Leadership transition removes a major uncertainty as investors look for a turnaround in growth, deposits, technology and customer confidence
HDFC Bank shares gained nearly 2 per cent in early trading on Monday after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved Anup Bagchi’s appointment as the bank’s next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. The leadership change has been positively received by brokerages, which believe that the appointment removes a prolonged succession overhang and could help restore confidence among investors and customers.
The stock opened at ₹731.95 on the NSE and climbed to ₹734.20 in early trade, marking a gain of around 1.8 per cent. However, the shares later pared gains and were trading around ₹715.45 during the morning session.
Anup Bagchi to Take Charge From October 27
Bagchi, 56, will take over from Sashidhar Jagdishan as MD and CEO from October 27 for a three-year term. He brings more than three decades of experience across banking and financial services, having been associated with the ICICI Group since 1992.
He is currently the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance and previously served as an Executive Director at ICICI Bank. His experience spans retail banking, wholesale banking, insurance and other financial-services businesses.
An alumnus of IIT-Kanpur and IIM-Bangalore, Bagchi’s broad exposure to different parts of the financial-services industry is being viewed by brokerages as a key strength as HDFC Bank enters a new phase.
Brokerages See Leadership Stability as a Positive
Motilal Oswal Financial Services described Bagchi as an “all-round banker” with experience across multiple BFSI verticals. The brokerage believes that changes in the leadership structure should help reduce uncertainty and improve investor sentiment.
It expects HDFC Bank’s operating performance to begin improving from FY28, supported by a recovery in loan growth and margins. The brokerage has retained its Buy recommendation and a target price of ₹925.
Emkay Global also said the RBI approval was broadly in line with market expectations. It believes Bagchi’s appointment could help restore confidence because of his extensive banking experience and exposure to diverse responsibilities within the ICICI Group.
Deposit Growth and Technology Among Key Priorities
The new CEO will inherit several important operational challenges. According to brokerages, one of the immediate priorities will be ensuring stability across the senior management team while rebuilding momentum in deposits and loans.
Improving the productivity of newer branches is another area that could receive attention. HDFC Bank has expanded its physical network substantially, making efficient branch operations and customer acquisition important for improving returns from the expansion.
Technology and digital capabilities are also expected to remain high on the agenda. With competition among private-sector banks intensifying, HDFC Bank will need to continue upgrading its digital platforms and customer experience to remain competitive with leading peers.
The bank will also have to strengthen internal processes and controls following concerns around certain past practices, including allegations relating to mis-selling.
Long Period of Stock Underperformance
The leadership change comes after a prolonged period of underperformance by HDFC Bank shares. The stock has declined around 25 per cent over the past year and remains about 8 per cent lower over the past five years, highlighting the gap between the bank's market performance and the expectations traditionally associated with one of India's largest private-sector lenders.
The stock has also traded well below its 52-week high of ₹1,020.50. Its recent 52-week low stands at ₹681.90.
This underperformance has, however, changed the valuation equation, according to Emkay Global. The brokerage believes that the stock's relatively attractive valuation could provide room for a sustained re-rating if the new management delivers on its priorities.
Emkay has reiterated its Buy rating with a target price of ₹1,225, implying substantial upside from the previous closing price of ₹721.
Investors Now Focus on Execution
While the appointment has removed an important uncertainty, the next phase will depend largely on execution. Investors will closely watch whether Bagchi can accelerate deposit mobilisation, revive loan growth, improve margins and strengthen operational efficiency.
The bank's ability to improve customer confidence and maintain asset quality will also remain critical. At the same time, broader market factors, including foreign portfolio investor flows, interest-rate expectations and geopolitical uncertainty, could influence the pace of any potential re-rating.
For HDFC Bank, the leadership transition therefore represents more than a routine management change. It provides an opportunity to reset investor expectations after several years of muted stock performance.
Market Outlook
The positive initial reaction to Anup Bagchi’s appointment indicates that investors are treating the leadership transition as a potential catalyst for HDFC Bank. However, a durable recovery in the stock is likely to depend on tangible improvements in business performance rather than the appointment alone.
The key indicators to watch in the coming quarters will be deposit growth, credit growth, net interest margins, branch productivity, digital execution and management stability. If these metrics improve from FY27 onward and earnings growth strengthens toward FY28, the stock could attract renewed institutional interest.
With the succession issue now largely settled, the market’s attention is shifting from who will lead HDFC Bank to how effectively the new leadership can deliver the turnaround.
