continued investor appetite for quality SME offerings.

Market Outlook

Indian markets are expected to remain range-bound during the remainder of the session as investors balance encouraging domestic earnings with uncertainty surrounding global geopolitical developments. Stock-specific action is likely to dominate trading, particularly in companies reporting quarterly results.

The resilience of broader markets, coupled with strength in sectors such as cement, metals and PSU banks, indicates that underlying domestic sentiment remains constructive. However, movements in crude oil prices, developments in US-Iran negotiations and global market cues will continue to play a crucial role in determining the near-term direction of Indian equities.
