Adani Green Energy, Adani Ports and Adani Power lead recovery after sharp index-rebalancing-driven correction

Shares of Adani Group companies recovered sharply in Tuesday’s intraday trade after suffering a steep sell-off in the previous session following the latest MSCI index rebalancing.

The rebound was led by Adani Green Energy, which gained as much as 4.69 per cent during the session. Adani Ports and Adani Power advanced up to 3.2 per cent each, while Adani Enterprises gained as much as 2.5 per cent. Adani Energy Solutions also traded higher, rising around 2 per cent at its intraday peak.

The recovery came after heavy institutional selling during Monday’s closing auction resulted in sharp price movements across several Adani Group stocks.

Market participants said the latest gains were largely driven by the easing of one-time MSCI-related selling pressure, bargain buying and an improvement in broader market sentiment rather than any major change in the companies’ fundamentals.

Why did Adani Group stocks fall sharply?

The previous session’s correction was primarily linked to institutional portfolio adjustments following the MSCI index rebalancing.

MSCI index changes require passive funds and other benchmark-tracking investors to adjust their holdings according to revised index weights. Such transactions can generate unusually large buying or selling volumes, particularly when several stocks are affected simultaneously.

The impact was particularly visible during the closing auction, when large institutional orders resulted in sharp price movements in some Adani Group stocks.

Market expert Arun Kejriwal said the MSCI rebalancing was known in advance and had allowed investors to position themselves ahead of the adjustment. However, the magnitude of the price movement during the final 30 minutes of Monday’s session surprised some market participants.

Tuesday’s rebound follows completion of rebalancing

With the MSCI-related portfolio adjustments largely completed, the immediate selling pressure has eased.

Ravi Singh, chief research officer at Master Capital Services, said Adani Group stocks were recovering after the sharp correction triggered by the MSCI rebalancing.

According to the market view, the rebound should primarily be interpreted as a recovery from flow-driven selling rather than evidence of a significant change in the fundamental outlook of the companies.

This distinction is important because index-related selling can temporarily push stock prices significantly away from levels determined by regular market demand and supply.

Adani Green Energy leads the recovery

Adani Green Energy emerged as the biggest gainer among the major Adani Group stocks.

The stock climbed as much as 4.69 per cent intraday and touched ₹1,271.20. It later moderated from the day's high.

The renewable energy company remains one of the key businesses within the group's long-term infrastructure and energy strategy. Its valuation and stock performance remain sensitive to renewable capacity additions, project execution, financing costs and expectations for India's clean-energy transition.

Despite Tuesday’s recovery, the stock remains below its 52-week high of ₹1,631.50, highlighting the volatility it has experienced over the broader period.

Adani Ports sees buying interest

Adani Ports also recovered strongly, gaining as much as 3.2 per cent during Tuesday’s trade.

The company is one of the group's major infrastructure businesses and provides investors with exposure to India's growing trade, ports and logistics ecosystem.

The stock’s recovery after the MSCI-related sell-off suggests that investors were willing to step in after the sharp correction.

However, the sustainability of the rebound will depend on whether buying interest continues after the one-time index-related flows disappear.

Adani Power rebounds after heavy selling

Adani Power advanced as much as 3.2 per cent during the session.

The power-generation business remains exposed to trends in electricity demand, power tariffs, generation capacity, fuel costs and regulatory developments.

Like other group stocks, the recent movement highlights how institutional flows can temporarily overshadow company-specific fundamentals.

Investors therefore need to assess the company's earnings trajectory and financial position separately from the broader movement in Adani Group shares.

Adani Enterprises also recovers

Adani Enterprises gained up to 2.5 per cent after coming under heavy selling pressure during Monday's session.

As the group's diversified business platform, the company has exposure to multiple sectors and growth opportunities. Its stock can therefore also act as a broader indicator of investor sentiment toward the Adani Group.

The latest recovery, however, does not by itself signal a fundamental turnaround. Investors will need to track earnings, project execution, capital allocation and debt levels to determine whether the recovery can extend.

Why did stocks rebound despite no major fundamental trigger?

Analysts believe the sharp two-way movement over the past two sessions is largely explained by institutional flows.

Arun Kejriwal pointed out that when Monday’s losses and Tuesday’s gains are viewed together, the overall change in prices is considerably smaller than the individual daily moves suggest.

