Over 39 million shares change hands; stock remains sharply higher from its IPO price despite Monday’s decline

Shares of Lenskart Solutions came under selling pressure on Monday, September 21, as heavy trading volumes and reported block-deal activity triggered a sharp intraday decline. The stock slipped around 3 per cent to ₹683 on the NSE before recovering partially, with more than 39 million shares changing hands within the first hour of trade.

The unusually high volume has drawn investor attention because the number of shares traded represented a significant portion of Lenskart's total equity, pointing to a large transaction involving institutional or other significant shareholders.

39.18 Million Shares Change Hands

According to NSE data cited in the market report, 39.18 million Lenskart shares, representing approximately 2.25 per cent of the company's total equity, had changed hands by 9:27 AM.

The identities of the buyers and sellers were not immediately available at the time of the report.

The scale of the transaction was significantly higher than normal trading activity, making the stock one of the key names to watch in Monday's session.

Reports indicated that a block deal worth approximately ₹2,047.4 crore was expected in Lenskart Solutions, with Platinum Jasmine A 2018 Trust reportedly offering shares at a floor price of ₹682.45 per share.

The reported floor price represented a discount of around 3.5 per cent to Lenskart's previous closing price of ₹707.20.

Stock Falls After Recent Record High

The selling comes shortly after Lenskart shares touched a record high of ₹725.

At ₹683 during Monday's early decline, the stock was still trading substantially above its listing-day low of ₹355.70 on the BSE.

Lenskart made its stock-market debut on November 10, 2025, at an issue price of ₹402 per share. Even after Monday's decline, the stock remained significantly above its IPO price, highlighting the strong re-rating it has experienced since listing.

The sharp rise in the stock has also increased the significance of large shareholder transactions, as investors assess whether block deals represent portfolio rebalancing, profit booking or changes in institutional ownership.

Strong 2026 Performance

Despite Monday's decline, Lenskart has significantly outperformed the broader market so far in calendar 2026.

The stock was reported to have gained around 58 per cent during the year, compared with declines of approximately 6.3 per cent in the Nifty 200 and 10.5 per cent in the Nifty 50 over the same period.

The divergence highlights the company's strong market performance even as broader Indian equities have faced pressure from global uncertainty, crude prices, foreign portfolio outflows and currency movements.

However, the sharp appreciation also means valuation and earnings expectations have become increasingly important factors for investors.

Why the Block Deal Matters

A large block transaction does not necessarily indicate a change in the underlying business outlook.

Block deals are often executed by large shareholders or institutions for a variety of reasons, including portfolio rebalancing, partial profit booking, changes in asset allocation or fund-level liquidity requirements.

For existing shareholders, however, such transactions can temporarily increase the available supply of shares in the market and create selling pressure.

The discount reportedly offered in the transaction also became an important reference point for market participants, particularly after Lenskart had recently traded close to its record high.

India's Eyewear Market Offers Long-Term Growth Potential

Beyond the immediate block-deal activity, Lenskart's investment story is linked closely to the growth of India's organised eyewear market.

According to ICICI Securities, India's eyewear market could grow at a compound annual growth rate of around 13 per cent between FY25 and FY30, reaching approximately ₹1.48 trillion.

The brokerage cited increasing awareness of eye care, the rising prevalence of refractive errors and the shift towards organised eyewear retailers as key growth drivers.

The potential expansion of India's organised eyewear market provides a structural growth opportunity for companies with established retail networks, manufacturing capabilities and strong consumer brands.

Rising Refractive Errors Could Support Demand

One of the structural drivers highlighted by analysts is the increasing prevalence of refractive errors.

According to the estimates cited in the report, the proportion of India's population affected by refractive errors could rise to around 62 per cent by FY30 from approximately 43 per cent in FY20.

The rate is expected to be particularly high among teenagers and children, where the estimate could reach around 75 per cent by FY30.

Increasing screen exposure, greater awareness of vision correction and improving access to eye-care products could contribute to higher demand for spectacles and related products.

Lenskart Continues to Expand Its Retail Network

Lenskart's physical retail presence remains a central part of its business strategy.

The company had around 2,725 stores in India as of Q1FY27, according to the analyst assessment cited in the report.

The company is also expanding its manufacturing capacity. Its existing domestic manufacturing capacity stands at approximately 25 million units, while another 50-million-unit facility is expected to commence operations in Hyderabad.

A combination of manufacturing scale and retail expansion could allow the company to increase product availability while maintaining control over a larger part of its supply chain.

Focus on Increasing Market Share

Analysts cited in the report believe Lenskart has the potential to increase its share of India's eyewear market.

