Strong sports assets, a cash-generative core television business and rising valuations of IPL franchises support Elara Capital’s bullish view on Sun TV, while technical charts point to ₹650 as the key breakout level
Sun TV Network shares have staged a sharp recovery over the past three weeks, gaining around 40 per cent as investors reassess the value of the company’s core media business and its growing portfolio of sports assets.
The stock climbed from ₹451.70 on September 18 to an intraday high of ₹663.90 on September 30 on the NSE. After the sharp rally, the shares have consolidated at elevated levels.
On Thursday, Sun TV touched an intraday high of ₹640 and a low of ₹625. At around 11:55 am, the stock was trading at ₹629, down about 1.2 per cent, even as the broader Nifty 50 was lower by around 1.1 per cent.
Despite the recent recovery, Sun TV remains approximately 25 per cent below its lifetime high of ₹842, recorded in August 2024.
Elara Capital retains Buy, raises target to ₹925
Elara Capital has maintained its Buy recommendation on Sun TV and increased its target price to ₹925 per share, up sharply from its earlier target of ₹780.
The brokerage believes Sun TV continues to possess a highly cash-generative core television business, which provides a strong financial foundation for the company's broader media and sports investments.
According to Elara, the core media business remains the group's “cash cow”, while the sports portfolio is becoming increasingly important in determining the company's overall valuation.
The brokerage's revised valuation incorporates the value of Sun TV's sports franchises, along with its core television operations and cash on the balance sheet.
Sports portfolio becomes a major valuation driver
Sun TV's sports exposure is centred around the SunRisers Hyderabad (IPL), SunRisers Eastern Cape (SA20) and SunRisers Leeds (The Hundred) franchises.
Elara estimates that these sports assets collectively account for roughly 4-5 per cent of its sum-of-the-parts equity valuation, although their strategic importance could increase as franchise valuations continue to rise.
The key catalyst is the rapidly increasing value of established cricket franchises.
Recent private-market transactions involving IPL teams have provided investors with benchmarks for valuing Sun TV's own sports assets.
The reported transactions involving Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have highlighted the substantial valuations investors are willing to assign to established IPL franchises with strong brands, fan bases and commercial rights.
This has potentially created a significant embedded value within Sun TV that may not be fully reflected in the company's conventional media valuation.
SunRisers Hyderabad adds significant optionality
SunRisers Hyderabad is one of the most important assets within Sun TV's sports portfolio.
The franchise has reached the IPL playoffs multiple times and won the tournament in 2016, while also finishing runners-up in 2018 and 2024.
Beyond sporting performance, the franchise provides exposure to one of India's fastest-growing sports entertainment ecosystems.
The commercial value of IPL teams extends beyond match-day revenue. Media rights, sponsorships, merchandising, digital engagement and brand partnerships have transformed successful franchises into valuable long-term entertainment assets.
This creates a potential valuation rerating opportunity for Sun TV if private-market transactions continue to establish higher benchmarks for IPL teams.
Core television business remains the cash engine
While sports assets are attracting increasing investor attention, Elara Capital believes Sun TV's traditional media operations remain the company's fundamental earnings engine.
The television business benefits from a strong regional presence, particularly across South Indian markets.
A large content library, established brands, television channels and advertising relationships provide recurring cash generation.
This cash-generative nature is particularly important because it allows Sun TV to maintain financial flexibility while simultaneously investing in newer entertainment opportunities.
The combination of a mature cash-generating media business and potentially high-value sports assets gives Sun TV a differentiated profile within the Indian media sector.
Sum-of-the-parts valuation supports ₹925 target
Elara Capital's valuation framework separates Sun TV's businesses to capture the different characteristics of each asset.
The brokerage values the core media business using a discounted cash flow approach, with a weighted average cost of capital of 11.7 per cent and a terminal growth assumption of 1 per cent.
It values the core media operations at approximately ₹12,300 crore, equivalent to around 15 times estimated FY28 core media profit after tax.
The brokerage applies separate valuation frameworks to SunRisers Hyderabad and SunRisers Leeds, while also factoring in cash on the company's balance sheet.
The resulting sum-of-the-parts valuation translates into a target price of ₹925 per share.
Stock has staged a major technical recovery
The fundamental story has been accompanied by a strong technical recovery.
According to the technical view cited in the report, Sun TV has recorded a sharp weekly move accompanied by significant trading volumes.
The stock recovered from the ₹450-480 base and moved decisively above its weekly exponential moving average around ₹530.
This suggests that buying interest has returned after a prolonged period of consolidation.
However, the stock is now approaching an important technical hurdle.
₹650 breakout level holds the key
The ₹640-650 zone is currently the most important resistance area for Sun TV.
A sustained weekly close above ₹650 could confirm a major breakout from the stock's multi-month consolidation pattern.
Such a breakout could potentially open the way towards ₹700-720, followed by ₹750, according to the technical view.
On the downside, the recent breakout structure and the ₹530 weekly EMA become important reference points for investors assessing whether the long-term recovery remains intact.
The stock's sharp rise also means that short-term volatility could remain elevated as traders book profits around major resistance levels.
Why investors are watching Sun TV differently
The investment case for Sun TV is increasingly moving beyond its traditional television business.
Three factors are now working together:
First, the core television business generates cash. This provides earnings stability and financial flexibility.
Second, sports franchises are gaining strategic value. Rising IPL valuations provide an external benchmark that could unlock previously underappreciated value.
Third, the company is benefiting from the broader expansion of India's sports entertainment economy. Cricket is increasingly becoming a major commercial ecosystem spanning television, streaming, advertising, sponsorship and digital engagement.
If these trends continue, Sun TV could potentially command a higher valuation than a conventional regional broadcaster.
Risks investors should monitor
Despite the bullish brokerage view, the stock's recent rally also raises several risks.
A large part of the near-term momentum has already been captured, meaning profit-taking could increase if the stock fails to cross ₹650 decisively.
The company's valuation is also increasingly influenced by assumptions surrounding sports franchise values. Private-market transactions provide useful benchmarks, but they may not always translate directly into realisable value for shareholders.
The core television business also remains exposed to advertising cycles, audience trends, competition from digital platforms and changing consumer viewing habits.
Investors should therefore evaluate both the underlying cash generation of the media business and the long-term monetisation potential of the sports portfolio.
What investors should watch
The key triggers for Sun TV going forward include:
-
Sustained weekly close above ₹650
-
Progress towards the ₹700-720 technical zone
-
Long-term potential for ₹750 if the breakout sustains
-
Performance of SunRisers Hyderabad in future IPL seasons
-
Changes in IPL franchise valuations
-
Advertising and subscription trends in the core television business
-
Cash generation and capital allocation
-
Further developments across the company's sports portfolio
-
Any rerating of the core media business
Market Outlook
Sun TV's recent rally reflects a combination of strong technical momentum and growing recognition of the value embedded in its sports assets.
Elara Capital's revised ₹925 target indicates significant potential upside from current levels, but the immediate technical test remains ₹640-650. A sustained breakout above ₹650 could strengthen the bullish setup and potentially push the stock towards ₹700-720 and subsequently ₹750.
Fundamentally, the company's strongest attraction remains the combination of a cash-generative core television business and potentially high-value sports franchises.
For investors, the key question is whether the recent rally marks the beginning of a broader valuation rerating or simply a sharp recovery within a longer consolidation phase. The answer will depend on sustained earnings performance, sports asset valuations and the stock's ability to establish itself above the ₹650 breakout zone.
