Bhupender Yadav Says Scientific Planning Underway to Restore Tiger Habitats and Strengthen India's Biodiversity
The Centre has begun exploring the possibility of reintroducing tigers into suitable landscapes in West Bengal as part of a broader effort to strengthen wildlife conservation and restore ecological balance. Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav announced the initiative on Tuesday, highlighting the government's commitment to expanding India's successful tiger conservation model to new regions through scientific planning and expert consultation.
The proposal comes as India continues to reinforce its position as a global leader in wildlife conservation, with the Royal Bengal Tiger remaining one of the country's most iconic and protected species.
Learning from Sariska's Success
Speaking about the proposed initiative, Yadav pointed to the remarkable transformation of Rajasthan's Sariska Tiger Reserve, where tiger numbers have grown from zero in 2008 to 56 following one of India's most successful wildlife translocation programmes.
The Sariska project demonstrated that carefully planned relocation efforts, supported by habitat restoration, anti-poaching measures and continuous monitoring, can successfully revive tiger populations in landscapes where they had disappeared.
Encouraged by this success, authorities are now evaluating whether similar conservation strategies can be implemented in selected areas of West Bengal.
Scientific Assessment Before Reintroduction
The minister stressed that any decision to relocate tigers would be based on extensive scientific studies rather than administrative considerations.
Wildlife experts are expected to evaluate several factors before identifying suitable landscapes, including habitat quality, prey availability, forest connectivity, ecological sustainability and the ability of local ecosystems to support a healthy tiger population.
Officials are also expected to work closely with conservation scientists, forest departments and local stakeholders to ensure that any future reintroduction programme is both environmentally sustainable and socially responsible.
