ITR Filing Deadline Enters Final Phase, Passport Fees Rise, RBI Tightens Consumer Protection and Banks Revise Credit Card Benefits
A series of important financial and regulatory changes have come into effect across India from July 1, 2026, impacting millions of taxpayers, bank customers, passport applicants and credit card users. The latest updates include revised passport fees, stricter banking regulations against financial product mis-selling, changes to airport lounge access and reward programmes, free Aadhaar email updates, and the final phase of the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing season.
The changes are aimed at strengthening consumer protection, improving digital governance and enhancing compliance across the financial system, although some revisions will also increase costs for individuals and businesses.
Income Tax Return Filing Enters Crucial Final Month
July marks the final month for salaried individuals and eligible taxpayers to file their Income Tax Returns (ITR) for Financial Year 2025-26 (Assessment Year 2026-27).
The due date for filing ITR-1 and ITR-2 remains July 31, 2026.
Tax experts advise taxpayers not to delay filing until the final week, as last-minute technical issues, document mismatches or errors could lead to unnecessary complications.
Missing the statutory deadline may result in late filing fees, interest on unpaid tax liabilities, delayed refunds and restrictions on carrying forward certain capital or business losses.
Before filing returns, taxpayers should verify Form 16, Annual Information Statement (AIS), Tax Information Summary (TIS), bank statements, capital gains reports, interest certificates and other income records to ensure accurate reporting.
Aadhaar Email Update Available Free of Cost
In a move to encourage digital identity updates, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has temporarily waived the fee for updating the registered email address linked to Aadhaar.
Between July 1 and December 31, 2026, individuals can update their Aadhaar-linked email address free of charge through the official Aadhaar mobile application.
Normally, the service attracts a fee of ₹75.
Keeping Aadhaar records updated is becoming increasingly important as Aadhaar authentication is widely used for banking services, income tax verification, government benefits, digital KYC and financial transactions.
Passport Applications Become More Expensive
International travel documentation has become costlier following the revision of passport application fees by the Ministry of External Affairs.
The revised fee structure is as follows:
-
36-page Normal Passport: ₹2,500 (Earlier ₹1,500)
-
60-page Normal Passport: ₹3,500 (Earlier ₹2,000)
-
36-page Tatkaal Passport: ₹5,000
-
60-page Tatkaal Passport: ₹6,000
The revised charges apply to both fresh applications and passport renewals.
The increase is expected to affect students pursuing overseas education, professionals relocating abroad, business travellers and individuals planning international vacations.
RBI Introduces Tougher Rules Against Mis-selling
One of the most significant regulatory developments comes from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which has implemented a stricter framework to curb the mis-selling of financial products by banks and regulated entities.
Under the new rules, banks will be required to ensure customers clearly understand the products being offered before obtaining consent.
Institutions found guilty of mis-selling products such as insurance policies, investment plans or financial services may be required to compensate customers and refund financial losses.
The RBI has also tightened guidelines governing telemarketing practices, restricting unsolicited promotional calls and requiring stronger customer consent mechanisms.
The framework is expected to improve transparency, strengthen consumer confidence and encourage more responsible sales practices across the banking industry.
HDFC Bank Revises Airport Lounge Eligibility
Several HDFC Bank credit card customers will experience changes in complimentary airport lounge access benefits.
Beginning July 1, eligible cardholders must spend ₹60,000 in the previous calendar quarter to receive three complimentary domestic airport lounge visits during the following quarter.
For example, expenditure incurred between April and June determines lounge eligibility for the July to September period.
Customers failing to meet the minimum spending threshold will no longer qualify for complimentary lounge access under the revised programme.
The move reflects an industry-wide trend of linking premium lifestyle benefits to customer spending behaviour.
SBI Card Modifies Reward Point Programme
SBI Card has also revised the reward structure for selected co-branded credit cards, including the PhonePe SBI Credit Card PURPLE and PhonePe SBI Credit Card SELECT BLACK.
The revised programme introduces monthly caps on reward point accumulation while expanding the categories of transactions that are excluded from earning reward points.
Frequent users of these cards may see lower reward accruals and may need to reassess whether their existing card continues to deliver optimum value.
Industry observers expect similar revisions across other credit card issuers as banks seek to optimise loyalty programme costs.
Consumers Advised to Review Financial Planning
With multiple financial changes taking effect simultaneously, experts recommend that individuals review their personal finances and documentation during July.
Consumers should:
-
File Income Tax Returns well before July 31
-
Update Aadhaar email details during the free period
-
Budget for revised passport charges
-
Evaluate credit card spending patterns to retain premium benefits
-
Understand changes to reward programmes
-
Familiarise themselves with the RBI's enhanced consumer protection framework
Taking timely action can help avoid unnecessary penalties, maintain uninterrupted financial services and maximise available benefits.
Broader Impact on India's Financial Ecosystem
The July 1 changes reflect the government's continued focus on strengthening digital governance, improving tax compliance, enhancing consumer protection and modernising financial services.
While revised fees and eligibility conditions may increase costs for some consumers, measures such as free Aadhaar updates and stronger safeguards against financial mis-selling are expected to improve overall customer experience.
For businesses, financial institutions and individual consumers alike, staying informed about regulatory developments has become increasingly important in an evolving financial environment.
As India's banking and financial services ecosystem becomes more digital and customer-centric, proactive financial planning and timely compliance will remain essential for managing costs, reducing risks and making informed financial decisions.
