Technical analysts see positive chart structures in both banking indices, but public sector banks have displayed stronger momentum in October. Key support and resistance levels, SBI’s upcoming results and broader market volatility will be important factors for traders.

PSU Bank Index Outperforms Private Banks in October

The Nifty PSU Bank index is showing relatively stronger momentum than the Nifty Private Bank index in October, according to technical observations shared by market analysts. While both indices have recorded gains during the month, public sector banks have demonstrated comparatively better performance.

The Nifty PSU Bank index advanced approximately 3% during October as of the reported market update, while the Nifty Private Bank index gained around 0.8%. The benchmark Nifty 50 also rose approximately 0.8% over the same period.

Nandish Shah, Senior Derivative Analyst and Assistant Vice President for Retail Research at HDFC Securities, believes both banking indices appear favourably positioned on technical charts compared with several broader market indices. However, his assessment indicates a stronger near-term bias towards PSU banks.

The difference in performance suggests that investors have been showing greater interest in selected public sector lenders, although market direction could change as earnings announcements and broader economic developments influence sentiment.

Nifty PSU Bank: Trading Near Its 200-Day Exponential Moving Average

The Nifty PSU Bank index has displayed improving technical momentum following the results of selected banks over the preceding 10 trading sessions, according to Shah.

The index is trading around its 200-day exponential moving average (EMA), an indicator frequently used by technical analysts to assess a security's longer-term trend. Its position above the five-day and 11-day EMAs also points towards a positive short-term bias in the analyst's assessment.

The relevant technical levels identified by Shah are:

  • Immediate support: 8,100

  • Potential resistance: 8,477

Support refers to a price area where buying interest may emerge, while resistance is a level where selling pressure could increase. These levels are technical reference points rather than guaranteed turning points.

If the index sustains its upward momentum, traders may watch how it approaches the identified resistance zone. Conversely, a decline below support could weaken the near-term technical outlook and prompt a reassessment of the trend.

SBI Results Could Influence PSU Bank Momentum

The outlook for the PSU Bank index is also linked to the financial performance of State Bank of India (SBI), which carries a significant weight in the index.

SBI's results can influence sentiment towards the wider public sector banking segment because investors closely monitor the lender's profitability, credit growth, asset quality and loan-loss provisions.

A stronger-than-expected performance could support confidence in the sector, while disappointing results or cautious management commentary could weigh on the index. However, the overall direction will also depend on the performance of other constituents, broader market conditions and investor positioning.

For traders, monitoring the index alongside SBI's earnings and other major PSU lenders' results may provide a clearer picture of whether the recent relative strength can continue.

Nifty Private Bank Index Faces Resistance Near 27,800

The Nifty Private Bank index has also maintained a positive performance for October, but Shah notes that it has retraced after testing resistance near 27,800.

The analyst identifies the following important technical levels:

  • Potential support: 26,800

  • Resistance to monitor: 27,800

A sustained move above the resistance area could improve the technical outlook, while a decline towards support would test whether buyers are willing to defend the recent trading range.

The index's comparatively smaller gain in October does not necessarily indicate deteriorating fundamentals across private sector banks. Performance varies among individual lenders, and differences in earnings expectations, valuations and market sentiment can affect their share prices.

Investors should therefore distinguish between the overall index trend and the performance of individual banking stocks.

Bank Nifty Weakness Raises Near-Term Caution

Despite the relative strength displayed by the PSU and private banking indices, the broader banking benchmark, Nifty Bank, has shown signs of technical weakness.

Om Mehra, Technical Research Analyst at SAMCO Securities, noted that Nifty Bank had slipped below the 55,000 mark and the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level near 55,200. The decline followed an evening star candlestick pattern formed in the previous trading session.

Mehra also observed that the index had fallen below its 20-day simple moving average and was trading below its moving averages, signalling near-term selling pressure in his technical assessment.

The key levels identified by the analyst are:

Technical level Nifty Bank
First support 54,700
Next support 54,500
Immediate resistance 55,200
Higher resistance 55,500

A recovery above 55,200 could help ease some of the immediate technical pressure, while a sustained move beyond 55,500 would be another level for traders to monitor. On the downside, a break below 54,500 could indicate further weakness.

These levels are based on the analyst's assessment at the time of the report and may change as market conditions evolve.

Which Banking Stocks Have Performed Better in October?

Individual banking stocks have delivered mixed returns, reflecting differences in company-specific developments and market expectations.

Federal Bank and Punjab National Bank were among the stronger performers, gaining approximately 8% each during October as of the reported update.

Indian Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Union Bank of India, Bank of India and ICICI Bank recorded gains in the range of approximately 5% to 7%.

In contrast, YES Bank declined around 22%, while RBL Bank and Bandhan Bank fell approximately 11% each. IDFC First Bank declined around 8%, and IndusInd Bank was down approximately 6%.

These figures illustrate why the performance of an index may not reflect the experience of every constituent. Even when a banking index rises, individual stocks can fall sharply because of company-specific concerns, valuation changes or differences in investor expectations.

Past price performance should not be treated as a prediction of future returns.

What Should Traders and Investors Watch?

The near-term outlook for banking stocks will depend on a combination of technical signals, earnings developments and broader market conditions.

Traders may monitor whether the PSU Bank index sustains its position above the short-term moving averages, whether it approaches resistance near 8,477, and whether the private banking index can regain momentum towards 27,800.

SBI's financial results and commentary from other major lenders could influence sector sentiment. Developments in credit growth, deposit mobilisation, asset quality and net interest margins will also be important when evaluating the underlying performance of banks.

At the same time, weakness in the broader market could limit the upside for banking stocks, even where individual charts appear favourable. Technical support levels can fail during sharp market sell-offs, so traders should consider risk management and avoid relying on a single indicator.

Long-term investors should focus on the financial strength of individual banks, valuation, earnings sustainability and asset quality rather than selecting stocks solely on the basis of short-term price momentum.

Market Outlook: PSU Banks Hold a Relative Edge, but Confirmation Is Needed

The Nifty PSU Bank index currently appears stronger than the Nifty Private Bank index based on the October performance and technical levels discussed by analysts. Its position around the 200-day EMA and above the short-term EMAs supports a cautiously positive near-term assessment.

However, the broader banking market remains vulnerable to volatility, with Nifty Bank trading below several key technical indicators at the time of the report. SBI's results, individual lenders' earnings and the direction of the overall equity market will be important in determining whether PSU banks can maintain their relative outperformance.

For traders, the identified support and resistance zones can help frame short-term decisions, but they should be used alongside price confirmation and appropriate risk controls. For investors, the more durable approach is to evaluate each bank's fundamentals, financial performance and valuation before committing capital.
