Indian benchmark indices climb sharply in early trade on October 15, led by information technology and banking shares, while weakness in mid- and small-cap stocks signals a selective market recovery.

Indian equity markets opened Thursday’s session on a strong note, with the BSE Sensex gaining nearly 900 points and the NSE Nifty 50 moving above the 22,800 mark. Buying interest in information technology and select banking stocks supported the benchmark indices, while a decline in Brent crude prices offered some relief amid continuing concerns over global energy costs.

At around 10:00 AM, the Sensex had advanced 828.99 points, or 1.14%, to 73,610.88. The Nifty 50 gained 244.20 points, or 1.08%, to 22,866.90.

IT Stocks Lead the Market Recovery

Information technology shares emerged as the strongest performers during the morning session. The Nifty IT index extended its winning streak to a third consecutive trading day, supported by gains in Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), HCLTech and Tech Mahindra.

At around 10:28 AM, the Nifty IT index stood at 30,805.70, up 634.70 points, or 2.10%. Tech Mahindra, TCS and Infosys were among the prominent gainers, reflecting strong buying interest in technology stocks.

Tata Technologies also attracted attention, with its shares rising more than 8% despite the company reporting a 5.2% year-on-year decline in net profit for the September quarter. The market response suggested that investors were weighing factors beyond the reported profit decline.

Canara Bank and HDB Financial Face Selling Pressure

The rally was not broad-based across all stocks. Canara Bank shares fell approximately 7% after the public sector lender reported only modest growth in operating profit for Q2 FY27, partly due to lower treasury income. Operating profit stood at ₹8,758 crore, compared with ₹8,588 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.

HDB Financial Services also traded lower, declining around 4.7% to ₹556.30 despite reporting positive quarterly numbers.

These contrasting movements underline the importance of company-specific earnings and management commentary during the ongoing results season.

Mid-Cap and Small-Cap Stocks Lag

While benchmark indices advanced, broader markets remained under pressure. The Nifty MidCap and Nifty SmallCap indices recorded declines, indicating that investors were concentrating their buying activity in selected large-cap stocks rather than participating in a market-wide rally.

The Nifty PSU Bank index was among the weakest sectoral performers, contrasting with the strength seen in information technology shares.

Brent Crude Prices and Global Cues

Brent crude oil prices declined around 1%, providing a potentially supportive signal for oil-importing economies such as India. Lower crude prices can ease pressure on the import bill, inflation and operating costs for sectors that depend heavily on petroleum products.

However, the impact on Indian markets will also depend on currency movements, foreign investor activity, global demand expectations and developments in geopolitical tensions.

Q2 FY27 Earnings in Focus

Investors are closely tracking the September-quarter earnings season. Wipro, Nestlé India and several other companies were scheduled to announce their results on Thursday, making corporate performance a key driver of stock-specific movements.

Market participants will assess revenue growth, margins, demand trends and management guidance to determine whether recent earnings justify current valuations.

Market Outlook

The sharp rise in the Sensex and Nifty, supported by IT stocks and select large-cap shares, points to improving sentiment in early trade. However, weakness in mid-cap, small-cap and PSU banking stocks suggests that the recovery remains uneven.

Investors should monitor whether the Nifty sustains its position above 22,800 and whether buying interest spreads to broader market segments. The direction of crude oil prices, fresh corporate earnings and global market cues may influence the next phase of trading.

The session’s early strength is encouraging, but a sustained recovery will require broader participation and continued support from earnings and macroeconomic developments.
