Benchmark indices remain under pressure in Wednesday’s session, with the Sensex falling over 300 points and Nifty slipping below 24,100 as weak global cues, rising bond yields and sectoral profit booking keep investors cautious.

Indian equity markets remained under pressure on Wednesday, August 19, as weak global sentiment, elevated bond yields and geopolitical uncertainty weighed on investor confidence. Both benchmark indices traded in a narrow negative range, while investors remained selective amid selling across several key sectors.

At around noon, the Sensex was down 264.56 points, or 0.34 per cent, at 76,970.90, while the Nifty 50 declined 82.30 points, or 0.34 per cent, to 24,072.60. Earlier in the session, the Sensex had slipped more than 320 points, while the Nifty fell close to 100 points.

The weakness extended to the broader market, although the decline remained relatively contained compared with the frontline indices. The Nifty MidCap and Nifty SmallCap indices were also trading in negative territory.

Global Weakness Sets the Tone

The domestic market opened amid cautious global cues as investors continued to assess higher bond yields, technology-sector weakness and geopolitical developments.

Rising bond yields remain an important concern for equity investors because higher yields can make fixed-income assets more attractive while increasing the cost of capital for companies. Global investors are also keeping a close watch on inflation, interest-rate expectations and economic data that could influence the future path of major central banks.

The pressure on global technology stocks has also affected sentiment toward riskier assets, including emerging-market equities.

Defence Stocks Snap Winning Streak

The Nifty Defence index ended its five-session winning streak, with several defence stocks coming under profit-booking pressure after their recent gains.

Bharat Dynamics was among the notable losers. The stock fell around 2.7 per cent to ₹1,355.90 after brokerage Elara Capital retained its ‘Reduce’ rating. The brokerage pointed to slower-than-expected first-quarter earnings and potential margin pressures.

The correction highlights the growing sensitivity of defence stocks to valuations after their strong recent performance.

Gas Stocks Rally on PNG Incentive Scheme

While the broader market remained weak, city gas distribution companies witnessed strong buying interest.

Indraprastha Gas (IGL), Mahanagar Gas (MGL) and Adani Total Gas gained as much as 6 per cent after the government approved an incentive scheme aimed at promoting and expanding domestic piped natural gas connections.

The policy support is expected to encourage wider adoption of PNG connections and could provide a positive demand outlook for companies operating in the city gas distribution segment.

Chemical Stocks Under Pressure

The chemical sector was among the weaker areas of the market. Stocks including Himadri Speciality Chemical, Solar Industries India and SRF faced selling pressure.

The weakness came amid broader risk aversion, with investors continuing to rotate between sectors based on valuations, earnings visibility and near-term catalysts.

Milky Mist Hits Upper Circuit

In the individual stock space, Milky Mist remained in focus after its shares hit the 10 per cent upper circuit, touching an intraday high of ₹199.55 on the BSE.

The stock extended its gains following its recent market debut, keeping investor attention firmly on the newly listed company.

Foreign Trade and Tariff Concerns

Investors are also tracking developments in India-US trade relations. Despite concerns surrounding US tariffs, India’s share of exports to the United States has remained broadly stable, with the US continuing to account for around one-fifth of India’s export basket, according to data cited in the market update.

The development remains important for sectors that have significant exposure to the US market, particularly manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, engineering goods and other export-oriented industries.

Gold and Silver Decline

Commodity markets also remained under pressure. Gold and silver prices declined on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) as international precious-metal prices weakened amid higher global bond yields.

Higher yields can reduce the relative appeal of non-yielding assets such as gold, particularly when investors expect interest rates to remain elevated for longer.

However, geopolitical uncertainty continues to provide an underlying support factor for precious metals, making the direction of yields and global risk sentiment crucial for the near-term outlook.

Institutional Activity Remains Important

With the benchmark indices struggling to sustain upward momentum, investors are closely watching foreign institutional flows, domestic institutional buying and developments in global markets.

The market’s recent weakness suggests that investors are becoming increasingly selective rather than exiting equities broadly. Earnings performance, valuations and company-specific developments are likely to remain key drivers of individual stocks.

Market Outlook

The immediate market trend remains cautious to negative as the Nifty continues to face selling pressure around the 24,100–24,200 zone. A sustained recovery above this area could help improve sentiment, while continued weakness may bring lower support levels into focus.

For the Sensex, the 77,000 mark remains an important psychological level. Persistent trade below this zone could keep the index vulnerable to further selling, while a recovery above the level may provide some stability.

Global bond yields, crude oil prices, foreign institutional flows and geopolitical developments will remain the key factors for the next market move. Investors may therefore prefer a stock-specific approach and avoid aggressive positions until broader market momentum improves.

Opening Bell: With global markets remaining volatile and domestic benchmarks under pressure, the Indian market is likely to maintain a cautious tone, with sector rotation and stock-specific developments driving intraday action.
