Strong Global Cues, TCS Earnings and Declining Market Volatility Lift Investor Sentiment; Midcaps, Smallcaps and Metal Stocks Join the Rally

Indian equity markets staged a powerful comeback on Friday, with benchmark indices rallying more than 1% during morning trade as positive global market cues, encouraging corporate earnings and easing volatility triggered broad-based buying across sectors.

The BSE Sensex climbed over 800 points to trade around 77,546, while the NSE Nifty50 surged above the crucial 24,200 mark. The rally was led by information technology stocks after Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported stable first-quarter earnings, while metal stocks and broader markets added further strength to the uptrend.

Market breadth remained firmly positive, indicating that investors were accumulating stocks across sectors rather than limiting buying to a few heavyweight companies.

Global Markets Set the Tone

The domestic rally was largely influenced by a positive overnight performance in global equity markets. Optimism surrounding technology shares, particularly semiconductor companies, improved overall risk appetite across Asian markets.

The rebound in global chip stocks encouraged investors to return to technology counters, benefiting Indian IT companies that derive a significant portion of their revenue from overseas markets.

The favourable international environment, coupled with expectations that global demand for technology services will remain resilient, provided a strong foundation for Friday's gains on Dalal Street.

TCS Earnings Ignite IT Rally

The biggest catalyst for the day's rally came from the information technology sector.

Shares of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) jumped over 4% after the company announced a stable set of quarterly numbers for the June quarter of FY27. The company reported a year-on-year increase in net profit, reassuring investors that India's largest IT services exporter continues to demonstrate resilience despite a challenging global business environment.

The positive earnings sparked buying across the entire IT pack.

Among the top performers were:

  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)

  • Tech Mahindra

  • HCL Technologies

  • LTIMindtree

  • Oracle Financial Services Software

  • Coforge

The Nifty IT Index advanced nearly 3.5%, making it one of the best-performing sectoral indices of the day.

The rally also reflects growing investor confidence that demand for digital transformation, cloud migration, artificial intelligence and enterprise technology services could remain healthy over the coming quarters.

Metal Stocks Extend Momentum

Metal companies also witnessed strong buying interest as optimism surrounding global industrial demand and commodity prices improved sentiment.

The Nifty Metal Index emerged as the top-performing sector during morning trade.

Investors accumulated steel, aluminium and mining companies amid expectations that infrastructure spending in major economies and stable commodity prices could support earnings in the coming quarters.

Consumer durable companies also traded firmly higher, reflecting continued optimism regarding domestic consumption.

Broader Markets Continue to Outperform

The strength was not limited to large-cap companies.

The broader market displayed impressive participation:

  • Nifty MidCap Index: Up around 1.19%

  • Nifty SmallCap Index: Up around 1.44%

The strong performance of mid-cap and small-cap stocks suggests that investor confidence is improving across the broader market rather than being concentrated in a handful of index heavyweights.

A healthy advance-decline ratio further highlighted widespread participation in Friday's rally.

India VIX Slides as Fear Eases

Another encouraging development for the markets was the sharp decline in volatility.

The India VIX, often referred to as the market's "fear gauge," dropped by more than 9% to nearly 12.13.

A lower VIX generally indicates that investors expect reduced market turbulence in the near term. Falling volatility often encourages institutional investors to increase equity exposure and supports stronger market momentum.

The decline in volatility comes after weeks of uncertainty arising from global geopolitical developments and concerns surrounding energy prices.

Corporate Developments Remain Supportive

Several corporate announcements also contributed to positive market sentiment.

HFCL Wins Major Export Order

Telecom infrastructure company HFCL secured an export order worth $51.98 million (approximately ₹495.8 crore) through its overseas subsidiary.

The order involves supplying optical fibre-based data centre connectivity solutions, reinforcing the company's growing presence in international markets.

RailTel Bags Government Contract

State-owned RailTel Corporation received a contract worth ₹18.54 crore from the Uttar Pradesh Information Technology and Electronics Department.

The project includes designing, installing and maintaining educational laboratories, vocational training infrastructure and hardware facilities for teachers and administrative staff.

ONGC Expands Strategic Oil Reserves

State-run energy major ONGC approved the expansion of India's strategic oil reserves following recent geopolitical disruptions in West Asia.

The decision is aimed at strengthening India's long-term energy security and reducing vulnerability to supply disruptions caused by international conflicts.

IPO Market Continues to Witness Healthy Activity

Primary market activity remained vibrant with multiple public issues attracting investor attention.

Among the ongoing issues:

  • Laser Power & Infra IPO entered its second day of subscription with an issue size of ₹742 crore.

  • Devson Catalyst IPO continued into Day 2.

  • Happy Steels IPO also remained open for bidding.

  • Kusumgar IPO entered its final day of subscription. The ₹650 crore issue is entirely an Offer for Sale (OFS), allowing existing shareholders to divest their holdings.

The steady pipeline of IPOs reflects improving confidence among companies seeking to raise capital from the equity markets.

Technical View: Bulls Regain Control

From a technical perspective, Friday's rally has strengthened the bullish sentiment after recent consolidation.

The Nifty has successfully reclaimed the 24,200 level, which could now act as an important short-term support.

A sustained move above this zone may open the possibility of testing higher resistance levels in the coming sessions, while the Sensex is once again approaching the 78,000 milestone.

Market participants will closely monitor quarterly earnings from other large-cap companies, foreign institutional investor (FII) flows, global bond yields and developments in international markets for further direction.

What Investors Should Watch

The market's near-term direction will largely depend on:

  • Q1 FY27 earnings from major banking, IT and manufacturing companies.

  • Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) and Domestic Institutional Investor (DII) activity.

  • Global technology sector performance and semiconductor demand.

  • Crude oil prices and geopolitical developments.

  • Domestic macroeconomic indicators, including inflation and industrial production.

While Friday's rally has improved overall sentiment, analysts believe sustained earnings growth and supportive global conditions will be essential for the indices to maintain their upward momentum.
