UltraTech Cement Shares Gain After Quarterly Results

Shares of UltraTech Cement advanced in Wednesday's trading session following the company's September-quarter results for FY27. The stock gained as much as 2.9% intraday to touch ₹10,959 on the National Stock Exchange, reflecting investor interest in its earnings performance and outlook for cement pricing.

At around 10:38 AM on October 21, the shares were trading at ₹10,845, up 1.81%, compared with a 0.34% gain in the Nifty 50 at that time. The stock's movement suggested that investors were responding positively to the company's earnings growth and management's expectations for improved pricing.

UltraTech Cement, part of the Aditya Birla Group, is India's largest cement manufacturer. Its performance is closely linked to construction activity, infrastructure spending, housing demand, cement prices, fuel costs and capacity utilisation.

Q2FY27 Net Profit Rises 21.3%

UltraTech Cement reported consolidated net profit attributable to owners of the parent of ₹1,493.77 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, compared with ₹1,231.58 crore in the corresponding period a year earlier. This represented year-on-year growth of 21.3%.

Revenue from operations increased 18.8% to ₹23,295.07 crore from ₹19,606.93 crore. Consolidated net sales rose 18.9% to ₹23,024 crore, indicating a strong increase in business activity during the quarter.

Profit before interest, depreciation and tax (PBIDT) grew 17.3% to ₹3,832 crore from ₹3,268 crore in the year-ago period.

However, the PBIDT margin, calculated against net sales, narrowed to 16.6% from 16.9%, a contraction of approximately 23 basis points. The decline highlights the pressure that operating costs can exert even when revenue and absolute profit increase.

The results therefore present a mixed operating picture: strong revenue and volume growth supported earnings, while cost pressures continued to affect margins.

Domestic Cement Volumes Increase 13.8%

Domestic grey-cement sales volumes rose 13.8% year-on-year to 35.94 million tonnes from 31.58 million tonnes.

The increase points to higher sales volumes and potentially stronger market penetration. Volume growth can improve operating leverage by spreading fixed expenses across a larger production base, provided that pricing and cost conditions remain favourable.

UltraTech's scale and distribution network also give it an important position in India's cement market. However, higher volumes do not automatically translate into proportionately higher profitability, particularly when companies face intense competition, freight expenses and rising fuel costs.

The sustainability of volume growth will depend on housing construction, infrastructure projects, regional demand conditions and the company's ability to maintain pricing discipline.

Jefferies Identifies Cement Pricing as the Main Catalyst

Brokerage firm Jefferies retained UltraTech Cement as its top pick and raised its target price to ₹14,380, citing the importance of a sustained recovery in cement prices.

The brokerage highlighted management's increased focus on pricing during its post-results discussion. According to Jefferies, management indicated that pricing momentum had improved since mid-September, shifting attention towards protecting realisations rather than focusing exclusively on volumes.

Cement prices are a critical earnings variable because even moderate improvements in realisations can support profitability when sales volumes are substantial. If companies successfully pass on higher fuel and operating costs to customers, margins could improve.

Jefferies also noted that management was targeting year-on-year improvement in EBITDA per tonne in FY27 despite rising fuel expenses. Pricing measures, operating leverage and optimisation of the fuel mix are expected to support this objective.

The brokerage said the company's next phase of organic expansion could help it gain further market share. It estimated UltraTech's current market share at around 31–32% and viewed additional capacity as a potential driver of future volume growth.

However, these benefits depend on the timing of capacity additions, demand growth, project execution and the company's ability to earn adequate returns on new investments.

Elara Capital Retains Buy Rating

Elara Capital described UltraTech Cement's Q2FY27 performance as broadly in line with consensus estimates and reiterated its Buy rating with an unchanged target price of ₹13,006.

The brokerage highlighted volume growth of approximately 13% year-on-year, attributing the increase partly to market-share gains. It also noted that the sequential decline in performance was primarily linked to higher operating costs.

Fuel expenses could rise further during the second half of FY27 if geopolitical tensions in West Asia continue to affect energy markets. Cement manufacturing is energy-intensive, making the industry sensitive to changes in coal, petcoke, fuel and transportation costs.

Elara Capital also pointed to management's confidence in raising cement prices to pass on cost inflation. According to the brokerage, September exit realisations were 3% above the Q2FY27 average, while spot cement prices were 5% higher than the quarterly average.

If these higher realisations persist, they could help offset cost inflation and support profitability in subsequent quarters. Nevertheless, the extent of the benefit will depend on whether price increases are sustained across markets and accepted by customers.

UltraTech Expands Into Wires and Cables

UltraTech Cement is also broadening its presence in the building-products market. During Q2FY27, the company launched Ultravolt, its wires and cables business, and commissioned a manufacturing facility at Jhagadia in Gujarat.

The company is developing a pan-India distribution network for the new business. The expansion offers an opportunity to participate in a wider range of construction-related spending beyond cement.

A broader building-products portfolio could create additional customer relationships and distribution opportunities. However, the new business will require investment, effective execution and the development of a competitive market position. Its contribution to overall earnings will need to be assessed as operations scale up.

Key Factors Investors Should Monitor

UltraTech Cement's future performance will depend on several important variables:

  • Cement prices: Sustained improvement in realisations could support EBITDA per tonne and margins.

  • Fuel and freight costs: Higher energy prices could offset the benefits of stronger selling prices.

  • Volume growth: Housing, infrastructure and construction demand will influence capacity utilisation and sales.

  • Expansion plans: New capacity could support market-share gains but will require capital and disciplined execution.

  • Margins: Investors should track whether pricing improvements translate into stronger operating profitability.

  • Building-products diversification: The performance of the wires and cables business could influence the company's longer-term growth profile.

Market Outlook

UltraTech Cement's Q2FY27 results demonstrate healthy growth in revenue, net profit and domestic grey-cement volumes. The positive share-price response reflects investor attention towards the company's scale, market position and potential for improved cement pricing.

Jefferies sees sustained pricing recovery as the principal catalyst and has raised its target price to ₹14,380, while Elara Capital maintains a Buy rating with a target of ₹13,006. Both brokerages recognise the importance of pricing discipline, although rising fuel costs remain a significant risk.

For investors, the next stage of the story will depend on whether higher cement realisations can offset cost inflation and deliver the targeted improvement in EBITDA per tonne. Capacity expansion and diversification into building products may provide additional growth opportunities, but their contribution will depend on execution and returns on investment.

Investors should evaluate the stock's prevailing valuation alongside earnings growth, margins, cement-price trends and capital expenditure. Strong quarterly growth is encouraging, but sustained profitability rather than volume expansion alone will be crucial to the longer-term investment case.
