IFCI and New India Assurance rallied sharply ahead of the NSE IPO before giving up a large part of their gains; analysts identify key support and resistance levels for both stocks
Shares of IFCI and New India Assurance Company (NIACL) have experienced a sharp two-month roller-coaster ride, with both stocks witnessing strong rallies ahead of the much-awaited NSE initial public offering before undergoing steep corrections.
The two companies attracted particular market attention because of their direct and indirect exposure to NSE. NIACL held a direct stake in NSE, while IFCI had an indirect exposure through its subsidiary, Stock Holding Corporation of India (SHCIL).
The NSE IPO opened for subscription on September 17, while the exchange made its stock-market debut on September 24.
Against this backdrop, both IFCI and NIACL experienced substantial gains followed by equally sharp corrections, prompting investors to reassess their technical setup after the NSE listing.
IFCI Surged 53% Before Giving Up Most of Its Gains
IFCI witnessed one of the sharpest moves during the period under review.
The stock rose from ₹70.12 on July 24 to a record high of ₹107.50 on September 4, representing a gain of approximately 53.3 per cent.
However, the rally was followed by an equally sharp reversal.
IFCI fell to ₹73.01 on September 16, losing around 32 per cent from its September peak in just seven trading sessions.
The correction brought the stock close to the levels from which its earlier rally had started.
On Thursday, after NSE's listing, IFCI remained under pressure and was trading around ₹75.91, down approximately 4.4 per cent on the BSE.
NIACL Also Witnessed a Sharp Reversal
New India Assurance followed a broadly similar pattern.
NIACL climbed from around ₹173 on July 24 to ₹242.60 on September 7, translating into a gain of approximately 40 per cent.
The stock subsequently underwent a steep correction, falling to ₹179 on September 16.
That represented a decline of around 26.2 per cent from its September peak.
On Thursday, NIACL was trading around ₹184.50, down approximately 3.5 per cent on the BSE.
The timing of the two stocks' sharp reversals was notable because the NSE IPO opened for subscription immediately after the September 16 lows.
NSE Stake Sale Was a Key Market Focus
The NSE connection was an important factor behind investor attention towards both companies.
NIACL reduced its NSE holding by offering approximately 1.05 crore shares in the IPO, representing around one-third of its earlier stake.
IFCI's exposure was indirect through Stock Holding Corporation of India. SHCIL sold roughly half of its NSE holding, amounting to approximately 61.75 lakh shares, through the IPO.
The monetisation of NSE holdings brought greater visibility to the value of these investments and contributed to increased market interest in the companies.
However, the sharp price movements in IFCI and NIACL also demonstrated how quickly market expectations can change around large corporate events and asset monetisation opportunities.
IFCI Technical Setup
Technical analysts are closely watching IFCI after the stock's sharp correction from its September high.
Om Mehra, technical research analyst at SAMCO Securities, said IFCI continues to trade around key moving averages positioned between ₹76 and ₹86.
According to Mehra, the stock has formed a base around ₹72-74, and holding this zone would help keep the broader technical structure intact.
A sustained close above ₹80, he said, would represent an initial step towards recovery, with the ₹85-86 region emerging as the next important hurdle.
The levels are based on technical analysis and can change as the stock's price and trading volumes evolve.
₹72-74 Emerges as an Important IFCI Zone
The ₹72-74 area has become particularly important following the stock's rapid decline from ₹107.50.
A sustained hold above this zone could indicate that selling pressure is stabilising, while a decisive break below it could weaken the technical structure further.
Laxmikant Shukla, technical analyst at YES Securities, also highlighted the importance of the stock's moving averages.
He pointed to the 100-day moving average around ₹76 as a significant support level.
According to Shukla, the recent rebound from the 100-DMA indicates renewed buying interest, while IFCI's position above its 20-week moving average points towards an improvement in the weekly trend structure.
Analyst Sees ₹100 as Potential IFCI Target
From a trading perspective, Shukla sees ₹100 as a potential upside target for IFCI provided the stock sustains above ₹68.
This level represents a technical assessment rather than a fundamental valuation estimate.
For traders, the key consideration will therefore be whether IFCI can maintain the support zones identified by the analysts and subsequently move through the ₹80 and ₹85-86 resistance areas.
NIACL Stabilises Near 50-DMA
New India Assurance's technical structure has also attracted attention following its steep correction.
Shukla said NIACL appeared to have stabilised around its 50-day moving average, located near ₹179.
According to the analyst, a sustained move above ₹201 could open the possibility of a directional move towards the ₹210-218 range.
The stock's ability to hold its 50-DMA will therefore remain an important technical indicator in the near term.
₹196 Resistance Could Limit Recovery
Mehra identified approximately ₹196 as an immediate resistance level for NIACL.
He maintained a "Neutral to slightly positive" technical view as long as the stock sustains above ₹185 on a closing basis.
The difference between the ₹185 support area and ₹196 resistance zone gives traders a relatively clear range to monitor following the recent correction.
A sustained move beyond the resistance levels could change the short-term technical structure, while weakness below key support levels could indicate renewed selling pressure.
NIACL RSI Shows a Neutral Setup
Momentum indicators are also being monitored.
Mehra noted that NIACL's Relative Strength Index was around 50, below its signal line near 55.
The RSI reading suggests a broadly neutral momentum setup, although the direction of the indicator was gradually becoming more supportive.
Trading volumes, however, remained below average, suggesting that stronger buying participation had yet to emerge decisively.
Volume will therefore be an important confirmation indicator if the stock attempts to move above its immediate resistance levels.
NSE IPO Changes the Market Narrative
The NSE IPO was an important event for both stocks because their holdings in the exchange provided investors with a direct or indirect link to one of India's most valuable financial-market businesses.
The listing of NSE provides greater transparency around the market value of the exchange and allows investors to assess the value of related holdings more closely.
At the same time, the monetisation of NSE shares by NIACL and SHCIL changes the composition of their respective investment portfolios.
The market will therefore focus not only on the value realised from the stake sales but also on how the proceeds and remaining holdings affect the companies' financial positions.
Sharp Rallies Highlight the Importance of Volatility
The two-month price action in IFCI and NIACL illustrates how quickly market sentiment can change around high-profile corporate events.
Both stocks recorded substantial gains before giving up much of those advances within a matter of days.
Such volatility can be influenced by expectations surrounding asset values, corporate actions, market flows and technical trading levels.
The subsequent corrections also highlight the difference between a strong price rally and the ability of a stock to sustain those gains over a longer period.
What Investors Will Watch
For IFCI, the ₹72-74 base highlighted by SAMCO Securities and the ₹76 region identified by YES Securities will remain important technical areas. On the upside, traders will monitor ₹80 followed by ₹85-86.
For NIACL, the ₹179 region around its 50-DMA is an important support area, while ₹185 is another level highlighted in the technical assessment. On the upside, ₹196 and ₹201 are key levels, followed by the ₹210-218 zone identified by YES Securities.
Apart from technical levels, investors will continue to monitor the financial impact of the NSE stake transactions, the value of remaining investments and broader market conditions.
Market Outlook
IFCI and NIACL have both experienced substantial volatility around the NSE IPO, with their sharp pre-IPO rallies followed by steep corrections.
For IFCI, analysts are focusing on the ₹72-76 support region and resistance around ₹80-86, while for NIACL, the ₹179-185 area and resistance between ₹196 and ₹201 remain important technical reference points.
The next phase of price action will depend on whether the stocks can establish stable bases after their recent corrections. NSE-related developments may remain relevant, but broader market sentiment, trading volumes and the companies' underlying financial performance will also influence the sustainability of any recovery.