The company's vertically integrated model, combination of physical stores and digital channels, and broad product portfolio are among the factors supporting this outlook.

The company currently has an estimated market share of around 5 per cent in the relevant market, according to the analyst assessment cited in the report.

Expansion into smaller cities and additional retail locations could provide another avenue for growth as organised optical retail penetration increases.

Wide Price Range Expands Customer Base

Lenskart's product portfolio covers a broad range of price points, with products reportedly ranging from around $5 to $500.

This allows the company to target different consumer segments, from value-conscious customers to premium eyewear buyers.

The broad pricing strategy can also support cross-selling and customer retention as consumers move between product categories and price segments.

Manufacturing Could Support Scalability

Domestic manufacturing is another important component of the company's growth strategy.

The planned expansion in manufacturing capacity could help Lenskart support its growing store network and potentially improve supply-chain efficiency.

Greater manufacturing scale can also provide the company with more control over product development, inventory availability and product launches.

However, the benefits of capacity expansion will ultimately depend on utilisation, demand growth and the company's ability to maintain healthy returns on the capital invested.

Analysts See Free Cash Flow Potential

ICICI Securities expects Lenskart to generate cumulative free cash flow of approximately ₹5,300 crore between FY26 and FY29, according to the report.

Strong cash generation could provide the company with additional financial flexibility to fund store expansion, manufacturing investments and other growth initiatives.

For investors, free cash flow is particularly important for a growth company because it provides an indication of how much internally generated cash remains after operating and capital expenditure requirements.

Brokerage Initiates Coverage

ICICI Securities initiated coverage on Lenskart with a 'Buy' rating and a target price of ₹850, according to the report.

The brokerage reportedly valued the company at 43 times FY28 estimated EV/EBITDA.

The valuation reflects expectations of sustained growth in India's eyewear market, continued store expansion and improving operating scale.

Investors should note that brokerage targets represent analysts' estimates and assumptions rather than guaranteed future share prices.

Insurance-Led Eye Care Could Become an Additional Driver

Another potential demand driver is the emergence of insurance-linked eye-care programmes.

Jefferies analysts noted that insurance-led eye-care initiatives could improve affordability and encourage greater adoption of vision-care products.

If such programmes expand, they could potentially bring more consumers into the organised optical-care ecosystem.

The impact, however, would depend on the scale of coverage, consumer adoption and the structure of such programmes.

Optical Retail Market Remains Underpenetrated

India's optical retail infrastructure remains relatively underpenetrated compared with several other consumer categories.

Management has reportedly highlighted the relatively low number of opticians in India compared with other areas of organised retail.

This creates a long runway for expansion, particularly as organised players attempt to establish stores in cities and towns that currently have limited access to modern optical retail.

For Lenskart, the opportunity lies not only in taking market share from existing organised competitors but also in expanding the overall organised market.

Valuation and Supply Overhang Remain Key Factors

While the long-term growth opportunity remains significant, investors also need to monitor valuation and shareholder-selling risks.

The stock's strong appreciation since its IPO means expectations around future earnings growth are already an important part of its valuation.

A large block transaction can create temporary supply pressure, particularly if other investors interpret the deal as an opportunity for existing shareholders to monetise their holdings.

At the same time, sustained business growth and improving cash generation could remain important factors determining the stock's longer-term valuation.

What Investors Should Track

Following the block-deal activity, investors are likely to focus on several factors:

  • Final confirmation of the block-deal participants

  • Number of shares ultimately transferred

  • Any change in institutional or promoter-linked holdings

  • Store expansion during FY27

  • Manufacturing-capacity utilisation

  • Revenue growth and operating margins

  • Free cash-flow generation

  • Same-store sales and customer growth

  • India's organised eyewear-market expansion

  • Valuation relative to expected earnings growth

These factors will help determine whether the current weakness remains primarily a trading-related reaction or develops into a broader change in investor sentiment.

Market Outlook

Lenskart's Monday decline comes against the backdrop of unusually high trading volumes and reported block-deal activity involving more than 2 per cent of the company's equity. The immediate price pressure therefore needs to be viewed separately from the company's underlying operating performance.

The company's long-term growth narrative remains linked to the expansion of India's organised eyewear market, increasing eye-care awareness, rising refractive errors, store expansion and manufacturing capacity.

At the same time, the stock's substantial appreciation since its IPO places greater importance on earnings delivery, cash generation and valuation. The reported block transaction also makes shareholder ownership changes an important near-term factor to monitor.

For investors, the key areas to watch are the final details of the block deal, subsequent trading volumes, institutional ownership changes and the company's operating performance over the coming quarters.
