Reliance Industries rises to ₹1,209.50 on the BSE as Jio Platforms prepares for its October 21 IPO; the listing could unlock value for RIL investors while putting the spotlight on its telecom, retail and energy businesses

Shares of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, climbed nearly 3 per cent during intraday trading on Thursday, October 15, 2026, after its digital and telecom subsidiary, Jio Platforms Ltd, announced the schedule for its much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO).

The stock rose to an intraday high of ₹1,209.50 on the BSE, compared with its previous closing level of approximately ₹1,175.95. The rally extended Reliance’s gains over the preceding sessions, reflecting growing investor interest in the potential listing of Jio Platforms and its implications for the parent company’s valuation.

The proposed IPO is expected to provide the market with an independently determined valuation for Jio’s telecom and digital businesses. For existing Reliance shareholders, the central question is whether this price discovery will translate into a higher valuation for RIL or whether much of the anticipated benefit is already reflected in its share price.

Jio Platforms IPO: Key Details Investors Should Know

Jio Platforms is scheduled to launch its IPO on October 21, 2026, with a price band of ₹1,065–₹1,119 per share. At the upper end of the price band, the company aims to raise approximately ₹30,213 crore, valuing the business at around ₹10.3 trillion.

According to the details cited in the report, the offering is structured entirely as a fresh issue of shares. This means the proceeds from the issue are raised by the company rather than being generated through the sale of existing shares by shareholders.

The IPO is significant for India’s capital markets because of its scale and the size of Jio Platforms’ telecom and digital operations. A public listing will provide investors with a more direct route to invest in the business, while its shares will be valued through market trading after listing.

For Reliance Industries, the offering represents an important milestone in making the value of one of its largest businesses more visible to public-market investors.

How Much of Jio Platforms Does Reliance Own?

Reliance Industries currently holds approximately 66.43 per cent of Jio Platforms, while Meta Platforms and Google hold reported stakes of 9.98 per cent and 7.73 per cent, respectively.

Following the IPO and the issuance of new shares, Reliance’s ownership is expected to decline to approximately 64.5 per cent, according to estimates cited in the report. The reduction would result from dilution rather than a direct sale of its existing holding.

At the IPO price band, the value of Reliance’s remaining stake could be substantial. Harshal Dasani, business head at INVasset PMS, estimated that the stake could be worth around ₹6.6 lakh crore, equivalent to a significant proportion of Reliance’s own market capitalisation.

This calculation illustrates why the listing is important for RIL investors. If the market assigns a strong valuation to Jio Platforms, the value of Reliance’s ownership interest becomes easier to estimate. However, the value of that stake alone does not determine the fair value of Reliance Industries, which also has major retail, energy and other businesses, alongside corporate-level liabilities and costs.

Will Jio’s IPO Unlock Value for Reliance Shareholders?

One of the biggest potential benefits of the IPO is improved transparency around Jio Platforms’ valuation.

Before a subsidiary is separately listed, investors often value it indirectly through the parent company. This can make it difficult to determine how much of the parent’s share price is attributable to that subsidiary and how much comes from its other businesses.

A separate listing could help investors assess Jio Platforms using its own market capitalisation, financial performance, growth prospects and valuation multiples. This may improve the visibility of the value embedded in Reliance Industries’ holdings.

Centrum Broking has indicated that the IPO could unlock value for RIL shareholders through market-based price discovery for Jio’s telecom and digital operations.

However, value unlocking does not automatically translate into an equivalent increase in the parent company’s share price. Investors may already have anticipated the listing, while the market could also apply a holding-company discount to Reliance’s stake.

The actual benefit will depend on Jio Platforms’ listing valuation, its subsequent trading performance, the market’s assessment of Reliance’s remaining businesses and the extent to which the IPO changes investor perceptions of the parent company.

Understanding the Holding-Company Discount

A key factor in assessing Reliance Industries after the Jio listing will be the holding-company discount, commonly known as the holdco discount.

This discount arises when the market values a parent company at less than the combined estimated value of its investments and businesses. Investors may apply such a discount because of corporate overheads, taxes that could arise from monetising holdings, capital-allocation considerations, debt and the complexity of owning several businesses through one company.

