Strong quarterly profit growth lifts investor sentiment, but technical indicators point to heavy resistance at ₹2,250–₹2,330, while ₹2,000 remains a crucial support zone
TCS Stock Rallies on Better-Than-Expected Earnings
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) shares surged on Friday, October 9, 2026, as investors reacted positively to the IT major's September-quarter earnings, although technical analysts cautioned that the recovery may face significant hurdles.
The stock climbed more than 5 per cent during early trade and subsequently touched an intraday high of ₹2,202.90 on the NSE, according to the supplied market data. At 10:49 am, TCS was trading at ₹2,197.60, up ₹121.60 or 5.86 per cent.
The rally followed the company's Q2FY27 results, which showed double-digit growth in both net profit and operating revenue. However, analysts warned that the stock continues to face broader technical weakness after an extended period of underperformance.
Q2FY27 Results Beat Market Expectations
TCS reported consolidated net profit of ₹13,884 crore for the September quarter, representing a 14.9 per cent year-on-year increase from ₹12,075 crore in Q2FY26.
Revenue from operations rose 11.2 per cent year-on-year to ₹73,188 crore.
The reported figures were marginally ahead of Bloomberg estimates, which had projected revenue of ₹73,108 crore and net profit of ₹13,786 crore.
The earnings performance provided a positive trigger for the stock after a difficult period for IT shares. Investors are also assessing the company's deal pipeline, international demand and opportunities arising from artificial intelligence and enterprise technology transformation.
Nevertheless, revenue growth and profitability will need to remain consistent in subsequent quarters to support a durable recovery in the share price.
Technical Analyst Flags Resistance at ₹2,250–₹2,330
Hitesh Tailor, Technical Research Analyst at Choice Broking, has cautioned that TCS continues to trade below important exponential moving averages (EMAs) on daily, weekly and monthly charts.
According to the analyst, the downward direction of the weekly moving averages indicates continuing selling pressure. Short-term recoveries could therefore attract selling as the stock approaches previous breakdown levels.
Tailor identifies the ₹2,250–₹2,330 range as a major resistance zone. This area combines previous price breakdown levels with declining weekly moving averages, potentially making it difficult for the stock to sustain an upward move.
A sustained breakout above this range would require stronger buying interest and evidence that the broader downtrend is weakening.
₹2,000 Support Becomes Crucial
On the downside, the ₹2,000–₹2,020 zone is identified as an important psychological and technical support area.
Tailor cautions that a decisive weekly close below ₹2,000 could indicate a significant deterioration in the stock's technical structure.
Such a breakdown could expose the shares to further downside towards ₹1,850 and ₹1,750, according to the analyst's assessment.
These levels are conditional technical projections, not assured price targets. The actual direction will depend on price behaviour, market conditions and the strength of buying or selling pressure.
For investors, the ₹2,000 zone is therefore an important level to monitor, particularly if the current earnings-driven recovery loses momentum.
Derivatives Data Signals Caution
Dharmesh Bhatt, Head of Derivatives Research at Systematix Institutional Research, highlighted the positioning in TCS futures and options ahead of the earnings announcement.
TCS futures open interest stood at 259.6 lakh shares, down 0.4 lakh shares, indicating no significant fresh directional build-up before the results.
Call open interest increased approximately 50 per cent in a day to 227 lakh shares. The largest additions were reported at the ₹2,300 call strike, with an increase of 19.2 lakh shares, and the ₹2,200 call strike, with an increase of 14.1 lakh shares.
The increase in call open interest accompanied by falling premiums was interpreted by the analyst as indicating call writing, which can reflect expectations of limited upside near those strikes.
Put open interest rose around 33 per cent to 138 lakh shares, while the put-call ratio declined to 0.61 from 0.69.
The ₹2,000 strike emerged as an important area of put positioning, with fresh writing reported between ₹2,000 and ₹2,080.
These derivatives indicators suggest that market participants are watching the lower support zone closely while positioning around higher strikes may limit near-term upside. However, open interest and option premiums can change quickly and should not be treated as definitive predictions.
Can TCS Break Above ₹2,200?
Bhatt believes a move above ₹2,150 could help the stock test ₹2,200. TCS subsequently reached an intraday high above that level in the supplied update.
However, the analyst cautioned that existing futures and options positioning did not strongly support a sustained move towards ₹2,250–₹2,300 at that stage.
For a stronger breakout signal, Bhatt identified a reduction in call open interest around the ₹2,100–₹2,200 strikes or a sustained closing price above ₹2,150 as developments to monitor.
Because the stock has already moved sharply after its results, investors should distinguish between an intraday price spike and a sustained breakout supported by trading volumes and follow-through buying.
TCS Has Underperformed in 2026
Despite Friday's sharp rally, TCS has remained under pressure over the longer term.
According to the supplied report, the stock was down nearly 32 per cent year-to-date at the levels prevailing before the latest recovery and had declined more than 50 per cent from its August 2024 peak of ₹4,386.
The stock's 52-week range in the supplied market snapshot was ₹1,976–₹3,350, highlighting the extent of its recent volatility.
The latest earnings announcement has improved near-term sentiment, but it does not by itself reverse the longer-term trend. Investors will need to assess whether earnings growth, deal bookings and demand conditions can sustain a recovery beyond the initial post-results reaction.
What Investors Should Watch
TCS investors should monitor both fundamental and technical indicators over the coming sessions.
-
₹2,000–₹2,020: Immediate support zone highlighted by Choice Broking.
-
₹2,150: A level identified by Systematix as important for confirming stronger upward momentum, although the stock has already traded above it intraday.
-
₹2,200: A near-term price area reached during Friday's rally.
-
₹2,250–₹2,330: Major overhead resistance identified by Choice Broking.
-
₹1,850 and ₹1,750: Potential downside levels if the stock records a decisive weekly close below ₹2,000, according to the technical assessment.

Market Outlook
TCS's Q2FY27 earnings have provided a near-term catalyst for the stock, with higher profits and revenue supporting the sharp recovery. However, the broader technical picture remains challenging, and analysts are divided between the possibility of further upside and the risk of renewed selling near resistance.
The key test will be whether TCS can sustain its gains and move convincingly through the ₹2,250–₹2,330 resistance band. Failure to maintain momentum could result in consolidation or renewed pressure, while a decisive breakdown below ₹2,000 would weaken the technical outlook further.
Investors should consider earnings visibility, valuation, global IT spending and their own risk tolerance alongside technical levels. A sharp post-results rally should not automatically be interpreted as confirmation that the stock's longer-term decline has ended.
