Banking stocks, Trent and select financial shares drive the rebound as investors track RBI policy, Q2 earnings, crude oil and global market cues
Indian benchmark equity indices extended their gains on Tuesday, with the Sensex rising around 350 points and the Nifty 50 moving above the 22,650 mark as buying interest strengthened across banking and financial stocks. The rebound comes after a prolonged period of weakness in the domestic market and reflects improved risk appetite among investors.
At around 10:00 AM, the Nifty 50 was trading near 22,637, up about 0.36%, while the Nifty Bank index gained around 0.4%. The broader market also remained positive, with the Nifty Midcap 100 rising around 0.46%. India VIX, a measure of expected market volatility, was near 14.2 and down almost 4%, indicating that near-term fear levels have eased.
Banking Stocks Lead the Recovery
Banking and financial stocks were among the strongest contributors to Tuesday's gains. The Nifty Financial Services index was up around 0.76%, while private-sector banking stocks attracted fresh buying interest.
Kotak Mahindra Bank was among the notable gainers, with the stock rising sharply after the bank's quarterly business update. Other banking counters also advanced, helping the Nifty Bank index remain firmly in positive territory.
The strength in financial stocks is significant because banks and financial companies have a large weight in the benchmark indices. Sustained buying in this segment can therefore provide greater support to the broader market even when some other sectors remain under pressure.
Trent Surges Nearly 10% After Strong Q2 Update
Trent emerged as one of the biggest individual gainers in Tuesday's session, with its shares jumping close to 10% after the company released a strong second-quarter business update.
The company's standalone revenue from operations increased about 23% year-on-year to ₹5,788 crore. Trent also added 27 stores during the quarter, reinforcing expectations that its retail expansion strategy continues to gain traction.
The sharp move in Trent also lifted sentiment in the broader consumer and retail space. Investors are closely watching whether strong store additions and revenue growth can translate into sustained earnings momentum in the coming quarters.
Chemical Stocks Remain in Focus
The Nifty Chemical index was also among the stronger sectoral performers, gaining more than 1% during the session. Buying interest in chemical stocks provided additional support to the market beyond the financial sector.
The sector has been closely watched by investors because of improving demand expectations, changes in global supply chains and the potential benefits for Indian manufacturers from shifts in international sourcing.
However, investors remain selective, particularly in companies where earnings visibility is still dependent on global demand and commodity-price movements.
IT Stocks Under Pressure
While the broader market remained positive, information technology stocks traded relatively weak. The Nifty IT index was down around 0.75% in early trade, making it one of the weaker major sectoral indices.
The IT sector is entering an important earnings period, with investors assessing whether technology spending, artificial intelligence-related demand and global macroeconomic conditions will influence the revenue outlook of Indian IT companies.
TCS is among the key companies in focus ahead of its quarterly results, with the company's earnings expected to provide an important indication of demand conditions in the global technology services market.
Global Cues Offer Support
Overseas markets also provided a supportive backdrop for Indian equities. US markets had ended the previous session higher, while Asian markets remained mixed-to-positive.
Global investors, however, continue to monitor bond yields closely. Higher US Treasury yields remain a potential source of pressure for emerging-market equities because they can influence global capital flows and the attractiveness of dollar-denominated assets.
Crude oil is another important variable for Indian markets. Brent crude was trading around the $100-per-barrel level, keeping concerns about imported inflation and India's external balance firmly on the radar of investors.
RBI Policy and Q2 Earnings in Focus
The Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy decision is one of the biggest domestic events influencing investor sentiment this week. Market participants are assessing the central bank's stance on inflation, growth and liquidity conditions.
At the same time, the September-quarter earnings season is beginning to take centre stage. Investors will look for evidence of demand recovery, margin trends, rural consumption, urban spending and corporate commentary on the economic outlook.
Financial results could become a major driver of individual stocks as companies provide their first detailed assessment of business conditions during the July-September quarter.
Broader Market Shows Improved Sentiment
The broader market was also trading in positive territory, although gains were more measured compared with some large-cap stocks. Nifty Midcap 100 was up around 0.46%, while the Nifty Next 50 gained about 0.70%.
The decline in India VIX towards 14 also indicates that immediate market anxiety has moderated. However, lower volatility does not necessarily mean that the broader correction is over, particularly with crude oil, global yields, foreign flows and earnings remaining important variables.
Market Outlook
Tuesday's recovery indicates that buyers are attempting to regain control after the market's recent weakness. Banking stocks, strong corporate updates and easing volatility are providing support, while crude oil near $100 and elevated global bond yields remain key risks.
For the Nifty, the 22,600 zone has become an important near-term reference point. Holding above this level could strengthen the recovery and encourage further buying, while a failure to sustain the gains could bring renewed volatility.
Investors are likely to remain highly stock-specific as the Q2 earnings season gathers momentum. Banking updates, TCS results, crude-oil movements and the RBI's policy signals will remain among the most important factors shaping market direction in the near term.
