Strong Q1 earnings optimism, heavyweight buying and resilient domestic sentiment help Indian equities outperform weak global markets despite rising geopolitical tensions

Indian equity markets staged a robust rally on Friday, with benchmark indices climbing close to 1% during morning trade as investors cheered strong corporate earnings and heavy buying in large-cap stocks. The BSE Sensex surged more than 700 points to hit an intraday high of around 77,945, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced nearly 200 points to trade close to the 24,300 mark. The gains came despite weakness across several Asian markets, highlighting the resilience of domestic investor sentiment and continued interest in India's growth story.

The rally was primarily driven by heavyweight stocks in the energy, banking and information technology sectors. Reliance Industries emerged as one of the biggest contributors, rising around 2% ahead of its June quarter earnings announcement later in the day. Investors remained optimistic about the company's retail, telecom and energy businesses, which are expected to support overall earnings despite global economic uncertainties.

IT Stocks Lead the Charge

Technology stocks witnessed strong buying interest following the latest quarterly earnings announcements. Infosys, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) were among the top gainers on the Sensex, with gains of up to 3%. Positive management commentary from Tech Mahindra lifted sentiment across the sector, even as investors digested mixed earnings from Wipro.

Wipro, however, bucked the positive trend and declined nearly 2.5% after reporting June quarter results that fell short of market expectations. The weak performance highlighted the continued challenges facing parts of the global IT services industry, including slower client spending and cautious discretionary technology budgets.

Banking and Financial Stocks Add Strength

Financial stocks played a crucial role in lifting benchmark indices. HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finance and Bajaj Finserv recorded healthy gains as investors accumulated high-quality banking and NBFC counters ahead of the earnings season. Strong domestic credit growth expectations and stable asset quality continued to support the sector.

Jio Financial Services also attracted significant investor interest, rallying nearly 6% after announcing its quarterly financial results. The stock emerged as one of the top performers in early trade, reflecting confidence in the company's expanding financial services business.

Broader Markets Underperform Large Caps

While frontline indices traded firmly in positive territory, broader markets witnessed a relatively muted session. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices traded marginally lower during the opening hours, indicating that investor participation remained concentrated in large-cap companies.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty IT emerged as the best-performing index, followed by Financial Services and Auto. On the other hand, defensive sectors such as FMCG and Pharmaceuticals remained under pressure, with both indices slipping modestly.

BHEL Hits Fresh Lifetime High

Shares of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) continued their remarkable uptrend, touching a fresh all-time high during intraday trade. The stock has rallied sharply in recent months, supported by a strong order book, improving execution and robust quarterly performance. Market participants remain optimistic about the company's long-term growth prospects as India's infrastructure and power sectors continue to witness increased capital expenditure.

Crude Oil Climbs Amid Middle East Tensions

Global commodity markets remained in focus as crude oil prices moved higher amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Brent crude traded around $85.34 per barrel, gaining more than 1% after reports of continued US airstrikes targeting strategic infrastructure and renewed concerns over disruptions to shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz. Any prolonged supply disruption could keep energy prices elevated and influence inflation expectations worldwide.

Gold and Silver Edge Higher

Precious metals also traded with a positive bias as investors sought safe-haven assets. Spot gold rose to around $3,989 per ounce, while spot silver gained modestly to approximately $55.6 per ounce. The rise reflected ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and expectations that central banks could maintain a cautious approach toward monetary policy.

Key Stocks in Focus

Apart from Reliance Industries, major gainers included Infosys, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Mahindra & Mahindra and Hindustan Unilever. On the downside, Wipro remained under pressure following its earnings, while select FMCG and pharmaceutical stocks traded in negative territory.

Market Outlook

The market's strong performance underscores investors' confidence in India's economic fundamentals despite an uncertain global backdrop. The ongoing corporate earnings season will remain the primary catalyst for market direction over the coming weeks, with results from large-cap companies expected to determine sector-specific trends.

Investors will also closely monitor developments in global crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, foreign institutional investor activity and upcoming macroeconomic data releases. If corporate earnings continue to meet or exceed expectations, benchmark indices could maintain their positive momentum, although elevated global volatility may lead to intermittent bouts of profit booking.

The day's trading once again demonstrated that domestic markets continue to attract buying interest in fundamentally strong companies, reinforcing India's position as one of the more resilient equity markets amid challenging global conditions.