Motilal Oswal Financial Services has previously estimated that RIL’s market price already reflects an approximate 18–36 per cent holding-company discount on its stake in Jio Platforms.

If this assessment is broadly accurate, some of the potential value-unlocking benefit may already be incorporated into Reliance’s share price. A separate listing could still narrow the discount, but that outcome is not guaranteed.

Investors should therefore distinguish between the estimated value of Reliance’s Jio stake and the value that the stock market is actually willing to assign to that holding through RIL shares.

Reliance Is More Than a Telecom Investment

Although Jio Platforms is attracting considerable attention, Reliance Industries remains a diversified business spanning retail, energy, refining, petrochemicals and other growth opportunities.

The Jio IPO will provide a more direct investment option for investors seeking exposure primarily to telecom and digital services. Reliance shareholders, however, will continue to have indirect exposure to Jio alongside the company’s other major businesses.

This diversification is an important part of the RIL investment case. The company’s share-price performance will not depend exclusively on the valuation of Jio Platforms.

Motilal Oswal Financial Services has highlighted the potential contribution of a stronger refining and petrochemicals cycle, a recovery in retail revenue growth and improved retail profitability as important medium-term triggers for Reliance Industries.

If these businesses deliver stronger operating performance, they could support the parent company’s earnings and valuation independently of the Jio listing. Conversely, weakness in energy margins or slower retail growth could limit the benefit from a favourable valuation for Jio Platforms.

What Could Drive RIL Shares After the IPO?

The direction of Reliance Industries shares after the IPO announcement and eventual listing will depend on several factors.

Jio Platforms’ final valuation and listing performance: Strong investor demand and sustained trading after listing could reinforce confidence in the value of Reliance’s stake. A weak listing or subsequent decline could have the opposite effect.

The holding-company discount: Investors will assess whether the listing makes RIL’s underlying value more transparent and whether the market reduces the discount applied to its Jio holding.

Retail business performance: Revenue growth, store productivity, profitability and the company’s ability to expand its consumer businesses will remain important valuation drivers.

Refining and petrochemical margins: Changes in global crude prices, refining spreads and petrochemical demand can influence the performance of Reliance’s energy operations.

Capital allocation and financial position: The market will also monitor investments, cash flows, liabilities and how effectively the company allocates capital across its businesses.

Broader market conditions: Interest rates, foreign institutional investment flows, market volatility and investor appetite for large-cap stocks could influence RIL’s performance regardless of the IPO.

What Should Existing RIL Shareholders Consider?

Existing Reliance shareholders should avoid evaluating the IPO solely on the basis of the initial price-band valuation or the immediate reaction in RIL shares.

The listing could improve transparency and provide a clearer reference point for Jio Platforms’ value. However, investors should also consider how much of that value is already reflected in Reliance’s current market price and how the company’s other businesses are performing.

Investors looking for direct exposure to Jio Platforms will have a separate listed investment option once the IPO process is completed. That does not necessarily make Reliance Industries less attractive, because RIL provides exposure to several businesses that are not captured by a standalone investment in Jio.

The two investment choices will have different risk and return profiles. Jio Platforms will be more directly linked to telecom and digital services, while Reliance Industries will remain influenced by a broader mix of business segments.

Market Outlook

Reliance Industries’ nearly 3 per cent intraday rise following the announcement of Jio Platforms’ IPO schedule reflects optimism about potential value unlocking. The proposed ₹30,213-crore offering could provide greater transparency into the value of Jio’s telecom and digital businesses and strengthen the investment narrative around RIL.

However, the IPO is only one part of Reliance’s broader valuation story. The extent of any sustained benefit will depend on Jio Platforms’ market valuation, the holding-company discount, retail profitability, energy-sector performance and overall market sentiment.

For shareholders, the key issue is whether the listing creates value beyond what is already priced into Reliance Industries. A stronger Jio valuation could be supportive, but sustained improvement in RIL’s own earnings and cash flows will remain essential to a durable share-price recovery.
