Indian Markets Extend Gains as Falling Crude Prices Ease Inflation Concerns

Indian equity benchmarks traded higher in Monday’s morning session as easing crude oil prices provided some relief to investors worried about inflation, corporate costs and economic growth. The Sensex gained more than 400 points, while the Nifty50 moved above the 23,350 level.

At around 10:00 AM, the Sensex was up 436.20 points, or 0.59%, at 74,731.16, while the Nifty50 gained 50.05 points, or 0.21%, to 23,396.45. The broader market, however, remained relatively subdued, with the Nifty MidCap 100 and SmallCap 100 trading marginally lower in early trade.

Moneycontrol reported that the Sensex was up nearly 478 points around 9:30 AM, while the Nifty had moved above 23,400, with easing crude prices emerging as one of the key supports for sentiment.

Crude Oil Prices Provide Relief

The decline in crude oil prices has emerged as an important positive factor for Indian equities. Brent crude slipped towards the $101-$103 per barrel range on Monday as markets assessed the possibility of recovering Saudi Arabian shipments.

Moneycontrol reported Brent at around $103.06 per barrel early Monday, down 0.78%, while WTI was around $99.41. The decline came despite continued geopolitical risks in West Asia.

Lower crude prices are particularly relevant for India because the country imports a large share of its crude requirement. A sustained decline in oil prices can ease pressure on inflation, the trade deficit and input costs for several industries.

However, geopolitical developments remain a key risk. Any fresh disruption to supplies or shipping routes could quickly reverse the recent decline in crude prices.

Pharma Sector Outperforms

The Nifty Pharma index emerged among the stronger sectoral performers in Monday’s session, gaining around 1%. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Laurus Labs were among the stocks supporting the sector.

Pharma stocks have also benefited from their relatively defensive characteristics during periods of market uncertainty. Investors continue to track export trends, regulatory developments, US healthcare demand and company-specific earnings developments across the sector.

The Nifty FMCG and Realty indices also traded among the stronger sectors, while IT and PSU banks remained under pressure.

IT Sector Underperforms

The technology sector remained one of the weakest areas of the market during early trade. The Nifty IT index underperformed as investors continued to assess the implications of elevated global interest rates, currency movements and the broader outlook for technology spending.

Higher US interest rates can influence valuations of technology companies because a significant portion of their expected earnings lies further into the future. The recent Federal Reserve rate hike has therefore added another factor for investors to monitor.

Tata Group Stocks in Focus

Most Tata Group stocks advanced during early trade amid reports surrounding Tata Sons, Tata Trusts and the potential continuation of N Chandrasekaran as Tata Sons chairman.

The Tata Sons board is expected to deliberate on its response to the Reserve Bank of India’s rejection of its request for exemption from mandatory listing requirements. The governance and regulatory developments have therefore remained an important stock-specific theme for Tata Group companies.

Tata Capital Shares Trade Lower

Tata Capital shares traded lower despite Emkay maintaining an ‘Add’ rating following its post-management meeting, according to the market update provided in the trading session.

The brokerage reportedly retained a target price of ₹410, while the stock was trading around ₹352 at the time of the report. Investors are focusing on the company’s growth outlook, asset quality and financial performance as it continues to develop its lending franchise.

Emmvee Photovoltaic Gains 8%

Shares of Emmvee Photovoltaic Power jumped around 8% in Monday’s session after reports indicated that Jefferies maintained a ‘Buy’ rating and a target price of ₹440 per share.

The movement comes amid continued investor interest in renewable energy and solar-related companies. Domestic manufacturing capacity, government support and growing renewable-energy investment remain important themes for the sector.

Concord Biotech Rises as Board Considers Bonus Issue

Concord Biotech shares gained more than 3% to touch ₹1,539.50 on the NSE after the company announced that its board would consider a proposal for a bonus share issue.

Corporate actions such as bonus issues can attract increased trading interest, although investors generally assess them alongside the company’s earnings, valuation and long-term business prospects.

Broader Markets Remain Mixed

The broader market did not participate as strongly as the benchmark indices. The Nifty MidCap 100 and SmallCap 100 traded marginally lower during early deals.

The mixed performance indicates that the morning recovery was not entirely broad-based. Investors remained selective, with sector rotation playing an important role in determining individual stock performance.

FII Buying Offers Some Support

Foreign institutional investors turned net buyers in Indian equities on Friday after seven consecutive sessions of selling, purchasing shares worth around ₹599 crore. Domestic institutional investors also remained buyers, investing more than ₹1,000 crore during the session, according to Moneycontrol.

A continuation of domestic institutional buying, combined with a sustained return of foreign flows, could influence market breadth in the near term. However, global interest rates, crude prices and geopolitical developments remain important variables.

Rupee Gains as Crude Eases

The Indian rupee opened marginally stronger at around ₹95.81 against the US dollar on Monday, compared with ₹95.87 in the previous session. The improvement came as Brent crude prices eased from recent highs.

Currency movements remain closely linked to crude prices because higher oil prices can increase India’s import bill and put pressure on the rupee. Traders are also monitoring potential Reserve Bank of India intervention if the currency faces renewed depreciation pressure.

Global Markets Provide a Mixed Backdrop

Asian equities traded higher on Monday, supported partly by gains in semiconductor stocks as demand linked to artificial intelligence continued to support the technology segment. South Korea’s Kospi was among the stronger markets.

US markets ended mixed on Friday. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.40%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.17%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.18%.

Global investors are also assessing the impact of the US Federal Reserve’s latest interest-rate decision. The Fed recently raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points, keeping global bond yields and liquidity conditions in focus.

Nifty Technical Levels

The Nifty’s immediate trading range remains important after the index crossed the 23,400 mark during early Monday trade.

According to market analysis cited by Moneycontrol, 23,400 is an immediate hurdle, while 23,500-23,600 are the next levels to watch on the upside. On the downside, 23,200 is an immediate support area, followed by the 23,100-23,070 zone.

The index had closed Friday at 23,346.40, after gaining 75.80 points, while the Sensex ended at 74,294.96.

Key Stocks in Focus

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Laurus Labs, InterGlobe Aviation and Reliance Industries were among the notable Nifty gainers during early trade.

Tata Capital, Emmvee Photovoltaic Power and Concord Biotech also remained in focus because of company-specific developments.

Meanwhile, Bank of Maharashtra, Bank of India and Central Bank of India were among the weaker names in the PSU banking space.

Market Outlook

The early recovery in Indian equities is being supported by softer crude prices, renewed foreign buying and relatively positive Asian market cues. However, the broader market remains sensitive to developments in West Asia, global interest rates, bond yields and currency movements.

For the Nifty, the 23,400-23,600 zone remains an important area to monitor, while 23,200 and 23,000 could act as key downside reference levels. The direction of crude oil, institutional flows and global risk sentiment is likely to remain crucial for the next phase of market movement.
