US-Iran Peace Deal Uncertainty, Mixed Sectoral Trends and Q1 Earnings Keep Investors on Edge; IPO Activity Adds to Market Buzz

Indian equity markets traded in the red during Friday's morning session as investors remained cautious amid conflicting developments surrounding the proposed US-Iran peace agreement and stable crude oil prices. Weakness in heavyweight financial stocks weighed on benchmark indices, while buying in information technology shares and selective mid-cap stocks prevented a sharper decline.

At 10:00 AM, the BSE Sensex was trading 233.94 points lower (0.30%) at 78,720.82, while the Nifty 50 slipped 9.55 points (0.04%) to 24,626.45. The market witnessed stock-specific action driven by quarterly earnings, brokerage upgrades, and fresh activity in the primary market.

Financial Stocks Weigh on Benchmark Indices

The financial sector emerged as the biggest drag on the market during the morning trade. Shares of Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, and Shriram Finance witnessed heavy selling pressure, making them the top losers in the Nifty 50 index.

The weakness in financial services also impacted sectoral indices, with the Nifty Financial Services and Nifty PSU Bank indices underperforming the broader market. Investors appeared cautious ahead of further earnings announcements and amid profit booking in recently outperforming financial stocks.

IT Stocks Lead the Rally

While financials remained under pressure, the technology sector provided strong support to the market. The Nifty IT Index gained around 1.3%, emerging as the best-performing sector during the session.

Leading the gains were Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Mphasis, and Persistent Systems, which attracted buying interest as investors continued to favour export-oriented technology companies amid expectations of stable global demand and attractive valuations.

Market experts believe that IT stocks are witnessing renewed investor interest after correcting significantly over the past few months, making the sector relatively attractive compared to other segments.

Broader Markets Continue to Show Resilience

Despite weakness in benchmark indices, the broader market displayed resilience. The Nifty Midcap 100 Index traded around 0.24-0.31% higher, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 Index remained marginally positive during most of the session.

The positive performance of broader markets indicates that investors continue to focus on company-specific opportunities despite near-term macroeconomic uncertainties.

Among sectoral indices, Auto, Realty, and IT stocks traded in positive territory, while PSU Banks, Financial Services, and select private banking stocks remained under pressure.

Britannia Surges After Strong Quarterly Performance

One of the standout performers of the day was Britannia Industries, whose shares jumped nearly 5% after reporting a robust set of June quarter earnings.

The FMCG major posted a 14% year-on-year increase in net profit for the first quarter of FY27. Following the results, global brokerage Nomura reiterated its 'Buy' recommendation and maintained a target price of ₹6,500, indicating a potential upside of more than 20% from previous closing levels.

The positive earnings and favourable brokerage commentary boosted investor confidence in the stock.

Kirloskar Oil Engines Falls Despite Healthy Operations

Shares of Kirloskar Oil Engines declined over 11% after the company reported a 20% year-on-year decline in net profit to ₹114 crore during the April-June quarter.

Although operational performance remained stable, investors reacted negatively to the decline in profitability, resulting in sharp selling during early trade.

Varroc Engineering Rallies on Revenue Growth

In contrast, Varroc Engineering gained more than 10%, despite reporting a 26.5% decline in quarterly net profit.

Investors cheered the company's impressive 30% year-on-year increase in consolidated revenue, which rose to ₹2,634 crore during the quarter. The strong revenue growth highlighted improving demand across its business segments and outweighed concerns over lower profitability.

IPO Market Remains Active

The primary market continued to witness healthy activity as multiple public issues opened for subscription.

LEAP India, Technocraft Ventures, and Optimystix Entertainment launched their IPOs on Friday, attracting attention from both retail and institutional investors.

Meanwhile, LAPL Automotive IPO entered its second day of subscription, while Ardee Industries IPO and Aegeus Technologies IPO moved into their final day of bidding.

The steady flow of IPOs reflects continued confidence among companies in tapping India's capital markets despite short-term volatility.

Market Outlook

Indian equities are likely to remain influenced by global geopolitical developments, crude oil price movements, corporate earnings, and foreign institutional investor activity over the coming sessions.

While uncertainty surrounding the US-Iran peace negotiations has kept investors cautious, the resilience in broader markets and strength in the IT sector suggest that buying interest remains intact in quality stocks. With several heavyweight companies scheduled to report earnings throughout the day, volatility is expected to remain elevated, making stock-specific action the dominant theme for investors.
