Partnership to cover 126 weekly flights across eight Indian cities as airlines remove codeshare booking restrictions from October 15

Air India and Singapore Airlines (SIA) have announced an expansion of their commercial cooperation, aimed at giving travellers greater flexibility and access to more flight options between India and Singapore.

The expanded arrangement is part of the initiatives under the Commercial Cooperation Framework Agreement signed by the two airlines in January this year. From October 15, travellers will be able to access a wider range of eligible itineraries through the booking channels of both airlines.

The partnership covers 126 weekly flights between Singapore and eight Indian cities, strengthening connectivity between one of Asia’s major aviation hubs and some of India’s largest metropolitan and business centres.

Wider Connectivity Across Eight Indian Cities

The expanded cooperation will cover flights connecting Singapore with Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata and Mumbai.

The arrangement gives passengers greater choice when searching for flights between India and Singapore, while also improving the ability of the two airlines to use their respective networks to serve customers.

Singapore is a major international aviation hub, connecting passengers from India to destinations across Southeast Asia, East Asia, Australia and other international markets. Greater commercial integration between the two carriers could therefore provide passengers with improved access to onward international connections.

For Air India, the partnership also supports its broader strategy of strengthening its international network and positioning itself as a larger global airline.

Codeshare Booking Restriction to Be Removed

A key change under the expanded cooperation is the removal of an existing booking restriction.

At present, an eligible Air India-operated codeshare flight booked through Singapore Airlines must include an SIA-operated flight. Similarly, an eligible Singapore Airlines-operated flight booked through Air India must include an Air India-operated flight.

From October 15, this requirement will be removed.

Passengers will then be able to book eligible India-Singapore flights operated by either airline on a standalone basis through the other carrier’s booking platform.

This change is expected to simplify the booking process and provide travellers with more flexibility when selecting flights based on schedule, availability and other preferences.

Greater Choice for Business and Leisure Travellers

India-Singapore traffic includes a significant mix of business, leisure, visiting-friends-and-relatives and connecting international passengers.

For business travellers, greater access to flight schedules could make it easier to choose departure and arrival times that suit their itineraries.

Leisure travellers may also benefit from a wider range of options, while passengers connecting through Singapore could gain greater flexibility in planning international journeys.

The expanded arrangement could also improve the customer experience by allowing passengers to access eligible flights operated by either airline through the booking ecosystem of the other carrier.

Singapore Airlines Holds 25.1% Stake in Air India

The deeper commercial relationship also has a strategic dimension.

Singapore Airlines holds a 25.1 per cent stake in Air India, making it an important strategic partner of the Tata Group-owned airline.

The partnership therefore extends beyond a conventional codeshare arrangement and forms part of a broader commercial relationship between the two airlines.

Greater cooperation can potentially help the carriers improve network connectivity, customer reach and international distribution while allowing them to leverage complementary strengths.

For Air India, access to Singapore Airlines' extensive international network can be particularly relevant as it seeks to expand its global presence.

Air India’s International Expansion Continues

The latest agreement comes as Air India works to strengthen its position in international aviation.

The airline has been rebuilding its network, fleet and operating capabilities as part of the Tata Group’s broader transformation of the Air India group.

International connectivity is an important component of that strategy because India is one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, supported by rising incomes, increased business travel and expanding international tourism.

Improved partnerships with established global carriers can help Air India expand its reach without relying solely on operating its own aircraft on every international route.

Potential Benefits for Both Airlines

For Singapore Airlines, deeper cooperation with Air India provides access to a large and expanding Indian aviation market.

India represents an important source of international travellers, while Singapore serves as a major connecting hub for passengers travelling onwards to Southeast Asia, Australia and other global destinations.

For Air India, the relationship can provide additional distribution and connectivity opportunities through Singapore Airlines’ network.

The expanded arrangement could therefore create benefits for both carriers by improving network reach and potentially increasing passenger flows across their respective systems.

Aviation Industry Faces Cost Pressures

The partnership comes at a challenging time for the aviation industry.

Airlines globally continue to manage volatile fuel prices, currency movements, aircraft availability constraints and rising operating expenses. In India, elevated aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices have also placed pressure on airline profitability.

Against this backdrop, partnerships and network optimisation can become increasingly important. Airlines can use commercial cooperation to expand connectivity and improve customer choice without necessarily adding capacity on every route independently.

The ability to fill aircraft efficiently and generate additional passenger traffic through partner networks can also become important for maintaining profitability.

Stronger India-Singapore Air Corridor

The expanded cooperation is expected to strengthen one of the important international air corridors linking India with Southeast Asia.

With 126 weekly flights covered across eight Indian cities, the partnership creates a sizeable platform for deeper cooperation.

The removal of the codeshare booking restriction from October 15 should further enhance the practical benefits for passengers by allowing eligible flights to be booked independently through either airline's channels.

Market Outlook

The expanded Air India-Singapore Airlines partnership is strategically significant for both carriers as India’s international aviation market continues to grow.

For Air India, deeper cooperation with Singapore Airlines can support its ambition to build a stronger global network and improve access to international connecting traffic. For Singapore Airlines, the arrangement strengthens its relationship with one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets.

The immediate benefit for travellers will be greater flexibility across 126 weekly flights connecting Singapore with eight Indian cities. Over the longer term, the partnership could support higher passenger traffic, stronger network utilisation and broader international connectivity.

However, the commercial benefits will also depend on passenger demand, aircraft availability, fuel costs and the airlines’ ability to translate expanded connectivity into sustainable revenue and profitability.
