Saudi Arabia’s premium airline aims to tap India’s booming aviation market with daily Boeing 787-9 service and seamless connectivity to Europe and the Middle East

Saudi Arabia’s newest premium carrier, Riyadh Air, has officially announced its entry into the Indian aviation market with the launch of a daily non-stop flight between Mumbai and Riyadh, beginning August 4, 2026. The move marks a significant milestone in the airline’s ambitious global expansion strategy and underscores the growing importance of India as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

Backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Riyadh Air is positioning itself as a premium global airline offering world-class passenger experience, advanced digital services, and extensive international connectivity. Bookings for the new Mumbai route opened on July 6, with the airline expecting strong demand from business travelers, tourists, and the large Indian expatriate community in the Kingdom.

The launch also aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, which aims to transform Riyadh into a major international aviation and tourism hub.

Daily Flights to Connect Mumbai and Riyadh

The new Mumbai–Riyadh route will operate seven days a week, providing passengers with greater flexibility and improved connectivity between the two countries.

The service will be operated using the airline’s modern Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, featuring a premium four-class cabin configuration:

  • Business Elite

  • Business Class

  • Premium Economy

  • Economy Class

The Boeing 787-9 is recognized globally for its fuel efficiency, lower emissions, quieter cabin environment, larger windows, improved air quality, and enhanced passenger comfort, making it one of the most preferred aircraft for long-haul international travel.

India Emerges as a Strategic Growth Market

India has become one of the airline industry's most attractive markets due to rising disposable incomes, expanding international travel, rapid economic growth, and increasing demand for premium air travel.

Commenting on the launch, Tony Douglas, Chief Executive Officer of Riyadh Air, said the airline is delighted to introduce a premium travel option for Indian passengers while strengthening connectivity between Mumbai, Riyadh, Europe, and the Middle East.

He highlighted that India’s strong economic growth and increasing demand for international travel make it a strategic market for Riyadh Air’s long-term expansion plans.

Industry experts believe India will remain one of the airline’s most important markets as outbound travel continues to grow at one of the fastest rates globally.

Enhanced Connectivity to Europe and the Middle East

One of the biggest advantages of the new route is the seamless onward connectivity that passengers will receive through Riyadh.

Travelers from Mumbai will be able to conveniently connect to several international destinations across Europe and the Middle East.

Key Connecting Destinations

Europe

  • London

  • Madrid

  • Additional European cities expected in the future

Middle East & North Africa

  • Jeddah

  • Cairo

  • Other regional destinations

The airline aims to position Riyadh as a major global transit hub capable of competing with established aviation hubs in the Gulf region.

Premium Experience Designed for Modern Travelers

Unlike many traditional carriers, Riyadh Air is positioning itself as a digitally driven premium airline focused on delivering a modern travel experience.

Passengers can expect:

  • Advanced digital booking and travel management

  • Premium onboard dining

  • High-speed connectivity

  • Modern in-flight entertainment systems

  • Spacious cabin interiors

  • Enhanced comfort across all travel classes

The airline has emphasized that customer experience and technology will remain central to its long-term brand strategy.

Backed by Saudi Arabia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund

Riyadh Air was launched in March 2023 and is wholly owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

The airline forms a key pillar of Saudi Vision 2030, the Kingdom’s long-term economic diversification programme aimed at reducing dependence on oil by expanding sectors such as tourism, aviation, logistics, entertainment, and technology.

The Saudi government is investing billions of dollars in airport infrastructure, airline expansion, and tourism projects to establish Riyadh as one of the world’s leading aviation hubs.

Global Network Expanding Rapidly

With the launch of Mumbai services, Riyadh Air’s international network now includes nine destinations, with several additional routes expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

The airline has set an ambitious target of serving more than 100 destinations worldwide by 2030.

Its planned network expansion spans:

  • Asia

  • Europe

  • North America

  • Africa

  • The Middle East

India is expected to play a central role in achieving these expansion targets due to its massive passenger base and growing international travel demand.

India–Saudi Arabia Air Travel Continues to Grow

Passenger traffic between India and Saudi Arabia has witnessed strong growth in recent years, supported by expanding trade, investment, tourism, and cultural ties.

Several factors continue to drive demand:

  • Large Indian expatriate workforce in Saudi Arabia

  • Growing bilateral business relationships

  • Rising tourism under Saudi Vision 2030

  • Religious travel for Hajj and Umrah

  • Increasing corporate travel

The introduction of another premium airline is expected to further strengthen connectivity while increasing competition on the India–Saudi Arabia route.

Benefits for Business and Leisure Travelers

The new service is expected to cater to a broad range of passengers.

Business Travelers

The direct daily flight offers faster access to Saudi Arabia’s rapidly growing financial and commercial sectors, while also providing convenient onward connections to Europe.

Leisure Travelers

Indian tourists will benefit from improved access to Saudi Arabia’s emerging tourism destinations as well as European holiday destinations through a single-stop journey.

Indian Expatriates

The large Indian community living and working in Saudi Arabia will gain another daily travel option featuring premium onboard services and flexible schedules.

Boost for Bilateral Trade and Tourism

Beyond passenger convenience, the new route is expected to strengthen economic cooperation between India and Saudi Arabia.

Improved air connectivity can facilitate:

  • Higher business travel

  • Increased tourism

  • Faster commercial exchanges

  • Greater investment flows

  • Enhanced people-to-people connectivity

As both countries continue to deepen strategic and economic relations, aviation is becoming an increasingly important pillar of bilateral cooperation.

Competitive Landscape Set to Intensify

The entry of Riyadh Air is expected to intensify competition among airlines operating on India–Middle East routes.

Established Gulf carriers have long dominated transit traffic between India and Europe. Riyadh Air’s premium product, modern fleet, and ambitious expansion plans could enable it to capture a meaningful share of this fast-growing market.

Increased competition may also benefit travelers through improved services, enhanced connectivity, and more competitive fares over the long term.

Outlook

Riyadh Air’s entry into India represents more than just the launch of a new international route—it reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader ambition to become a leading global aviation hub under Vision 2030. With daily Mumbai–Riyadh flights, a modern Boeing 787-9 fleet, premium cabin offerings, and extensive onward connectivity, the airline is well positioned to tap into India’s rapidly expanding international travel market.

As the carrier continues its aggressive global expansion toward serving over 100 destinations by the end of the decade, India is expected to remain a key growth market. The new service is likely to strengthen bilateral ties, boost tourism and business travel, and provide Indian passengers with another premium gateway to Saudi Arabia, Europe, and beyond.