The initial fall was largely driven by institutional selling linked to the MSCI adjustment, while the subsequent recovery was supported by the removal of that selling pressure and bargain buying.

This means Tuesday's rally should not automatically be interpreted as a fresh fundamental re-rating of Adani Group companies.

Bargain buying adds momentum

The steep decline in several Adani stocks during the previous session created room for short-term traders and domestic investors to enter at lower prices.

Ravi Singh said the 7–10 per cent fall in some group stocks attracted value buying following the sharp correction.

Such buying can provide immediate support to stocks, particularly when the initial trigger for the decline is technical or flow-related.

However, investors should remain cautious about chasing a stock immediately after a sharp rebound, particularly when volatility remains elevated.

MSCI rebalancing highlights importance of passive flows

The latest episode also underlines the increasing influence of passive investment flows on Indian equities.

Global index providers such as MSCI periodically review and rebalance their indices. Changes in stock weightages can result in significant portfolio adjustments by index funds and exchange-traded funds.

For stocks with substantial index representation, these adjustments can generate very large volumes within a short period.

This can create temporary price distortions, particularly during closing-auction sessions when large institutional orders are executed.

Estimated passive flows remain significant

According to Vipin Kumar, AVP Research at Globe Capital Market, the August 2026 MSCI index rebalancing was projected to generate total net passive inflows of approximately $617 million into the targeted Adani Group companies.

While the rebalancing can create short-term volatility, passive flows can also become a source of support once selling pressure has passed and stocks begin to normalise.

The actual price response, however, depends on broader market conditions, investor positioning and the size of active institutional flows.

Analysts prefer select Adani Group stocks

Despite the recent volatility, some analysts remain constructive on selected companies within the group.

Vipin Kumar suggested that traders could consider accumulating select Adani Group stocks in a staggered manner near their respective support levels.

His preferred names within the group are Adani Ports, Adani Green Energy and Adani Power.

The emphasis on staggered accumulation reflects the continuing volatility and the possibility of further short-term price fluctuations.

What investors should monitor next

Institutional flows

The direction of FII and domestic institutional flows will remain important after the MSCI-related transactions are absorbed.

Technical support levels

Following the sharp correction and subsequent rebound, traders are likely to monitor important support and resistance zones closely.

Earnings performance

Sustained gains will ultimately require improving earnings and cash flows rather than only index-related buying.

Debt and capital expenditure

Investors should track borrowing levels, capital expenditure requirements and the ability of individual companies to generate sufficient operating cash flows.

Project execution

For infrastructure, renewable energy and power businesses, timely execution of projects remains a major determinant of future earnings.

Global risk sentiment

Crude oil prices, US interest-rate expectations, geopolitical developments and emerging-market fund flows could continue to influence the broader market and Adani stocks.

Investors should separate group sentiment from company fundamentals

One of the key lessons from the recent volatility is that all Adani Group stocks should not be treated as a single investment proposition.

Adani Green Energy, Adani Ports, Adani Power, Adani Enterprises and Adani Energy Solutions operate in different businesses and face different financial and operating risks.

Therefore, investors should assess each company independently based on valuation, earnings visibility, leverage, cash flows, growth prospects and execution capability.

The sharp movement triggered by the MSCI rebalancing demonstrates that stock prices can move substantially in the short term because of portfolio flows, even without a corresponding change in business fundamentals.

Market Outlook

The near-term outlook for Adani Group stocks is likely to remain volatile but more balanced after the completion of the MSCI-related portfolio adjustments.

Tuesday’s recovery appears to have been driven mainly by the easing of institutional selling, bargain buying and improving market sentiment, rather than a major fundamental trigger.

If institutional flows stabilise and broader market conditions remain supportive, selected Adani stocks could see further recovery. However, investors should watch whether the rebound is sustained over the next few sessions instead of relying solely on a single-day recovery.

For traders, technical levels and institutional flows are likely to remain key short-term indicators. For long-term investors, the focus should remain on earnings growth, leverage, cash generation, capital allocation and project execution.

Analysts have identified Adani Ports, Adani Green Energy and Adani Power as preferred names, but staggered buying and company-specific fundamental analysis remain important after the recent sharp price swings.
