Healthcare Rally Supports Benchmarks While IT, Midcap and Smallcap Stocks Remain Weak

Indian equity benchmarks traded with a positive bias during Monday's morning session, supported by strong buying in pharmaceutical and healthcare stocks. While the benchmark indices remained resilient, weakness in IT shares and broader market indices reflected a cautious undertone among investors ahead of key domestic and global triggers.

At around 10:00 AM, the Nifty 50 was trading at 24,073.60, gaining 24.60 points (0.10%), while the BSE Sensex hovered near 77,083.75, largely unchanged from its previous close. During intraday trade, the Nifty briefly crossed the 24,100 mark, indicating continued buying interest in large-cap stocks.

Pharma Sector Emerges as the Market Leader

The pharmaceutical sector emerged as the strongest performer of the session, with investors accumulating healthcare stocks amid defensive buying.

The Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare indices outperformed all other sectoral indices, led by strong gains in:

  • Dr. Reddy's Laboratories

  • Sun Pharmaceutical Industries

  • Ajanta Pharma

  • IPCA Laboratories

Within the Nifty 50 basket, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Shriram Finance, and Eternal ranked among the top gainers, reflecting selective buying in quality large-cap stocks.

Market participants believe that pharmaceutical companies continue to attract investors due to their relatively stable earnings outlook, export opportunities, and defensive nature during periods of market uncertainty.

IT Stocks Face Profit Booking

Technology stocks witnessed selling pressure during the session, making the Nifty IT index the weakest-performing sector of the day.

The decline comes as investors remained cautious over global technology demand and continued to book profits following the sector's recent rally. Weak global technology cues also weighed on investor sentiment.

The Auto sector also traded lower, indicating mixed participation across cyclical sectors.

Broader Markets Underperform Benchmarks

Despite gains in frontline indices, broader markets remained under pressure.

The Nifty Midcap 100 slipped around 0.23%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined nearly 0.66%, suggesting investors preferred relatively safer large-cap stocks over high-beta mid- and small-cap counters.

Analysts believe broader markets could continue to witness stock-specific movements after the strong rally seen in recent months.

MCX Continues Strong Uptrend

Shares of Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) rallied more than 3% during the session to touch an intraday high of ₹2,764.

The stock has now gained nearly 9% over the past four trading sessions, taking the company's market capitalisation beyond ₹70,000 crore. Investors remain optimistic about rising trading volumes and the exchange's long-term growth prospects.

Corporate Developments Remain in Focus

Corporate announcements also kept investors engaged throughout the session.

Alkem Laboratories informed exchanges that its subsidiary Alkem Medtech has completed the first supplementary agreement for acquiring 51% to 55% equity in Occlutech Holding, strengthening its presence in the medical technology business.

Meanwhile, Puravankara signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) for a 6.4-acre land parcel in Bengaluru with an estimated Gross Development Value (GDV) of ₹1,000 crore, further expanding its residential project pipeline.

Adding to positive market sentiment, reports indicated that India has regained the fifth position globally in terms of stock market capitalisation, overtaking Taiwan and South Korea after recent corrections in those markets.
