Government to provide official vehicles and ₹1 lakh monthly support per MLA, while major healthcare, medical education and dairy-sector measures add to the state’s latest policy announcements.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has announced a new support package for all 234 members of the state Assembly, providing government vehicles along with monthly financial assistance for vehicle-related expenses and office support.

The announcement, made in the Assembly on Wednesday, is aimed at improving the ability of legislators to travel across their constituencies, remain accessible to residents and respond more efficiently to public grievances.

The decision came after Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi MLA L E Jothimani raised concerns about the logistical challenges faced by MLAs while carrying out constituency-level responsibilities.

₹75,000 for Vehicle Expenses, ₹25,000 for Office Assistant

Under the new arrangement, every MLA will receive a government vehicle for official and constituency-related duties.

In addition, the government will provide ₹75,000 per month to each MLA towards the salary of a driver, fuel and vehicle maintenance. Another ₹25,000 per month will be provided to hire a secretary or office assistant.

This takes the combined monthly support to ₹1 lakh per MLA.

For all 234 legislators, the two allowances together represent an estimated expenditure of ₹2.34 crore every month, equivalent to nearly ₹28.08 crore annually, excluding the cost associated with providing the government vehicles.

Government Cites Constituency Responsibilities

CM Vijay said elected representatives need to remain closely connected with people in their constituencies and frequently travel across different parts of their areas to understand and resolve local issues.

He also highlighted that a number of legislators in the current Assembly are first-time representatives and come from modest backgrounds. According to the government, providing basic logistical resources could help such MLAs perform their responsibilities more effectively.

The announcement received support from several legislators, with some welcoming the decision as a measure that could improve their ability to serve constituents.

Opposition Questions Additional Expenditure

While the move received support from ruling-party legislators, Opposition members questioned the additional financial burden it could place on the state government.

The main concern centres on the recurring expenditure associated with vehicle-related allowances and office assistance for all 234 MLAs.

₹351 Crore Push for Medical Education

Alongside the MLA support package, the Tamil Nadu government announced several major initiatives in the healthcare and medical education sectors.

The government plans to allocate ₹351 crore to create 6,098 additional seats across medical, nursing and paramedical courses.

The expansion includes additional seats in BSc Nursing, nursing, paramedical programmes and medical education.

The move is expected to increase the availability of trained healthcare professionals and expand opportunities for students seeking careers in the medical sector.

Seven New Government Nursing Colleges

Tamil Nadu will also establish seven new government nursing colleges.

The expansion is aimed at strengthening nursing education infrastructure and increasing the number of trained nurses available to the state’s healthcare system.

₹300 Crore Perambalur Hospital Project

The government has announced plans to construct a 400-bed multispeciality hospital in Perambalur at an estimated cost of ₹300 crore.

The proposed facility is expected to strengthen specialised healthcare infrastructure in the region and provide residents with greater access to advanced medical services.

The project forms part of the broader healthcare expansion announced by the state government.

Health Insurance Cover Raised Fivefold

One of the major welfare announcements is the increase in the annual treatment limit under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.

The coverage limit will be raised from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh.

The expanded coverage is expected to provide greater financial protection to eligible beneficiaries, particularly in cases involving expensive medical procedures and prolonged treatment.

The government has also announced coverage for medical and surgical procedures for transgender persons at selected government hospitals in Chennai, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Chengalpattu, Thiruvarur, Karur and Kanyakumari.

₹471 Crore for Cancer Care

The state has separately announced an allocation of ₹471 crore for strengthening cancer-care facilities.

The funding is expected to support improvements in cancer diagnosis and treatment infrastructure and strengthen specialised healthcare capacity.

Aavin Raises Milk Procurement Price

The government has also announced relief for milk producers through an increase in the procurement price paid by Aavin.

The price has been increased from ₹38 to ₹41 per litre.

The ₹3-per-litre increase is expected to provide additional income support to dairy producers and could encourage continued participation in the organised milk procurement network.

The measure also comes as the government seeks to balance consumer interests with the financial sustainability of the dairy sector.
