Domestic sales climb 10.9% while exports rise 10.4%; September becomes Hyundai India's strongest-ever month as the automaker enters the festive season with solid sales momentum
Hyundai Motor India Ltd reported its highest-ever monthly total sales in September 2026, with combined domestic sales and exports reaching 77,916 units, marking a 10.8% year-on-year increase.
The September performance surpassed Hyundai Motor India's previous monthly sales record achieved in July 2026 and represents a strong start to the second half of the financial year. Domestic sales increased 10.9% year-on-year to 57,166 units, while exports rose 10.4% to 20,750 units.
Hyundai Motor India Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg said the company had closed September with its highest-ever total monthly sales and described the double-digit growth as a strong performance across both domestic and export markets.
Domestic Market Remains the Main Growth Engine
Domestic sales of 57,166 units accounted for the majority of Hyundai India's September volumes.
The 10.9% year-on-year increase indicates continued demand for the company's passenger-vehicle portfolio despite heightened competition in India's automobile market.
The domestic market has also shown strong momentum in recent months. In August, Hyundai recorded domestic sales of 54,396 units, a 23.6% year-on-year increase and its highest-ever sales for an August month. Total August sales, including exports, stood at 65,796 units, up 8.8% year-on-year.
The sequential improvement in September total volumes therefore comes after a strong August performance, providing Hyundai with momentum going into the important festive-sales period.
Exports Cross 20,000 Units
Hyundai's September exports rose 10.4% year-on-year to 20,750 units, making international markets an important contributor to the monthly record.
The company's export business has become an increasingly significant part of its manufacturing and sales strategy. Hyundai Motor India's FY2026 annual report showed that exports accounted for roughly 24.5% of total sales in FY26, with 1,90,125 vehicles exported during the year.
The company has positioned India as an important manufacturing and export hub serving emerging markets.
Strong export growth provides Hyundai with a broader demand base beyond the domestic market, although international sales remain exposed to currency movements, geopolitical developments, freight costs and conditions in individual overseas markets.
September Record Follows Strong July Performance
Hyundai had previously reported its then-highest-ever monthly total sales of 75,360 units in July 2026, representing 25.4% year-on-year growth.
July domestic sales stood at 54,210 units, while exports accounted for the balance.
September's 77,916-unit performance therefore represents another new monthly peak and indicates that the company's volume momentum has remained relatively strong despite fluctuations in the broader automobile market.
The company has now established a series of strong monthly performances rather than relying on a single exceptional month.
Product Portfolio Supports Volume Growth
Hyundai's product portfolio spans hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and electric vehicles, with SUVs representing an important part of the company's positioning in the Indian market.
The company has been expanding its SUV and technology offerings while also strengthening its alternative-powertrain portfolio.
Hyundai's India range includes products such as the Creta, Venue, Exter, Verna and other passenger vehicles, while its EV portfolio currently includes the IONIQ 5 and CRETA Electric. The company has also been working to strengthen the charging ecosystem around electric mobility.
In September, Hyundai announced bookings for the upcoming BAYON, adding another product to its future India portfolio.
Pune Plant Strengthens Manufacturing Capacity
Hyundai Motor India's manufacturing footprint has also expanded with the commencement of operations at its Pune plant.
The company described the Pune facility as an important part of its future growth strategy. The plant also produced the new Venue, which Hyundai has identified as a key growth product.
The expansion gives Hyundai additional manufacturing capacity and greater flexibility to respond to demand across different vehicle categories.
Higher capacity utilisation could become increasingly important if domestic and export volumes continue to expand.
Financial Base Remains Important
The September sales record comes against the backdrop of a large existing operating base.
For FY2025-26, Hyundai Motor India reported revenue from operations of ₹70,763.3 crore, up 2.3% year-on-year. EBITDA stood at ₹9,547.5 crore, while profit after tax was ₹5,431.5 crore.
The company's FY26 total sales stood at 7,75,031 units, including 5,84,906 domestic units and 1,90,125 exports.
This means September's 77,916-unit performance was equivalent to around 10% of Hyundai India's entire FY26 sales volume in a single month.
Competitive Environment Remains Intense
The strong September numbers come at a time when India's passenger-vehicle industry remains highly competitive.
Automakers are competing through new model launches, discounts, financing schemes, SUV offerings, technology upgrades and electric vehicles.
The September sales data from individual manufacturers will provide a broader picture of the industry's performance. For Hyundai, sustaining double-digit growth will depend on its ability to maintain market share while protecting margins amid rising competition.
Input costs, commodity prices, exchange rates and promotional spending will also remain important factors for profitability.
EV Strategy Becomes Increasingly Important
Electric vehicles are another important part of Hyundai's longer-term strategy in India.
The company has been expanding its EV portfolio while simultaneously investing in charging infrastructure. In September, Hyundai announced the installation of 120 kW DC fast public charging stations in New Delhi as part of its efforts to strengthen India's EV ecosystem.
The company currently offers the IONIQ 5 in the premium EV segment and the CRETA Electric in the mainstream SUV category.
As India's EV market expands, Hyundai's ability to balance internal-combustion vehicles, hybrids or alternative powertrains and pure EVs will increasingly influence its competitive position.
Festive Season Could Provide Further Demand Support
September's record comes just ahead of India's key festive automobile-sales period.
The September-October-November period traditionally receives greater consumer attention as buyers bring forward vehicle purchases around major festivals and promotional campaigns.
For Hyundai, the combination of a refreshed product portfolio, expanded production capacity and recent sales momentum provides a strong operating base going into the festive season.
However, actual demand will depend on consumer sentiment, financing costs, vehicle availability and competitive pricing.
What Investors Should Watch
For investors tracking Hyundai Motor India, the next focus will be whether the September sales record translates into sustained quarterly volume growth and improved financial performance.
Key indicators will include:
-
Domestic market share and monthly wholesale volumes
-
SUV sales and new-model contribution
-
Export growth and geographic diversification
-
Capacity utilisation at the Pune and existing manufacturing facilities
-
EV volumes and charging-infrastructure expansion
-
Average selling prices and discounts
-
Raw-material and currency costs
-
Operating margins and profitability
A sustained increase in volumes would be more significant for investors than a single month's record because profitability ultimately depends on the relationship between sales growth, pricing, costs and operating leverage.
Market Outlook
Hyundai Motor India's September performance provides a positive operating signal, with 77,916 total units representing the company's highest-ever monthly sales and both domestic and export markets delivering double-digit year-on-year growth.
The immediate focus will shift to the sustainability of this momentum during the festive season. Strong domestic demand, rising exports and better utilisation of manufacturing capacity could support revenue growth, while competition, promotional intensity, commodity prices and the pace of EV adoption will remain important variables.
The September record also strengthens the importance of Hyundai's expanded manufacturing footprint and new-product pipeline. If the company can maintain elevated volumes while protecting margins, the recent sales momentum could provide a stronger foundation for the remainder of FY27.
