Positive Global Cues Lift Sentiment; Banks, PSU Banks, Metals and Oil & Gas Lead Gains

Indian equities began Monday’s trading session on a strong footing, with the Sensex gaining more than 600 points and the Nifty50 moving above the 22,600 mark as investors responded positively to global market cues and easing concerns over further monetary tightening.

At around 10:00 AM, the BSE Sensex was up 644.47 points, or 0.90 per cent, at 72,554.17, while the NSE Nifty50 advanced 190.40 points, or 0.85 per cent, to 22,612.35. The market rally was broad-based, with banking, financial, metal, oil and gas and chemical stocks supporting the benchmark indices.

The positive opening followed gains across global equities after weaker-than-expected economic data reduced expectations of additional monetary tightening in the United States. The change in rate expectations helped improve risk appetite across equity markets.

India VIX Drops Nearly 7%

One of the notable developments in Monday’s session was the sharp decline in the India VIX, a key indicator of expected market volatility.

The volatility index fell 6.6 per cent to 13.50 by 10:30 AM, signalling that near-term uncertainty had eased considerably. A lower VIX generally indicates reduced expectations of sharp swings in equity prices, although investors are likely to remain watchful of global monetary policy, currency movements and incoming economic data.

The decline in volatility also provided additional support to the broader risk-on mood in domestic equities.

Banking Stocks Drive the Rally

Banking stocks emerged as one of the strongest areas of the market in early trade. The Nifty Bank index climbed 1.36 per cent to touch an intraday high of 55,192.

HDFC Bank was among the key contributors to the banking-sector rally. The stock gained around 1.8 per cent to ₹734.20 on the NSE after the Reserve Bank of India approved the appointment of Anup Bagchi.

AU Small Finance Bank also featured among the leading banking stocks, while the broader PSU banking space recorded strong buying interest.

The Nifty PSU Bank index emerged as one of the best-performing sectoral indices during the early session, suggesting that investors were actively seeking exposure to financial stocks amid improving market sentiment.

Bajaj Finance, Shriram Finance and ITC Among Top Gainers

Within the Nifty50, Bajaj Finance, Shriram Finance and ITC were among the leading gainers.

Financial stocks benefited from the broader improvement in risk appetite, while select defensive and consumer-oriented counters also attracted buying interest.

The strength in financial services remained particularly important for the benchmark indices because of the sector's significant weight in the Nifty and Sensex.

Metals, Oil & Gas and Chemicals Outperform

Sectoral performance was largely positive, with Nifty Metal, Nifty Oil and Gas and Nifty Chemical indices among the stronger performers.

The buying interest in metals and commodity-linked stocks came amid a supportive global backdrop, while oil and gas companies benefited from strength across selected energy-related counters.

The sectoral rotation indicates that investors were not concentrating solely on large-cap technology stocks but were instead spreading exposure across cyclicals and domestic-facing sectors.

IT and Pharma Stocks Buck the Trend

Despite the broad-based market rally, IT, pharma and healthcare stocks remained under pressure.

The Nifty IT index was among the major laggards in early trade. Pharma and healthcare stocks also declined, creating a clear divergence between cyclical sectors and some defensive segments of the market.

The weakness in IT stocks came even as the overall market remained firmly positive, suggesting that sector-specific factors continued to influence investor positioning.

Broader Market Remains Positive

The broader market also participated in Monday's rally.

The Nifty MidCap 100 and Nifty SmallCap 100 indices gained more than 0.8 per cent each around the opening minutes, although the gains moderated later in the morning. At around 10:00 AM, the Nifty MidCap and Nifty SmallCap indices were up 0.52 per cent and 0.11 per cent, respectively.

The initial outperformance of mid- and small-cap stocks indicates that the improvement in sentiment extended beyond the benchmark-heavy large-cap universe.

However, investors will need to monitor whether the broader-market gains sustain through the session, particularly after the recent volatility seen across domestic equities.

Orient Cables Makes Strong Market Debut

Orient Cables made an impressive debut on the stock exchanges on Monday.

The company's shares opened at ₹450 on the NSE, representing a premium of ₹178, or 65.44 per cent, over its issue price of ₹272.

The strong listing reflects robust investor demand for the issue and places the stock among the notable market debutants of the session. Investors will now track whether the stock can sustain its opening gains as trading volumes increase.

Gold and Silver Move Lower in Domestic Market

Domestic gold and silver prices moved lower in early trade despite gains in international precious-metal markets.

International gold prices rose after weaker-than-expected jobs data prompted traders to reduce expectations of further US Federal Reserve rate hikes. The changing interest-rate outlook supported global precious metals.

The divergence between domestic and international prices highlights the influence of currency movements and local market factors on precious-metal pricing.

Global Cues Remain Key for Indian Markets

Global developments are likely to remain a major driver for Indian equities through the trading session.

The easing of monetary-tightening concerns has improved global risk sentiment, but investors will continue to watch US economic indicators, Federal Reserve policy expectations, bond yields, crude oil prices and movements in the US dollar.

For domestic investors, the direction of foreign institutional flows and the performance of global markets will also remain important in determining whether the current recovery can extend further.

Market Outlook

Monday's opening action indicates a clear improvement in risk appetite, supported by positive global cues, a sharp fall in India VIX and strong participation from banking and financial stocks. The Nifty's move above 22,600 and the Sensex's gain of more than 600 points reflect strong early momentum.

Banking, PSU banks, metals, oil and gas and chemical stocks are currently providing leadership, while IT and pharma remain relatively weak. A sustained hold above the 22,600 zone could keep the short-term sentiment constructive, but traders should watch whether the index can maintain these gains as the session progresses.

With volatility falling sharply, the immediate market focus will shift towards global cues, institutional flows, sectoral rotation and upcoming economic developments. For investors, the key question now is whether Monday's strong opening develops into a sustained broader-market recovery or remains an early-session rebound.
