Indian markets remain range-bound as investors track US-Iran developments, Strait of Hormuz uncertainty, Q1 earnings and a busy IPO calendar

Indian benchmark indices traded with a cautious bias in Monday's morning session as investors weighed geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the United States and Iran against continued domestic institutional support and a busy Q1 earnings season.

The Nifty 50 remained around the 24,500 mark, while the Sensex recovered from its early lows as buying emerged in select heavyweight stocks. Information technology, private banking and automobile stocks were among the better-performing pockets, while PSU banks, FMCG and metals remained under pressure.

At around 10:00 AM, the Nifty 50 was down 40.25 points, or 0.16 per cent, at 24,530.40, while the Sensex was lower by 125.22 points, or 0.16 per cent, at 78,373.95.

The market subsequently showed signs of recovery, with the Sensex moving closer to the positive territory and the Nifty attempting to regain the 24,550 level.

Geopolitical Uncertainty Keeps Investors Cautious

The major overhang for global and Indian markets remains uncertainty surrounding a possible understanding between the US and Iran over reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait is strategically important for global energy markets, and any disruption to crude oil transportation could quickly influence inflation expectations, bond yields and equity valuations.

For Indian equities, the development is particularly important because India remains highly dependent on imported crude oil. A sustained rise in crude prices could increase input costs for several industries and put pressure on the country's import bill and the rupee.

Consequently, traders are likely to closely track every development from the Middle East during Monday's session.

Nifty Holds 24,500 as IT Stocks Outperform

The Nifty 50 opened almost flat with a negative bias, falling around three points to 24,568 in early trade.

However, buying in IT and selected banking stocks helped limit the downside.

The Nifty IT index gained around 0.5 per cent in the early session, while private banks and automobile stocks also outperformed.

Titan Company, Tech Mahindra and ICICI Bank featured among the prominent gainers in the Nifty 50 basket, while NTPC emerged as one of the notable laggards during the opening phase.

The strength in IT stocks is important because the sector has been under pressure at various points this year amid concerns over global technology spending, AI disruption and uncertain demand in key overseas markets.

Broader Markets Trade Mixed

The broader market showed a mixed trend, indicating that investors remained selective rather than adopting a broad-based risk-on approach.

At around 10 AM:

  • Nifty MidCap 100: Up around 0.21 per cent

  • Nifty SmallCap 100: Down around 0.13 per cent

  • Nifty IT: Among the better-performing sectors

  • Nifty Private Bank: Outperforming

  • Nifty Auto: Positive

  • Nifty PSU Bank: Underperforming

  • FMCG: Marginally lower

  • Metals: Marginally lower

The mixed performance of mid- and small-cap stocks suggests that traders are continuing to differentiate between companies based on earnings quality, valuations and near-term business outlook.

Q1 Earnings Remain the Key Domestic Trigger

The June-quarter earnings season remains one of the most important domestic catalysts for the market.

Several companies are scheduled to announce their Q1 FY27 results on Monday, spanning sectors such as automobiles, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, financial services, industrials, consumer products and technology.

Companies on the results calendar include Amara Raja Energy & Mobility, Astra Microwave Products, AstraZeneca Pharma India, Bosch, Choice International, CMS Info Systems, Dilip Buildcon, Gland Pharma, Hindustan Copper, KEC International, K.P.R. Mill, Linde India, Lloyds Metals & Energy, Lumax Auto Technologies, Info Edge, Patel Engineering, Pitti Engineering, Precision Wires India, Triveni Turbine, TVS Supply Chain Solutions, Wockhardt, Yatharth Hospital and Zee Entertainment Enterprises, among others.

Investors will focus not only on headline profit numbers but also on revenue growth, operating margins, order books, management commentary and FY27 guidance.

Eveready Industries Rises After Q1 Profit Growth

Eveready Industries was among the stocks attracting buying interest in morning trade.

The company's consolidated net profit increased 22.3 per cent year-on-year to ₹37 crore in the April-June quarter, compared with ₹30.2 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Following the earnings announcement, the stock gained around 3.7 per cent in morning trade.

The market reaction highlights the importance investors are currently placing on earnings visibility and profitability improvement during the ongoing results season.

Ceigall India Falls Despite Profit Growth

Infrastructure company Ceigall India moved lower despite reporting growth in quarterly profitability.

The company's consolidated net profit increased 15.2 per cent year-on-year to ₹61.23 crore in Q1 FY27.

