Broader Markets Outperform, Auto and Financial Shares Lead Gains While Investors Track Heavy Q1 Earnings Calendar
Indian equity benchmarks traded in a narrow range on Friday, with gains in financial and automobile stocks helping offset weakness in information technology shares. Investors remained focused on the ongoing June-quarter earnings season, which drove sharp stock-specific movements across sectors.
At around 11:00 AM, the BSE Sensex was up 64.57 points (0.08%) at 77,992.72, while the Nifty 50 advanced 37.20 points (0.15%) to 24,354.35. Despite the modest gains in benchmark indices, the broader market displayed stronger momentum, reflecting healthy investor participation in mid- and small-cap stocks.
Financial Stocks Provide Stability to the Market
The financial sector emerged as the biggest support for the market during the morning session. Strong buying interest in lending and financial services companies helped keep benchmark indices in positive territory despite weakness in technology stocks.
Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, and Mahindra & Mahindra featured among the top gainers on the Nifty 50, supported by optimism around earnings and continued investor confidence in domestic growth-oriented sectors.
Market participants noted that financial stocks continue to attract institutional buying amid expectations of healthy credit growth and stable asset quality.
IT Sector Under Pressure Amid Profit Booking
The Nifty IT index was the day's worst-performing sector as investors continued to book profits in large-cap technology companies.
Heavyweights including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, and Persistent Systems traded lower, weighing on the overall technology index.
Apart from IT, the FMCG and Media indices also remained under pressure, suggesting a cautious approach by investors towards defensive sectors.
Broader Markets Continue Their Outperformance
Unlike the benchmark indices, broader markets remained firmly in positive territory, indicating sustained investor appetite for mid-sized and smaller companies.
-
Nifty Midcap 100: Up 0.32%
-
Nifty Smallcap 100: Up 0.47%
Among thematic indices, Nifty India Defence and Nifty Capital Markets outperformed the broader market, extending their recent rally as investors continued to favour sectors benefiting from government spending and rising capital market activity.
The resilience in the broader market highlights that market sentiment remains constructive despite mixed performances among large-cap stocks.
Thermax Shares Sink 16% After Sharp Profit Decline
One of the biggest market movers of the day was Thermax Ltd., whose shares plunged nearly 16% after the company reported a steep decline in first-quarter earnings.
The engineering company posted an 83.4% year-on-year fall in net profit, significantly below market expectations. The disappointing numbers triggered heavy selling, making Thermax one of the worst-performing stocks on the NSE during the session.
The sharp correction reflects investor concerns over profitability pressures and weaker-than-expected operational performance.
RailTel Falls After Weak Quarterly Numbers
Shares of RailTel Corporation of India declined more than 3% after the company reported a marginal 0.5% year-on-year decline in Q1 net profit.
Although revenue remained relatively stable, the muted earnings growth prompted investors to reduce exposure to the stock, pushing it to an intraday low of around ₹283.80.
Niva Bupa Erases Early Rally
Health insurer Niva Bupa Health Insurance witnessed sharp volatility after announcing its quarterly results.
The stock initially jumped over 6% after reporting a 93% increase in net profit to ₹138 crore during the April-June quarter. However, profit booking erased the gains later in the session, with the stock slipping into negative territory.
The movement indicates that strong earnings alone may not be sufficient to sustain rallies when valuations are already elevated.
GNG Electronics Hits Lower Circuit Despite Strong Profit Growth
In another notable development, GNG Electronics hit its 5% lower circuit despite reporting more than 56% growth in first-quarter net profit.
The decline suggests investors may have been disappointed with forward guidance or chose to lock in profits following the company's recent listing gains.
L&T Strengthens Global Order Book
Infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced that its hydrocarbon subsidiary has signed a six-year Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) framework agreement with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO).
The agreement enables L&T to participate in multiple engineering and EPC projects in Oman over the contract period, further strengthening its international project pipeline and reinforcing its presence in the Middle East.
Zepto Delays IPO, Shifts Focus to Pre-IPO Funding
Quick-commerce startup Zepto has deferred its proposed initial public offering and is instead looking to raise approximately ₹1,000 crore through a pre-IPO funding round.
The decision removes immediate concerns about valuation comparisons for listed quick-commerce players, including Swiggy and Eternal (formerly Zomato), while giving Zepto additional time to strengthen its financial position before entering public markets.
