Services Scheduled to Reach New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin Between 4 AM and 2 PM on October 10 Face Cancellations; Metro Station Closures Also Under Consideration
Indian Railways has cancelled mail and express trains scheduled to arrive in Delhi on Saturday, October 10, 2026, as authorities prepare for planned protests in the national capital. The precautionary move aims to prevent passengers from facing difficulties amid the possibility of severe traffic congestion around major railway stations.
According to a Railway Board communication issued on Friday, the cancellations apply to trains departing from their originating stations after 2 PM on October 9 and scheduled to reach New Delhi or Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations between 4 AM and 2 PM on October 10.
Railway Board Cites Risk of Traffic Congestion
The Railway Board informed zonal railway authorities that the decision was taken in anticipation of significant road traffic disruptions around the two major railway stations. With demonstrations expected in central Delhi, authorities are preparing for the possibility of restricted road movement, congestion and difficulties accessing railway terminals.
A railway official described the cancellations as a preventive measure intended to minimise inconvenience to passengers. The decision is expected to affect travellers whose journeys fall within the specified departure and arrival windows.
Passengers planning to travel to Delhi have been advised to check their train status and cancellation details through official railway channels before leaving for their stations. Travellers should also verify refund eligibility and alternative travel arrangements with the relevant railway authorities.
Delhi Metro Station Closures Also Under Consideration
Railway cancellations are not the only transport-related measure being considered. Delhi Police has reportedly written to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), requesting the closure of 57 metro stations from 9 PM on Friday.
The proposed closures include stations serving important office districts and other high-traffic areas in central Delhi. However, a DMRC executive said the corporation had received the communication, while no final decision had been taken as of Friday afternoon.
If implemented, the proposed restrictions could affect commuters, office workers and visitors travelling through the capital during the period surrounding the demonstrations.
Protest Planned at Jantar Mantar
The transport restrictions come ahead of a proposed demonstration at Jantar Mantar by political parties and pressure groups, including the Cockroach Janata Party. The protesters are seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The planned gathering has prompted concerns about crowd management, public movement and access to important transport hubs. Delhi has previously witnessed metro station closures during major demonstrations in central areas, including protests demanding the resignation of former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
What Passengers Should Know
Travellers arriving in Delhi on Saturday morning should confirm whether their trains are operating before commencing their journeys. Those whose services have been cancelled may need to reconsider connections, accommodation plans or onward travel.
Passengers should rely on official Indian Railways announcements for train-specific information and DMRC updates for metro operations, as the status of individual services and proposed station closures may change.
The situation highlights how major public demonstrations can affect transport networks and travel planning in a busy metropolitan region. The extent of disruption will depend on the scale of the protests, traffic management measures and the final decisions taken by railway and metro authorities.
