Indian Equities Trade Higher Despite Global Rate-Hike Concerns; Nifty IT Under Pressure

Indian stock markets traded higher in early Thursday deals, September 17, with the Sensex gaining around 200 points and the Nifty50 moving closer to the 23,300 mark. Auto and metal shares led sectoral gains, while information technology stocks remained under pressure. The broader market also witnessed buying interest, with mid-cap and small-cap indices advancing.

Sensex, Nifty Extend Gains in Early Trade

At 10:00 AM, the Sensex was up 121.07 points, or 0.16 per cent, at 74,457.52. The Nifty50 gained 65.20 points, or 0.28 per cent, to 23,282.80. The indices traded in a narrow range after a mixed opening, reflecting cautious sentiment in the wake of global market losses.

Bharat Electronics, Bajaj Finance and Eternal were among the leading gainers in the Nifty50 index. HDFC Bank was among the stocks weighing on the Sensex.

Auto and Metal Stocks Outperform

The Nifty Auto index emerged as one of the strongest sectoral performers in early trade. TVS Motor Company, Samvardhana Motherson International and Sona BLW Precision Forgings were among the top gainers in the auto segment.

Metal stocks also advanced, supporting the broader market. The sector's performance came amid a mixed global backdrop, with investors assessing the impact of international interest-rate developments and commodity-market conditions on industrial demand and corporate earnings.

Broader Markets Show Buying Interest

The broader market maintained a positive tone. At 10:00 AM, the Nifty MidCap index rose 0.79 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index gained 0.85 per cent. The advance indicated buying interest beyond the frontline indices, although the sustainability of the move will depend on market breadth and trading volumes through the session.

IT Stocks Remain Under Pressure

Information technology shares underperformed other sectors in early trade. The Nifty IT index declined 0.3 per cent at 9:21 AM, making it the weakest major sectoral index at that point. PSU bank stocks, meanwhile, gained 0.36 per cent.

The divergence between technology and cyclical sectors highlighted the cautious approach among investors as global interest-rate expectations and their implications for corporate borrowing, spending and earnings remained in focus.

Tata Sons Board to Discuss Leadership and IPO Listing

The board of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, was scheduled to meet on Thursday to discuss the company's proposed listing, including whether outgoing Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran should be asked to continue in the role.

The meeting comes amid regulatory discussions around the listing of Tata Sons. Investors will track developments for their implications on the group's corporate structure and governance.

Market Outlook

Indian equities opened with a positive bias, supported by auto and metal stocks and gains in the broader market. However, global rate-hike concerns and weakness in IT shares could keep the market volatile.

The Nifty50's movement around the 23,300 level, sectoral rotation and participation from mid-cap and small-cap stocks will remain important factors to monitor as trading progresses. Investors will also track developments in the IPO market and company-specific news for further direction.