Despite the improvement in earnings, the stock declined around 2.45 per cent to an intraday low of ₹325.25 during early trade.

The reaction underlines an important feature of the current market: positive earnings growth alone may not be sufficient to drive stock prices higher if expectations, valuations or forward guidance are already demanding.

Blue Cloud Softech in Focus After $150 Million AI Infrastructure Deal

Small-cap technology company Blue Cloud Softech Solutions emerged as another stock in focus.

According to the company's disclosure cited in market reports, its US subsidiary signed a statement of work valued at $150 million with Malaysia-based SpaceX International for AI infrastructure, cybersecurity, telecommunications and data-centre solutions.

The development adds to the company's focus on artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.

Blue Cloud Softech has previously disclosed initiatives involving AI infrastructure, data centres and international technology partnerships. Market participants, however, are likely to focus on the execution timeline, revenue recognition and profitability impact of the new contract rather than simply the headline order value.

Domestic Institutional Investors Continue to Provide Support

One of the strongest structural supports for Indian equities remains domestic institutional buying.

Exchange data cited in Monday's market coverage showed that Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) have recorded equity inflows exceeding ₹5 trillion for three consecutive calendar years.

This sustained domestic participation has become increasingly important because it can help absorb periods of foreign portfolio selling and provide liquidity during market corrections.

The domestic-flow cushion remains a key reason why Indian equities have demonstrated resilience despite bouts of global volatility.

IPO Market Enters Another Busy Week

The primary market is also keeping investor attention firmly on equities.

Two mainboard IPOs — Dhoot Transmission and Molbio Diagnostics — opened for subscription on Monday.

Dhoot Transmission is looking to raise around ₹3,066.89 crore, while Molbio Diagnostics is targeting approximately ₹939.70 crore.

Molbio Diagnostics' IPO is scheduled to remain open from August 10 to August 12, with the price band fixed at ₹768–807 per share.

The primary market is therefore competing for investor liquidity at a time when the secondary market itself remains sensitive to valuations and global risk factors.

Other IPOs in Focus

The IPO calendar remains active, with:

  • LEAP India entering its second day of subscription

  • Technocraft Ventures entering its second day

  • Optimystix Entertainment entering its second day

  • LAPL Automotive entering the final day of subscription

The simultaneous presence of several offerings means investors are likely to remain selective regarding issue valuations, business quality, growth prospects and the intended use of IPO proceeds.

Molbio Diagnostics Attracts Attention

Molbio Diagnostics is particularly notable because it operates in the point-of-care molecular diagnostics segment through its Truenat platform.

The company has reported strong growth in profitability over recent years, although investors will need to assess the valuation being demanded in the IPO against the company's future growth potential.

Its IPO comprises a fresh issue and an offer-for-sale component, making the quality of earnings, cash generation and long-term expansion plans important factors for investors evaluating the issue.

The company's DRHP identifies its business around molecular diagnostics and the Truenat platform, highlighting its focus on point-of-care testing.

What Investors Should Watch Through the Day

Monday's market direction is likely to depend on a combination of domestic and global factors.

1. US-Iran Developments

Any breakthrough concerning the Strait of Hormuz could immediately influence crude oil prices and global risk sentiment.

2. Crude Oil Prices

A sharp move higher in crude could weigh on Indian equities through inflation, the current account and rupee-related concerns.

3. Q1 Earnings

With a large number of companies announcing results, stock-specific volatility is likely to remain elevated.

4. Institutional Flows

Continued DII buying could provide downside support, particularly if foreign investors remain cautious.

5. IPO Subscription Data

Subscription trends in Dhoot Transmission, Molbio Diagnostics and the other ongoing issues will provide an important indication of risk appetite in the primary market.

Market Outlook: Volatility Likely to Remain Elevated

The morning session reflects a market caught between strong domestic liquidity and external geopolitical uncertainty.

The Nifty's ability to sustain levels above 24,500 will remain important for near-term sentiment. A sustained recovery above the opening-zone highs could improve momentum, while a decisive break below the 24,500 area could increase selling pressure and bring the recent volatility back into focus.

The mixed performance of broader markets also suggests that investors are currently favouring selective stocks rather than indiscriminately buying across the market.

For the rest of the session, geopolitical headlines, crude oil movements, Q1 earnings announcements and institutional activity are likely to remain the principal drivers.

With the IPO calendar also packed and several major companies scheduled to report quarterly numbers, Monday could remain a stock-specific and headline-driven session for Dalal Street.
