Steel stocks gain as domestic prices strengthen, demand improves and raw-material availability supports the outlook; Motilal Oswal says pricing discipline will be critical for margins in H2FY27

Metal stocks were in focus on Wednesday as the Nifty Metal index gained more than 1%, with steel companies leading the sectoral advance. Steel Authority of India (SAIL), Welspun Corp, Vedanta and Lloyds Metals and Energy were among the prominent gainers, rising as much as 4% during intraday trading.

At around 11:18 AM, the Nifty Metal index was up 1.4% at 13,172.60 on the National Stock Exchange, compared with a 0.40% rise in the Nifty 50. The metal index had touched a 52-week high of 13,931.35 on June 15, 2026.

Other major steel and metal counters, including Jindal Steel, Hindalco Industries, Jindal Stainless, Tata Steel and JSW Steel, also traded higher, with gains ranging between 1% and 2%.

SAIL Leads the Steel Stock Rally

Shares of state-owned SAIL climbed around 4.5% to ₹181.83 during intraday trading on the NSE, accompanied by heavy trading volumes. More than 13 million shares changed hands across the NSE and BSE during the session.

The stock remains below its 52-week high of ₹209.70, recorded on May 14, 2026.

A key recent development for SAIL was India Ratings and Research's September 3 upgrade of the company's long-term issuer rating and debt instruments to ‘IND AA+’ with a Stable outlook from ‘IND AA’.

SAIL's Earnings Outlook Gets Support From Cost Reduction

SAIL's operating performance has shown signs of improvement, with EBITDA strengthening during the June 2026 quarter.

According to India Ratings, the improvement is supported by the company's cost-reduction initiatives and could remain above historical levels.

The expected operationalisation of the Tasra and Rowghat mines over FY27-FY28 is another factor being monitored. Increased access to captive raw materials could improve raw-material availability and support profitability.

The mines could also provide an opportunity for SAIL to generate additional revenue through the sale of surplus iron ore.

Capacity Expansion Could Drive Future Volumes

SAIL is also expected to ramp up production capacity over FY27-FY31.

Higher capacity and greater raw-material availability could support an increase in sales volumes over the medium term.

However, India Ratings has identified delays in the operationalisation of the Tasra and Rowghat mines as an important monitorable. Any delay could affect the expected improvement in raw-material availability and the company's profitability assumptions.

Domestic Steel Prices Strengthen

One of the important factors supporting steel stocks has been the sharp increase in domestic steel prices.

Despite the seasonally softer June quarter, steel prices across product categories strengthened, supported by lean channel inventories following maintenance shutdowns, improved consumption during July-August and higher input costs.

The improvement in demand after the April-May period has also provided support to market conditions.

Higher steel realisations can directly benefit producers, although the sustainability of margins will depend on the relationship between selling prices and raw-material costs.

Tata Steel in Focus Ahead of Q2FY27

Motilal Oswal Financial Services expects Tata Steel's India business to report strong earnings for the September quarter, or Q2FY27, following the improvement in domestic steel prices.

The brokerage expects favourable pricing and resilient domestic demand to support the company's Indian operations.

Tata Steel's ongoing capacity expansion is another factor highlighted by the brokerage as it evaluates the company's long-term growth prospects.

Pricing Discipline Critical for Margins

While higher steel prices are positive for producers, Motilal Oswal has cautioned that industry pricing discipline will remain important for sustaining margins.

The brokerage expects the impact of current cost inflation to become more visible with a lag during H2FY27.

If input costs continue to rise faster than steel realisations, producers could face margin pressure. Conversely, sustained pricing discipline across the industry could allow companies to preserve a larger portion of the improvement in selling prices.

This makes the balance between steel realisations, raw-material costs and production volumes an important factor for the sector.

Tata Steel's Europe Business Remains a Monitorable

While Motilal Oswal remains constructive on Tata Steel's domestic business, its European operations remain subject to uncertainty.

The brokerage noted that the earnings trajectory of Tata Steel's European business will depend on regulatory developments as well as steel spreads and energy costs.

A gradual stabilisation in the European business could potentially improve earnings visibility, while continued volatility in steel pricing and energy costs could remain a challenge.

Motilal Oswal has reiterated its ‘Buy’ rating on Tata Steel with a sum-of-the-parts-based target price of ₹220.

India's Steel Demand Outlook Remains Strong

India continues to be one of the fastest-growing major steel markets globally.

Data cited from the World Steel Association indicates that India's steel demand is projected to grow 7.4% in 2026 and accelerate to 9.2% in 2027.

The growth outlook is supported by demand from infrastructure, construction, automobiles, capital goods, railways and consumer durables.

The government's continued focus on infrastructure investment is also expected to remain an important structural driver for domestic steel consumption.

Infrastructure Spending Supports Long-Term Demand

India's infrastructure development cycle remains an important demand driver for steel producers.

Projects involving roads, railways, high-speed rail networks, ports, inland waterways and urban infrastructure require significant quantities of steel.

The continued public capital-expenditure cycle could therefore support domestic steel consumption even if some end-user segments experience periodic fluctuations.

The expansion of India's manufacturing and logistics infrastructure could further increase demand from capital goods and engineering industries.

Steel Policy Targets 500 MT Capacity by 2047

India's long-term steel strategy envisages a significant expansion in domestic production capacity.

Under the broader Viksit Bharat vision, the country's steel policy targets production capacity of 500 million tonnes by 2047, with an intermediate capacity milestone of 300 million tonnes by FY2030-31.

The policy also places emphasis on greener steel production, automation, decarbonisation and reducing dependence on imported coking coal.

For domestic steelmakers, this creates both an expansion opportunity and a requirement to invest in technology, efficiency and lower-carbon production processes.

Raw Material Costs Remain a Key Variable

Steel profitability is closely linked to the cost of raw materials such as iron ore and coking coal.

Companies with captive mines can have an advantage during periods of elevated raw-material prices because a larger portion of their requirements can be sourced internally.

For SAIL, the expected operationalisation of the Tasra and Rowghat mines could therefore be significant for future cost management and raw-material security.

At the industry level, changes in global commodity prices, import costs and domestic availability will remain important variables for margins.

What Investors Need to Track

Investors tracking metal and steel companies are likely to focus on several indicators over the coming quarters.

These include domestic steel realisations, coking-coal and iron-ore costs, capacity utilisation, production volumes, inventory levels and export-import trends.

For individual companies, the pace of capacity expansion, debt levels, captive raw-material availability and cost-reduction measures will also be important.

The sustainability of current steel prices will remain particularly relevant because higher realisations can support earnings, while a sharp correction could reduce margin benefits.

Market Outlook

The latest rally in metal stocks reflects a combination of stronger domestic steel prices, improving consumption trends, raw-material considerations and expectations of sustained infrastructure-led demand.

SAIL has additional company-specific factors in focus, including improving EBITDA, cost-reduction initiatives, the proposed operationalisation of the Tasra and Rowghat mines and its planned capacity expansion.

For Tata Steel, Motilal Oswal expects the Indian business to benefit from favourable steel pricing and resilient demand, while its European operations remain dependent on regulatory developments, steel spreads and energy costs.

The broader outlook for Indian steel demand remains structurally positive, with infrastructure, automotive, capital goods and railway spending providing multiple demand drivers. However, margin sustainability will depend on pricing discipline and the trajectory of input costs, particularly as current cost inflation could become more visible during H2FY27.
